Gone, but not forgotten: ‘The Conners’ producers on why show’s final season seeks justice for Roseanne

'The Conners' stars Emma Kenney as Harris Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Jay R. Ferguson as Ben, and John Goodman as Dan Conner

    Disney/Justin Stephens

When ABC canceled a reboot of its 1988-97 Emmy-winning comedy Roseanne in May 2017, after its titular star posted a “repugnant” and racist tweet, it seemed like the Conners of (fictional) Lanford, Ill., might be relegated to the TV land graveyard.

Then, just a month later, the network ordered a spin-off series that would bring the family at the center of one of the all-time great working-class sitcoms back to primetime, but without one key player: Roseanne, the character and the actress whose stand-up comedy about her own domestic life had been the basis of the series that was a top 10 ratings hit for its first seven seasons.

The Conners, including paterfamilias Dan (John Goodman), Roseanne’s sister Jackie (Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf), and Conner daughters Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and Becky (Lecy Goranson), were still living in Lanford, still squabbling and supporting each other, still struggling with a lot of the same things real Americans were struggling with … including the loss of an opioid-addicted family member as the Conners’ new reality, and the series’ October 2018 debut episode began with news of Roseanne’s accidental death.

In the six seasons that have followed, the Conners have managed to move forward without Roseanne, with new homes, jobs, money problems, and marriages (even Dan, who married a musician played by Sons of Anarchy and Married … With Children star Katey Sagal. Roseanne Conner, however, while never forgotten, hasn’t exactly been front and center in the storylines.

Until now, as The Conners kicks off its seventh, and final season. Is this for reals this time the end of the line for this great American TV family? Gold Derby talked to Bruce HelfordThe Conners showrunner, and executive producer Dave Caplan, two Roseanne alums who, along with EP Bruce Rasmussen, developed The Connors about how they began the task of ending a TV universe that has been in our living rooms for 37 years off and on in just six episodes, and why it was time to address the subject of Roseanne’s death more directly.

Gold Derby: How did you even begin thinking about what you wanted to do to wrap up these six episodes, this world?

Dave Caplan: Well, I think we wanted to answer big questions, and small questions about our characters, and where they’ve been headed since the original show, and where they’ve been headed on The Conners. And they’ve all had interesting questions about where they were going to end up in their lives. We’ve been with them during a bunch of ups and downs and struggles.

And being faced with the question of where we’re going to finish them? We started at the end, and said, “What is an honest, earned finish line for each of these characters?” And then we worked back over the six to make sure that we got there with them. So, I think the audience is going to be really satisfied with where we end up. It’s real, and it’s interesting, and it’s satisfying.

Bruce Helford: Yeah. That was the main thing was to be sure that it was a satisfying ending, and one that left a legacy that we had started to try and find with the Roseanne reboot, and then had to start to try to find with The Conners. It will be true to the show, which I think the audience will find very satisfying.

Did you feel rushed? Did it seem almost impossible to do all you wanted to do in six episodes?

Helford: I think it would have felt rushed had it been at the end of 22 [episodes]. The one thing we didn’t want do is we didn’t want this to be just one of those things where you just tune in for the last episode, and say goodbye. So, we made this a six-episode event. These stories are linked like a miniseries. And I believe the last two are going to air together, as an hour, We’ve always had these long arcs for the characters each season, and we know where they’re striving to get to, and what they, ultimately, need, ultimately, want.

And so, that wasn’t so difficult. And it never felt rushed. It just felt like it didn’t have to end. It could have gone on forever. We felt like the show is still full of life, and everything else, but everything has to end sometime.

So, we made the decisions on where we were going to go to make sure that would be big enough to hold that legacy.

I think some viewers will be surprised to hear Roseanne’s character’s name pop up in such a big way when Jackie brings to the family the news that they can sue the pharmaceutical company that made the drugs that Roseanne overdosed on.

