Spoilers below.
Season 2 of 1923 had us on the edge of our seats. The Yellowstone prequel series featured multiple thrilling storylines surrounding the Dutton family, with each arc leading up to a tense finale.
In the last episode, Spencer’s (Brandon Sklenar) homecoming is anything but peaceful. After taking out Jack Dutton, Banner’s men close in on the ranch, but Cara (Helen Mirren), Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), and Zane (Brian Geraghty) manage to hold them off until Spencer arrives. Meanwhile, over at the train station, Jacob (Harrison Ford) and the sheriff kill Banner as his wife and son escape to Portland.
Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) manages to stay warm long enough for Spencer’s train to pass by, and the two share a heartwarming reunion. However, Alex’s frostbite is severe. She manages to have her baby in a neighboring town, but later dies from her injuries.
And as for Teonna (Aminah Nieves), the U.S. marshals arrest her and bring her to court. But when the case is brought in front of a judge—with no witnesses or concrete evidence—it’s immediately thrown out. Teonna walks out a free woman, and decides to head west and start over.
At the very end, Spencer and Jacob head to Whitfield’s house and kill both him and Lydia. We then see an epilogue for Spencer, along with a sweet dream sequence? of him and Alex dancing as the credits roll.
While this chapter of the Duttons’ history seems to be over, there’s still much more to the family saga all the way up to the present day. Following the finale, there’s been no official updates from Taylor Sheridan or Paramount about the future of the show.
But here’s what we know about 1923’s possible third season—and why we might not get it.
Will 1923 be renewed for season 3?
With the success of Taylor Sheridan’s other shows, it would be no surprise if Paramount+ ordered another season of 1923. All signs, however, point to season 2 closing out this chapter in the Dutton saga.
In a Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, Brandon Sklenar described season 2 as the “bookend” of the 1923 story. “It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” he said.

And in an interview with Deadline in 2022, Sheridan said after shooting the first season, he laid out the overall scope of the show to Paramount. “I need to do this in two blocks,” he told the publication. “An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up.”
While that likely concludes the 1923 story, that doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ll see of these Duttons.
Alongside the announcement of the final Yellowstone episodes back in 2023, Paramount also announced a new spin-off titled 1944, Deadline reported. As for which characters the new show could include, that’s still up in the air. At the beginning of 1923, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May)–featured in 1883 and serving as 1923’s narrator–makes it clear that “My father had three children. Only one would live to see their own children grown.” That could mean there’s more death to come in 1923. Could 1944 follow whoever is left standing?
Regardless of how 1923’s season 2 finale ended, there’s more of the Duttons coming, no matter what.
