Key Points

New rule: artists choose their Battle partners; coaches decide who advances.
Snoop, Michael, Reba, and Niall used Steals and Saves strategically this episode.
Key eliminations: Alex Brown, Camille Tredoux, Carly Harvey, Letter to Elise, Lucas Beltran.

The Battles continued on Tuesday night for Season 28 of The Voice with coaches Michael BubléReba McEntireSnoop Dogg, and Niall Horan determining which of their paired teammates will make it through to the Knockouts and which went home.

The twist this season is that the 12 artists on each team decide who they will Battle rather than the coaches pairing them up. But the coaches do make the final decision as to who stays.

That said, each coach has one Steal and one Save this season. On night one, Snoop used his Save on Natalia Albertini, and Michael used his on Trinity. Reba, on the other hand, used her Steal on Austin Gilbert. On night two, Niall used his Steal on Sadie Dahl and Reba used her Save to keep Aubrey Nicole on her team.

This season, celebrity advisors have returned for the Battles. Kelsea Ballerini is assisting Team Bublé, Lewis Capaldi is tutoring Team Niall, Lizzo is guiding Team Snoop, and Nick Jonas is instructing Team Reba.

Battle Round 1: Letter to Elise vs Ryan Mitchell (Carson Callback) from Team Reba

Song: “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds

Winner: Ryan Mitchell

Reba said: “I think the reason that the Battle Rounds really make people get better is because they’re trying to impress the person they’re singing with and vice versa, so the other person will make them rise to the occasion. That’s why I love the Battle Rounds so much. I had to choose Ryan. He’s got a confidence, he’s a quick study, he listens, he’s easy to coach and that’s a coach’s dream.”

Battle Round 2: Sadie Dahl (Four-chair turn) vs Toni Lorene from Team Snoop

Song: “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna

Winner: Toni Lorene

Snoop said: “Toni was just spectacular. What I loved about Toni was her precision at hitting those notes, striking up and letting everyone know it was a Battle. Having that star power that you can’t teach; you just got to have. She’s the whole package. She’s got the look, the feel, the sound.”

Steal: Sadie Dahl

Niall said: “She’s shown that she can sing just about anything. Snoop couldn’t make a bad decision there. Thank goodness he chose Toni because I’ve been waiting for Sadie. She fits right in. Something I don’t have: a big powerful voice like that.”

Battle Round 3: Max Cooper III vs Lucas Beltran from Team Bublé

Song: “It’s a Beautiful Day” by Michael Bublé

Winner: Max Cooper III

Michael said: “One of the reasons I love to be a part of this project is honestly the humanity, the raw emotion that comes with people caring about other people and being passionate toward their dream. Max isn’t bound toward any sort of music.”

Battle Round 4: Camille Tredoux vs Kayleigh Clark (4-chair turn) from Team Niall

Song: “Cowboy’s Cry Too” by Kelsea Ballerini

Winner: Kayleigh Clark

Niall said: “Kayleigh is special. Kayleigh is like a mini-Carrie Underwood. She has so much control over everything she does in low range, in high range. Everything about her is the perfect singer.”

Battle Round 5: Alex Brown vs Liam von Elbe from Team Niall

Song: “Linger” by The Cranberries

Winner: Liam von Elbe

Niall said: “Liam is a great singer/songwriter.  He is very true to who he is. What makes Liam different than everybody else is he’s the only one of his style on my team. I definitely have a soft spot for a singer/songwriter.”

Battle Round 6: Carly Harvey vs Marty O’Reilly from Team Bublé

Song: “At This Moment” by Billy Vera and the Beaters

Winner: Marty O’Reilly

Michael said: “Marty is one of my favorite voices. I think he has one of the most unique, special wonderful sounds. If I turn on the radio, I don’t need one second to know it’s Marty. I honestly think he could be the underdog in this competition.”

Battle Round 7: Aubrey Nicole vs Cori Kennedy from Team Reba

Song: “Somethin’ Bad” feat. Carrie Underwood by Miranda Lambert

Winner: Cori Kennedy

Reba said: “I had to chose Cori because she’s real country, got that grit. She’s feisty and powerful.”

But Aubrey isn’t going anywhere. Reba pressed her Save button to keep Aubrey on her team, but Snoop pressed his Steal button.

Save: Aubrey Nicole

Reba said: “I am so glad that being the only one to turn during the Blind Auditions, she chose [to stay with] me. Aubrey is different. She’s sweet, she’s young, she’s got great range. I am just glad I got to keep them both on my team.”

The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