Everyone’s onboard except Dan, which is not a surprise, given how great his loss was, the circumstance under which he lost his wife, how much frief and guilt he has about her health and how much he struggled. He’s also found some peace and happiness with Louise (Sagal). he’s the one who’s tried to put his life back together most of all since her death. But, of course he still feels responsibility to his family and their financial futures. They have all stuck together as a family, especially since Roseanne’s death. Can he figure out a way to make everyone happy?

Bruce Helford: Like we say, it will be satisfying. That’s the only thing we can really tell you is that it will be a satisfying ending. There are so many things that it brings up. It brings up guilt, it brings up, “Does the little guy ever win fighting City Hall?” You know what I mean? That’s the other thing that’s in the mix for Dan, and how much torture do you want to go through to maybe come up with nothing?

Again, six episodes to discuss all this is, for a sitcom, for sure, a long arc to deal with one storyline. So, I think we pretty richly go through it, and examine it from all angles, from all angles with Jackie espousing one, Dan espousing another, and the family all jumps in, ultimately, too about how they feel about this. But we felt very, very good about the last episode, and about where everything came to.

Gold Derby: Do you of think Jackie is being fair to Dan? She’s pretty rough on him in suggesting that he was backing down from a fight, something that he had never done before, and suggesting that her sister is just being forgotten. Those were pretty tough accusations to throw at Dan, who obviously was crushed by losing Roseanne, and who, as he often jokes about, but is true, isn’t in the best of health himself.

Dave Caplan: I think Jackie, like a lot of the family, still struggles with the death of Roseanne Conner, and I think in everybody’s mind they’re trying to figure out what a fitting legacy would be. So for her, it’s not simply about getting some money.

    Bruce Helford: It’s about justice.

Dave Caplan: Yeah. It’s about justice and it’s about legacy for Roseanne. So, I think she’s got her own emotional agenda to see to, as does Dan, and they’re in conflict, which is what makes it interesting. They’re both honest, and they’re both legitimate emotions.

Bruce Helford: And I think she was surprised. I think Jackie was surprised to hear him not be onboard. The Supreme Court literally handed us a storyline when they pulled the immunity from the opioid companies. And wouldn’t a working class family want to take advantage of the fact that these people … no one knew the dangers. No one knew how addictive the drugs were. No one knew any of that. And [Roseanne] fell right into that trap. So, for her, it’s just this is no question at all. So, it raises really a lot of interesting material.

Dave Caplan: I also think the character’s death could feel senseless, and I think Jackie’s trying to make sure that something important comes from it, that something comes from it.

Dan has a lot of other things pulling at him too. He knows how badly his grandson Mark wants to be able to pay for a top-notch education, and he still feels guilty about, back in the Roseanne days when he couldn’t help Becky pay for college so she ran away and got married. He also has Louise telling him it’s OK for him to make a decision that will leave him most at peace, that he’s given plenty to his family.

We also know about that risky hacking job Mark is doing. Jackie knows about it too. If she tells Dan about it, it might push him even further to go for a settlement to help Mark pay for college, or at least to have a stash of money socked away should Mark need a really good attorney at some point …

Helford: All those things will come up. It really does deal with all of these things. And we come to some really interesting things with him and Louise, there’s things that come up with Mark. Will Becky ever find true happiness? There were so many things to look at and to find and to find ways to weave them, many of them altogether.

Caplan: We’ve tried to be honest with things that our characters live with long-term, because it’s one of the false notes sometimes of TV comedy that the end of the episode is the end of an emotional turmoil. And I think we all know it doesn’t really work like that, that things stick with you for a very long time, and you’re not dealing with them the next week, and the next day, but it’s the next year and the next decade.

And we’ve tried to be honest about that with all the characters. So, everything that they’ve been through in their long journey is still with them, and still plays a part in the stories that we tell.

Because you both have worked with these actors and these characters since the original Roseanne series, you have such a deep well of knowledge of them, in even greater and specific detail than we maybe even saw on screen.

    Caplan: It’s a gift.

Helford: And we realize what an incredible gift was given to us to be able to continue with the depth of these stories and the characters. … There are things that in these six episodes go back to the very beginnings of the Roseanne show.

