Everything We Know About Shifting Gears Season 2

Tim Allen and Kat Dennings fist-bumping in Shifting Gears Season 1

This article contains spoilers for Shifting Gears season 1.

ABC has confirmed that Shifting Gears Season 2 is happening after the sitcom ended with more than one twist on March 19. Shifting Gears follows Matt Parker (Tim Allen), the owner of Parker Customers, a car restoration shop. Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) shows up after 15 years with her two children, Carter (Maxwell Simkins) and Georgia (Barrett Margolis), and things quickly turn chaotic as the family adjusts to being under one roof. Old-school Matt and modern-day Riley spend the first season of Shifting Gears coming to terms with their past relationship so that they can reconcile for the future, even with Matt’s long-term vendetta against Riley’s husband, Jimmy (Lucas Neff), always looming.

Shifting Gears started strong when it premiered this past January, as the Season 1 premiere attracted 6.1 million same-day viewers. Although viewership declined as the season continued, it was the strongest series debut for ABC since 2018. After keeping the cast and fans waiting for an update, ABC announced ahead of the show’s finale in April that Shifting Gears was renewed for Season 2.

Shifting Gears Season 2 Was Officially Announced

Shifting Gears Season 2 Was on the Fence for Several Weeks

There was initial radio silence from ABC after the season finale of Shifting Gears aired in March. When the sitcom’s first season aired, Dennings admitted she had no idea whether there would be a Shifting Gears season 2. Although some television shows are greenlit right off the bat (Matlock season 2 was announced after only two episodes), ABC was most likely waiting to see how the rest of Shifting Gears panned out before making a final decision.

Of course, we’re all on pins and needles about it, but hopefully, we will. You just never know with TV, but we’ve gotten such great numbers, and I’ve heard that people are happy. So who knows?

On April 3, ABC finally announced that there would be a Shifting Gears Season 2. Ultimately, there are several possible reasons why the network decided to give Shifting Gears another shot. Shifting Gears did premiere with high numbers despite the sitcom’s declining viewership over time, and ABC may hope that Shifting Gears Season 2 will generate enough interest. Against other sitcoms, Shifting Gears generally performed well, and since the series ended on several cliffhangers, ABC has a good opportunity to tie up loose ends.

Who Is Returning for Shifting Gears Season 2?

Shifting Gears Has an Ensemble Cast Featuring Familiar Faces

Shifting Gears has a strong list of actors driving the sitcom’s plot, and most of them are all but assured to return for Season 2. Tim Allen, Kat Dennings, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis are the foundations of the Parker family, and none of the four actors is expected to be replaced. Concerning Matt’s employees at Parker Customs, Gabriel (Seann William Scott) and Stitch (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell) have the best chance at returning for Shifting Gears season 2, as Gabriel and Riley’s relationship ended on a cliffhanger, while Stitch was a strong presence.

Shifting Gears Season 2 will likely bring on more guest stars like Jay Leno and Disney Channel fan-favorite Brenda Song. Based on the Shifting Gears Season 1 finale, Eva Drake (Jenna Elfman) is also almost guaranteed to return.

Kelsey Grammer playing a smiling Frasier Crane in revival of titular TV series

There’s one unseen Shifting Gears character who may finally make their on-screen debut: Sammy Parker. Sammy, Riley’s brother and Matt’s other child, was mentioned several times throughout season 1 of Shifting Gears, but never appeared. Sammy was also revealed to be best friends with Gabriel during their time at North Hollywood High School. Now that there will be a Shifting Gears Season 2, viewers may finally get a glimpse of the elusive Parker in the Shifting Gears’ ever-changing home, who was described as being in the Navy.

What Will Shifting Gears Season 2 Be About?

Old and New Relationships Will Undoubtedly Be Explored in Shifting Gears Season 2

Seann William Scott and Kat Dennings in Shifting Gears Season 1

A lot happened during the Shifting Gears season 1 finale, and Shifting Gears Season 2 is expected to pick up right where the sitcom left off. Tim Allen’s Matt, who is an old-school car enthusiast, shared a surprising kiss with Eve, with whom he found himself at odds. Meanwhile, Riley finally decides whether she wants to reconcile with Jimmy or separate for good; at the end of Season 1, Riley serves her estranged divorce papers and walks away for good. Riley might enter another relationship during Shifting Gears season 2, however. Although Gabriel attempted to confess his feelings for Riley, the tense moment was cut short because Riley fell asleep.

Shifting Gears season 2 has a lot to address among several characters, and ABC has several decisions to make. Will Matt and Eve become a couple? Is Riley going to take a chance on Gabriel, and if so, how will Matt react? With new relationships possibly on the horizon, there’s one big relationship that will continue to take center stage: Matt and Riley. Throughout Shifting Gears Season 1, Matt and Riley butt heads, but also showed an effort on both sides to patch up their old wounds to move forward. Matt and Riley ended up in a better place than they started, but that doesn’t mean their work is done just yet.

