Seacrest, 50, revealed that the diagnosis wasn’t new. Gary had been fighting the disease for years, but earlier this year, things took a frightening turn.

During a live taping of American Idol, Ryan received a call from his sister, Meredith, telling him their father had been rushed to the ICU. “She said, ‘Dad is in the ICU, and how fast can you get here?’” Ryan recalled. “I finished the show, but I didn’t even remember what I was saying. It was robotic at that point.”

He flew home to Atlanta immediately, arriving at the hospital in the early morning hours.

What he saw shook him: his strong, intelligent father—whom he’s always looked up to—was in a vulnerable state, battling pneumonia on top of cancer and recovering from chemotherapy that hadn’t gone well. “I’ve never seen that look on his face,” Ryan said. “He was looking at me to help guide what decisions should be made in that moment.”

Though Gary is now out of the hospital, he requires full-time care. Ryan shared that his father’s birthday wish was simple: to sit by the water with his wife of 55 years. “They can’t do much,” Ryan said tearfully, “but they just wanted to be together.”