    'Roseanne' cast

What inspired the storyline with the potential lawsuit with the pharmaceutical company now? If you had gone on for a full season this year,  and maybe another season, would you have done it eventually, or did you just feel now was the tim?

Helford: Well, as soon as I read that story about the Supreme Court decision, it was, we would have done that whether it was a full season, or not. It was just too natural a story. This is a working-class family with no bucks. They’re not going to pass up this opportunity. So, yeah. The timing was just very fortunate for us. Crazy that that happens sometimes, but it did.

We know there are some characters that we won’t necessarily see in these six episodes … no D.J., no David. Are we going to get updates on them? Any of the other recurring characters who might not be onscreen these final episodes?

Helford: There’s an update on D.J. There’s an update on … you know, Estelle [Parsons, who plays Jackie and Roseanne’s mom, Beverly] … Estelle, we love, but she’s 97 years old. She lives in New York, so it was too much to ask for her to fly out (to Los Angeles). And also, the season before, we just had such great stuff with her. She did a fantastic job. She’s an amazing person besides. But, yes. There are pretty much updates on everybody. I’m trying to think if there’s an update on David. I think there is. There’s a comment about David.

In the season premiere we have four happy couples. But work and timing looks like they could become issues for Darlene and Ben (Jay R. Ferguson). Then there’s talk of Darlene making a new friend at the Lobo, played by a similarly lonely guy played by guest star Seth Green. What can you say about that and what can you say about happy endings for everyone?

Helford: It definitely won’t be happy endings for everyone. Oh, boy. Have we mentioned who the guest star is? Have we already revealed that?

Caplan: Yeah. It’s been out already. led. There are going to be some more guest stars coming up on the show.

Helford: What’s fun about Seth is that he and Sara have been friends forever. And they are both the same sides of a coin. They’re very similar people. They’re both sarcastic. They’re snarky. He’s so quick and has such an out of the box, improv vibe to him that it was just really fun, and seeing them together is really fun, and how they affect the relationship. … There is an effect, but we won’t go into what it is.

The guest star we do meet in the premiere is Zoe Perry, who we all know is the real-life daughter of Laurie Metcalf. Amazing chemistry. I know she had played young Jackie early on in Roseanne, but having seen her play the younger adult version of Laurie’s character from The Big Bang Theory in Young Sheldon, and now seeing her in this, it was just such a great scene, and so funny that they were so adversarial. At the end of that scene when Jackie threatens her that she’s going to go become a cop again, and become her partner, I was just sitting there thinking, ‘I want to see that spinoff.’

Helford: We do, too. They got such a kick out of each other. We were so happy Zoe was available.

Does she return in the season?

    Helford: We’ll see her again.

Does that mean Jackie is going to maybe actually pursue joining the Lanford PD again?

Helford and Caplan: [Laughing] You’ll just have to see.

This universe has been one of the greatest working-class sitcoms ever. And through nearly 40 years, it has touched on so many cultural issues, shifts, a lot of controversies, some serious, some silly. What do you want viewers to say about the show at the end of this season? And if we never see the Conner family in new adventures again, what do you think, ultimately, the legacy of the show is?

Caplan: For me, I think I would love that people thought about it as the most honest view of working-class America,, and how the economic struggles impact all parts of their lives, and how only the strongest of families can get through it.

Helford: “We all grew up pretty humble. And I’ve always seen the working class as the actual nobility of this country, the ones who make the greatest sacrifice. And so, if we’ve captured that correctly, and also provided honesty and not gone the silly route. … We’ve been very careful on all that, pretty much. … The whole reason for redoing Roseanne, the reboot, was because we felt the lottery [Season 9 storyline of the original series] wasn’t a good legacy. And so, we wanted to go back and fix that. And then that blew up, and we had to fix that again with The Conners.

The show, it transcends just the traditional sitcom genre in a way, and in a way that All in the Family did, and all those shows. We want to leave a legacy that has some gravitas to it. The work the actors did is phenomenal. They’re all amazing people. And they’ve touched people’s lives and were a part of people’s family, coming into their homes.