When Will Shifting Gears Season 2 Premiere?

Season 2 Doesn’t Have an Official Release Date (Yet)

Nancy Travis as Charlott and Tim Allen in Shifting Gears Season 1

There is going to be another season, but as of May 2025, ABC has not announced a release date. Since the sitcom was just renewed, it’s unlikely that production has started again, so it may be a while for viewers to tune into Shifting Gears season 2. However, there are several possibilities for when Shifting Gears may return. Since the series premiered in January 2025, the second season could premiere in January 2026, depending on when the cameras pick back up. Considering the tight schedule that would entail, Shifting Gears Season 2 has a better chance of premiering during the latter half of 2026.

Currently, ABC has not released its 2026 TV schedule, although other shows besides Shifting Gears that were recently renewed include Grey’s Anatomy (season 22), Shark Tank (season 17), Abbott Elementary (season 5), and High Potential (season 2). In the meantime, while television fans wait for more news, all episodes of Shifting Gears Season 1 are available to stream on Hulu.

10-Flawless-'90s-Sitcoms-That-Desperately-Needed-Another-Season featuring Seinfeld, Sports Night and Married with Children

The sitcom has some stiff competition with other ABC shows, but against other sitcoms, the series has a lot of potential to succeed. Tim Allen is a seasoned sitcom actor who can easily command a room and take the lead, which he has demonstrated throughout his career and in other sitcoms like Home Improvement (1991-1999) and Last Man Standing (2011-2021). Kat Dennings delivers an equally strong presence, while Seann William Scott and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell bring the lighthearted comedy that sitcoms thrive on.

Shifting Gears season 1 ended on a high note, and although the series’ viewership wavered, ABC has all the tools to raise the bar and win back sitcom fans with Shifting Gears season 2.

“That’s Magic in a Bottle”: Reba McEntire Reflects on Reuniting With ‘Reba’ Family on ‘Happy’s Place’

Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman reunite as restaurant co-workers in Happy's Place

In 2001, the world was introduced to a single mom who works two jobs, who loves her kids and never stops, when The WB unleashed the power of Reba. For six seasons, audiences followed along with the titular character, played by country music legend Reba McEntire, as she navigated the ups and downs of life after discovering that her husband had been carrying on an affair with a much younger woman.

McEntire commanded the stage of the sitcom, but was assisted in doing so by a dynamite ensemble that helped the show become the massive success that it was.

Now, more than a decade later, while we may not be getting a Reba reboot, fans were thrilled when McEntire and numerous members of the supporting cast reunited for a completely different series, Happy’s Place. Leaving its first season behind with glowing reviews and viewership numbers, the title has nothing but excitement on the horizon for its upcoming sophomore set of episodes on NBC.

Happy's Place': Will Reba McEntire & Rex Linn's Characters Become a Couple? (Poll) - IMDb

Recently speaking with People, McEntire opened up about this once-in-a-lifetime shot at creating something just as special as the show that came before it and how much it means to her to be working with her ex-castmates again.

“The first time we went into a table read, it was very nostalgic. It was very emotional. I mean, see, I’m getting choked up right now. That’s the way it was for all of us to be so blessed. If you get one really good sitcom that lasts for six seasons, you think, ‘Man, I’ve got the golden ring. That’ll be it. Probably never do it again, because that’s magic in a bottle.’ We got it again and we realize it… It’s a lot of fun and we already know each other’s bad habits and good habits, what we like, what we don’t. So it’s real easy to step in back into that with the crew. You love people you get to work together with that you’ve worked with before. It’s just so much easier than starting over.”

    What Is ‘Happy’s Place’ About?

HAPPY'S PLACE "Acountability" Episode, Reba McEntire as Bobbie, Belissa Escobedo as Isabella.

As mentioned, Happy’s Place and Reba might share some similar faces and creative brains, but the plots are incredibly different. In the new NBC series, McEntire stars as Bobbie, a woman who comes to inherit her father’s bar after his passing. Upon moving back to the area, Bobbie discovers that she’s not the only child who was gifted the titular pub in the deceased’s will, as she comes to find out that she has a much younger half-sister (Belissa Escobedo).

The show follows the day-to-day goings-on and comedic hijinks of the bar, while Bobbie gets back to her roots and embraces her newfound family. Reba alum, Melissa Peterman, joins the cast alongside McEntire’s real-life boyfriend Rex Linn, and an ensemble that also includes Pablo Castelblanco and Tokala Black Elk.

Happy’s Place is now streaming on Peacock.