Tim Allen is returning to familiar territory with his latest project, Shifting Gears. A pilot episode for the sitcom was ordered a while back and the project will be moving ahead with a full series order at ABC.

The new series will premiere as part of ABC’s mid-season schedule. As we look forward to Allen’s much-anticipated return to the sitcom world, a first-look image has been released via TV Line, spotlighting Allen in his role as Matt posing with his daughter, Riley played by 2 Broke Girls star and Marvel alum, Kat Dennings.

Reminiscent of Allen’s previously successful sitcoms, Shifting Gears will yet again see The Last Man Standing star as a family patriarch, this time, a troubled one whose coping mechanism after losing his wife is to pour himself into his car repair business. However, his life is about to get exciting again with the arrival of his estranged daughter Riley who moves in with him, bringing along her teenage kids.

The sitcom will follow their family dynamic as Matt tries to make up for lost time but also has to deal with the presence of teenagers whom we can imagine will be a handful for their stubborn grandpa. The singular image teases a fun dynamic between the father-daughter duo. Both are seen standing by the kitchen island striking a similar pose and looking lovingly at each other with a little smile on their faces.

Who Else Stars In ‘Shifting Gears’?

Tim Allen and Kat Dennings in Shifting Gears

Matt’s family will also consist of a son named Nick, portrayed by Froy Gutierrez. Nick is also committed to his father’s well-being as he’s put a pause on his career as a game coder to instead be closer to his dad by helping out at his repair shop.

The repair shop will also benefit from the input of non-family members, including Daryl Mitchell who will star as Stitch, a former marine who also works at the central repair shop, as well as Seann William Scott as Gabriel, a friend of the family. Matt’s grandkids, Carter and Georgia, are played by Maxwell Simkins (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) and newcomer Barrett Margolis, respectively.

Both Allen and Dennings also serve behind the cameras as an executive producer and producer respectively. Shifting Gears reunites Dennings with 2 Broke Girls and Dollface showrunner Michelle Nader, who also serves as showrunner for Shifting GearsMike Scully and Julie Thacker wrote the pilot episode, which was directed by John Pasquin.

Shifting Gears will premiere on ABC on Wednesday 8 January 2025 at 8 P.M. and new episodes will be available the next day on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+. The premiere will be followed by Abbott Elementary‘s crossover episode with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Shifting Gears is finding a smoother lane in its sophomore season when it comes to updating Tim Allen’s signature gruff everyman persona. The premise of Shifting Gears is changing for the better, as centering a classic network sitcom around grief is a tall order.

Allen’s character Matt Parker began the series isolated as a widower, completely estranged from his daughter, never having met his teenage grandkids. Matt’s relationships with all the characters in Shifting Gears has grown, grounding Matt and softening his harshness that made critics respond negatively to Shifting Gears season 1.

Season 2, episode 4 centers on Matt’s relationship with Carter, his 16-year-old grandson, a pairing the show hasn’t yet explored. Carter’s sweet slowness sharply contrasts with Matt’s aggressive energy, but Carter helps Matt have a breakthrough about his own father (Carter’s great-grandfather), which adds a much-needed dimension to Allen’s character.

Matt’s Heart-To-Heart With Grandson Carter Adds More Dimension To Tim Allen’s Character

Matt and Carter Shifting Gears Tim Allen

Tim Allen has leaned on a similar grumpy persona through Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, but Shifting Gears needed to add layers to Matt Parker to make his character work in 2025. Shifting Gears season 2, episode 4 beautifully gives Matt emotional depth by forcing him to confront how his upbringing shaped him negatively.

Matt pressures his Carter to face his fears when dealing with a raccoon, only to lash out when Carter freezes. Their clash — Carter insisting that trying is good enough, but Matt insisting “you either do or you don’t” — reveals a generational divide. Carter feels he’s not “man” enough for his grandfather.

When Carter points out that Matt’s dad’s tough love caused Matt pain, it finally clicks. Matt’s lifelong drive to toughen others up stems from a father who never let him be himself or express his desires. In a rare moment of introspection, Matt apologizes, promising not to repeat those mistakes. It’s a quietly powerful pivot that transforms Allen’s Shifting Gears character from a one-note curmudgeon into a man finally learning compassion — both for others and for himself.

Shifting Gears Needed To Recalibrate The Writing (Though Not Allen’s Performance) For 2025

    Tim Allen Shifting Gears

Shifting Gears season 2 makes a deliberate and necessary course correction, recalibrating both Matt’s character and the show’s overall tone. Tim Allen’s performance hasn’t changed—he’s still the same gruff, old-school, conservative-leaning everyman he’s been playing since 1991 —but the writing around him finally has.

The show now surrounds Matt with relationships that challenge and soften him, like his daughter Riley or his girlfriend Eve. These dynamics turn Shifting Gears from a sitcom about a man refusing to evolve into one about a man trying—however begrudgingly—to catch up with the world around him because he has people he cares about.

Audiences have always loved Tim Allen – Shifting Gears season 1 broke viewership records – but his trademark persona needed a refresh to stay relevant. In one clarifying scene, Matt laments how male idols have shifted from traditional masculinity, like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne embodied, to a more modern, sensitive masculinity in Timothée Chalamet.

It’s a perfect encapsulation of Shifting Gears‘ new tone: gently mocking Allen’s outdated worldview while finally letting his character navigate the turns of modern life without stalling his churlish charm.

Anything with Reba McEntire is sure to be a hit, and her newest NBC show Happy Place is no exception. In fact, the show was renewed for a second season just seven months after the completion of the first one. Below, we share everything you need to know about the cast, plot, release date and more.

What to know about ‘Happy Place’ Season 2

Happy Place follows a woman named Bobbie (McEntire) after she inherits her late father’s tavern—conveniently known as Happy’s Place—only to learn that her half-sister Isabella (Belissa Escobedo) is already there. To make matters worse, Bobbie never knew Isabelle existed—until now.

“Fans can expect a lot of laughing and a lot of heart,” McEntire, who is not only the star but also an executive producer, told First For Women of the show in 2024.  “I fell in love with the show’s concept the first time I heard it, and it stars an eclectic group of people—we just have a blast.”

“When her father dies, Bobbie discovers that she has a half-sister she knew nothing about,” McEntire continued. “The premise is really about how she is learning to deal with that and how she interacts with a cast of colorful characters.”

Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off and is guaranteed to have just as many laughs and family-friendly moments.

“In season 2, Happy’s Place reopens its doors, and a long-buried secret comes to light that will test loyalties and shake things up inside the tavern,” the official logline reads. “Through it all, Bobbie must remind everyone that family isn’t what you’re born into, but it’s the people that stand beside you, even in the workplace.”

Get to know the Season 2 cast

Season 2 of Happy Place is expected to have some A-list celebrity guests, including Christopher Lloyd (of Back to the Future fame), Carol Kane (Taxi and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live and Grown Ups 2). They will be joined by Peterman, Escobedo, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black, Rex Linn and, of course, McEntire.

“There’s something for everybody,” cast member Melissa Peterman told Woman’s World earlier this year. “The show maintains the magic that we had on Reba but also brings in a new cast of characters that are just as lovable. It has heart and humor, and I feel really lucky that I get to go to a job that I love with people I love. How often do you get a second chance to work with your best friend? Reba is so wonderful!”

Is ‘Happy Place’ a spinoff of ‘Reba’?

Despite having a lot of the same cast members, Happy Place is not a spinoff of Reba—a sitcom that ran from 2001 until 2007. Even so, McEntire said the vibes on set and between the cast are just as magical as ever.

“The first time we went into a table read, it was very nostalgic,” the actress told People magazine in May of this year. “It was very emotional. I mean, see, I’m getting choked up right now. That’s the way it was for all of us to be so blessed. If you get one really good sitcom that lasts for six seasons, you think, ‘Man, I’ve got the golden ring. That’ll be it. Probably never do it again, because that’s magic in a bottle.’ We got it again and we realized it.”