“All I can share is that Steve Howey,” Peterman, 53, teased exclusively to The Post during the Alzheimer’s Association’s Dance Party to End ALZ on Sunday. “I can just say that Steve Howey maybe stops by ‘Happy’s Place.’ Let’s just say ‘Happy’s Place’ just got happier when Steve Howey stopped by.”

Peterman, Howey, 47, and McEntire, 69, starred on “Reba” for all six seasons from 2001 to 2007 alongside JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Christopher Rich, Scarlett Pomers and Mitch Holleman.

The actress noted, “We’re still family. That’s the beauty of it. We were family then, and we’re family now. I’ve been lucky in my career that I’ve gotten that with the other shows I’ve done, and we’re doing that again. That was one of my favorite things.”

Peterman continued, “Having our original and our new and how much they just loved each other. As you can tell, I just can’t stop smiling. It’s been a lovely, lovely couple of months and we’re just thrilled. We’re happy it’s out there.”

“It felt like coming home,” Peterman gushed. “It felt like coming home in a whole new way, and she’s one of my best friends, so getting to work with her every day is wonderful. And it’s been lovely with the new editions of this cast and I’m truly just grateful and excited that people tuned in. We hope they continue because I promise they will fall in love with these characters. We are just thrilled.”

The “Baby Daddy” alum also shared insight into the cast, which stars Rex Linn, Belissa Escobedo, Pablo Castelblanco, and Tokala Black Elk.

As great as Howey’s appearance on the show is for “Reba” and “Shameless” fans, the “Working Class” actress also has some other dream guest stars in mind.

“Amy Poehler,” Peterman shared. “Tina Fey, Will Ferrell. I love funny people all the time. I would love to have Annie Potts because we worked together on ‘Young Sheldon.’ Any of the ‘Young Sheldon’ people. Lance Barber, who is hilarious, I would love Lance to come aboard.”

“Snoop Dog because he’s next door at ‘The Voice.’ I think Snoop would be really fun!” she shared.

And, of course, anyone from her “Reba” family.

“JoAnna Garcia,” Peterman said. “Some more ‘Reba’ peeps. I mean, duh. Chris Rich. Anyone who wants to come play.”

But don’t count out a “Reba” reboot yet, as one thing’s for sure: Peterman would be onboard.

“I think we all would love that,” she admitted. “I don’t think that’s ever off the table. That’s my opinion. A movie would be fun, a reunion, anything. I’m saying it. As Reba always says, if the time is right and everyone can do it, that’s when things happen, but I don’t think it’s off the table.”

“Ghosts” Shocker! Rebecca Wisocky Unpacks Her Character’s Wild Plot Twist and the Show’s Unstoppable Rise to Stardom.

Rebecca Wisocky, star of the hit CBS comedy “Ghosts,” recently discussed her character’s surprising heritage revelation and the show’s continued success after being renewed for two more seasons.

Wisocky, who plays the ghost of Victorian-era lady Hetty Woodstone, appeared on “CBS Mornings” to talk about a recent episode where her character discovered her Irish heritage — a particularly meaningful revelation since Hetty previously expressed disdain for people who have Irish heritage.

“This kind of character is best when she gets her comeuppance, when she’s proven wrong,” Wisocky said. “She does a Woodstone 180 on this one. That was her horror, to discover that she was Irish. And of course now she’s embraced and become a hibernophile.”

In a surprising twist, Wisocky had actually predicted the development of this story during a previous appearance on the “CBS Mornings.” When shown a clip of her earlier prediction that “Hetty should turn out to be an Irish woman,” Wisocky confirmed she didn’t know it was actually coming.

“I absolutely didn’t,” she said, praising the writers for creating meaningful conflict for the characters.

When asked about her distinctive vocal performance as Hetty, Wisocky explained, “I approach work in a musical way. The way her voice is written and the cadence and the way she changes her mind in the middle of a sentence, it seemed obvious that she would have this voice that would go all these different places.”

During the interview, Wisocky wore a meaningful shamrock brooch, explaining it was the first gift her father gave to his mother about 70 years ago.

“I think this is the first time I’ve worn it,” she said.

“Ghosts” has become a rare success story in television, with CBS and Paramount+ recently renewing it for two additional seasons. Wisocky said she is grateful for the support from both the network and fans.

“It’s laugh-out-loud funny, but you can have interesting, sensitive conversations about deeper themes on the show, so we’re real proud of that,” Wisocky said.

“Ghosts” airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. EST on CBS.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4’s New Casting Creates A Fantastic How I Met Your Mother Reunion 11 Years After The Sitcom’s Ending

Lorna and Cisco in The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer has added Cobie Smulders to the season 4 cast, and the announcement means the upcoming installment will feature an exciting How I Met Your Mother reunion. Smulders’ notoriety grew after playing Maria Hill in the MCU, but she’s also best known for playing Robin Scherbatsky on all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother. Despite ending 11 years ago, HIMYM still has a loyal fanbase who would be happy to see former stars from the show joining worthwhile projects.