‘Happy Place’ Season 2 release date

Happy Place Season 2 debuts on NBC on November 7, and if you need to catch up on Season 1, you can do so on Peacock.

    Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry

The budding romance between pop icon Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to have reached a new chapter — and this time, it’s about their rumored wedding. After days of speculation and a string of insider revelations about their relationship, personalities, and growing closeness, sources are now hinting that the new power couple may be preparing to tie the knot — marking the latest twist in one of the most talked-about celebrity romances of the year, according to the International Business Times, UK edition.

After being photographed sharing a tender embrace off the coast of California, sources close to the pair said their relationship became ‘serious fast’, and Trudeau’s three children are already smitten with their father’s new love interest. Insiders believe the couple’s relationship has taken a serious turn, fueling talk of an engagement, as Perry wins over Trudeau’s family and boldly enters a new chapter in her life.

When rumours initially circulated about Katy Perry, 39, and Justin Trudeau, 53, few believed the unexpected pairing could be real. But after the singer acknowledged their relationship on stage, it became clear that the pop sensation and the politician were a couple, deeply in love. “They were seen cuddling and laughing like teenagers,” an insider told Woman’s Day. “It’s clear they’re besotted with each other. Katy has brought out a playful side of Justin that we haven’t seen in years.” Friends say the two first connected over mutual interests, social activism, charitable work, and parenting, but quickly realised their love was much more profound. “They started off discussing world issues and ended up talking about life, love, and family,” according to a source. “They both value empathy and authenticity, which drew them together.” Winning the Kids Over Perhaps the most captivating part of this new romance is the approval of Trudeau’s children, Xavier, 17, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11, who apparently adore the ‘Firework’ singer. “It’s the first time Justin’s kids have truly felt happy about his dating life,” an insider said.

“They enjoy Katy’s vitality. She’s friendly, witty, and genuinely interested in their lives.” Perry, who has a small daughter with fiancée Orlando Bloom, is known to be good with kids and has made an effort to make Trudeau’s children feel at ease. “She’s gone out of her way to include them,” the insider explained. “Justin loves how easily she fits in with his family.” Justin’s Serious Intentions According to individuals close to the former Prime Minister, Trudeau does not view this as a casual celebrity romance. “He’s a deeply grounded person who values commitment,” a friend said. “He’s made it clear that he’s serious about Katy and wants to build something lasting.” According to sources, Trudeau has hinted at taking the next move. “He’s not playing around,” the source added. “He wants to make Katy Mrs Trudeau. It’s not about glitter or fame; it’s about finding genuine happiness.”

    ‘Katy feels grounded with Justin’

For Perry, this relationship is a refreshing change of pace. After navigating the highs and lows of celebrity and public relationships, she is reported to appreciate the steadiness Trudeau provides. “Katy feels grounded with Justin,” a close friend explained. “He’s calm, intelligent, and really supportive. She’s told friends that she hasn’t felt this satisfied in years.” Those close to the singer say she is ‘glowing’ and more focused on her personal life than ever before. “She loves how genuine he is, there’s no ego, no pretense. They both know who they are and what they want.”

Are wedding bells soon to ring?

As the relationship progresses, rumours about an engagement grow. Friends of the pair say it’s only a matter of time until Trudeau proposes. “Everyone close to them can see it,” stated a source. “The kids adore Katy, and Justin is completely smitten. Nobody would be surprised if he asked her to marry him tomorrow.” For now, the couple is keeping their romance low-key, preferring quiet family moments over the spotlight. But with so much affection and family approval, it seems one of the world’s most unexpected couples could soon be saying I do.

The Voice’s TV Schedule: When The Voice Comes on in October & November 2025

Here’s everything you need to know about The Voice‘s air schedule in October and November.

We’re halfway through The Voice Season 28, and the competition is heating up. The Blind Auditions featured some of the show’s most talented singers yet. And in the Battle rounds, Artists paired themselves up, which was a first in show history. Now, we’re moving on to the Knockouts, where each Coach has a new button on their chairs called the Mic Drop, which they can press for one exceptional Artist on their team. Those four Artists will then compete for America’s vote, and whoever is crowned the Mic Drop winner will get to perform at the 2026 Rose Parade.

All that to say: You won’t want to miss a second of the action. The Voice‘s air schedule is changing slightly over the next few weeks. Below, read everything you need to know about the episodes airing in October and November 2025.

The Voice Season 28 continues with a new episode Monday, October 27 at 8/7c. This episode will see the end of the Battles and the start of the Knockouts. Then, starting Monday, November 3, Voice episodes will begin at 9/8c on NBC and only run for one hour, not two. The Knockout episodes will air every Monday in November at 9/8c, ending on November 24. The Playoffs will air Monday, December 1 and Monday, December 8 at 9/8c on NBC. After that, it’s time for the two-night Live Finale, which will happen December 15 and 16. More details on the Live Finale are coming soon.

At this point, The Voice winner could be on any team. Coaches Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg, and Michael Bublé all have strong Artists competing. The Coaches themselves are hungry for victory, too. It would be Snoop Dogg’s first-ever Voice win, McEntire’s second, and Horan and Bublé’s third.

Even still, the Coaches know it’s all about the Artists at the end of the day.

“This is about the Artists, for the Artists. It’s not about us,” Bublé told NBC Insider about coachingThe Voice. “We love being here. We love being part of the process. There’s a reason why we’ve come and gone, and the people in the red seats change, but the show stays successful. It’s because they’ve made sure that they are so protective of the Artists. And that’s the legacy of the show.”

Why Snoop Dogg Got Emotional & Took Back the Tissue He Lent Reba on The Voice

Everyone was tearing up after this performance on The Voice.

During the first batch of Knockouts on The Voice Season 28, Team Reba Artist Aubrey Nicole chose Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It,” her 2011 country ballad about a devoted husband sticking by his wife as she battles breast cancer. Nicole dedicated the song to her father, who dealt with cancer as she moved away for college but is thankfully now in remission. “The only thing I literally could do was love him through it,” the singer revealed.

During rehearsal, Mega Mentor Joe Walsh praised the young Artist, telling her, “I got goosebumps. My wife is a cancer survivor. It’s a journey.” He also offered her expert guidance on balancing emotion with artistry. “When you are full-on, you can’t let your emotion own you. Trying to blow out all the windows. Because you’re singing hard. Just step back a little in your mind,” he advised her, later marveling, “What a message, and having taken that ride, you took me right there.”

After Nicole performed the song, the Coaches agreed that she’d nailed it. Coach Michael Bublé, after quickly checking in on a fellow Coach who was misty-eyed, said, “I have goosebumps. I find it hard to believe that you are 19 years old. I believed every single word of it. That was just stunning.”

Agreed Coach Niall Horan, “We all have a connection to that song whether we’ve heard it or not. It was believable, from the second you opened your mouth, incredible.”

Reba McEntire and Snoop Dogg were particularly emotional after listening to Aubrey Nicole’s song on The Voice

The reactions of Coaches Snoop Dogg and Reba McEntire prove what a powerful song “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” is, whether you’ve heard it one time or 100 times. For Snoop, it was his very first exposure, as he revealed, “Aubrey, what’s crazy is, I’ve never heard that song before, but I’ve lost so many people in my family from cancer so it was like, you hit me, you hit me in the heart, and that’s what music is supposed to do.”

Snoop also quickly offered McEntire a packet of tissues when he saw her crying as she gave her own feedback on the performance. “I’ll need it, thank you Snoop,” she said, taking the packet and revealing, “Martina’s a good friend of mine. I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer. So that was a real reminder that life goes on. And we sing songs about it so we can remember the ones that are around us that we love so much and that we lean on at times like this. You did a great job with what Joe told you about just singing, just let it come out, and you did that.”

Later, Snoop said, “Reba, I need my tissue back!” and she responded, “I’ll give you half of it.” Host Carson Daly couldn’t help but joke, “I saw the green [wrapper], I thought you gave her something else.” Hey, anything that brings you comfort, right?