Smulders isn’t the only name joining The Lincoln Lawyer season 4’s cast, with newcomers also including Constance Zimmer and Sasha Alexander in important roles. As for the story, Mickey is set to face his biggest challenge yet after being accused of murder following season 3’s cliffhanger ending. The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 is based on The Law of Innocence, the sixth book in Michael Connelly’s series that inspired the Netflix show. As the new season nears, the cast list keeps getting better and better.

Now that Cobie Smulders has joined The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, she won’t be the only cast member on the Netflix show with ties to How I Met Your Mother. Becki Newton, who currently plays Lorna Crane in the Netflix show, previously portrayed Quinn Garvey in How I Met Your Mother seasons 7 and 8. The character was engaged to Neil Patrick Harris’ Barney for a brief time before the pair realized they couldn’t trust each other, with some of that distrust stemming from Barney’s past relationship with Robin.

In How I Met Your Mother season 8, Quinn actually helped Robin pull a prank on Barney for his bachelor party following their own engagement. Now, the HIMYM vets will have a chance to possibly share the screen again for The Lincoln Lawyer season 4. It’s unclear who Smulders will be playing in the upcoming season, but based on her star power, it makes sense to assume that she will play a key role. There’s a chance that she could even be playing someone on the prosecution team, meaning she’d be a new adversary for Mickey’s team.

With Lorna continuing to be a vital member of the team, going from a legal aide to a lawyer, if Smulders is involved at all in Mickey’s case, she will likely cross paths with Lorna. Based on The Lincoln Lawyer season 3’s ending, Mickey needs all the help he can get, so Lorna will hopefully get more time to shine after becoming a lawyer. Whatever’s in store, it would be a treat for HIMYM fans to see Smulders and Newton work together again in a completely different setting.

Cobie Smulders Recently Had Another How I Met Your Mother Reunion In A New TV Show

Smulders Has A History Of Reuniting With Former HIMYM Cast Members

While fans of How I Met Your Mother likely wouldn’t pass up the chance to see some of their favorite actors from the show reunite on other projects, Cobie Smulders recently did just that. The actress guest-starred in Shrinking during the second season of the Apple TV+ series. The comedy-drama is led by Jason Segel, Smulders’ How I Met Your Mother co-star, who played Marshall Eriksen for the duration of the CBS show.

Even without specific character details, it’s exciting to see Smulders’ HIMYM reunion trend continuing with The Lincoln Lawyer season 4.

The reunion between Smulders and Segel in Shrinking was brief, but the encounter left the possibility of a bigger storyline involving the two down the line. Even though How I Met Your Mother ended over a decade ago, it’s great to see actors from the show still appearing in highly popular projects. Smulders reprised her role as Robin for the HIMYM spinoff, How I Met Your Father, and she clearly remains connected to the original show with the ongoing relationships with her former co-stars.

Aside from Shrinking, Smulders also had a recurring role in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which starred Neil Patrick Harris. Shortly after, she worked on Friends from College, a comedy that featured HIMYM vet Sarah Chalke in season 2. Even without specific character details, it’s exciting to see Smulders’ HIMYM reunion trend continuing with The Lincoln Lawyer season 4.

Peacock has given fans a first look at “The Paper,” the upcoming mockumentary series set in the same world as “The Office.”

The first-look image, which can be seen above, was released as part of the NBCUniversal upfront presentation to advertisers on Monday in New York. Cast members Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Oscar Nuñez appeared onstage, where it was also revealed that the show will premiere in September. An exact premiere date will be announced at a later date.

The official logline for “The Paper” states, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.”

In a trailer played at the presentation, it was revealed that the show takes place in the offices of the Toledo Truth-Teller. The documentary crew makes their way around the room, revealing that Oscar (Nuñez) is now working as an accountant for the paper. He is none too happy to see the doc crew again. Impacciatore plays the managing editor, while Gleeson plays an idealistic new employee.

Along with Gleeson, Impacciatore, and Nuñez — the last of whom is reprising his role from the American series — the show also stars Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key.

Greg Daniels, who developed “The Office” for American television, co-created the series with Michael Koman. Both serve as executive producers along with “The Office” creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant as well as Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas (formerly Reveille). Universal Television is the studio.

“The Paper” was one of several Peacock scripted offerings presented to advertisers. Others included the newly-announced animated “Ted” TV show starring Seth MacFarlane, “The Burbs” series reboot starring Keke Palmer, the drama “All Her Fault” starring Sarah Snook, and the new comedy “Dig” starring Amy Poehler.
