The Heartbreaking Truth: Unraveling the Devastating Character Death in ‘We Were Liars’ That Still Haunts

Candice King, Caitlin Fitzgerald and Mamie Gummer on 'We Were Liars'

    Spoiler Alert

    Prime Video

[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for We Were Liars Season 1 and Family of Liars by E. Lockhart.]

The shocking finale of Prime Video’s We Were Liars solved many of the Sinclair family mysteries, but one massive question remains: What happened to Rosemary?

During the second episode of We Were Liars, Carrie (Mamie Gummer) reveals that there was once a fourth Sinclair sister. Following their Father’s Day celebration, Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) asks who came out on top as the favorite daughter, to which Carrie argues, “Let’s be real, none of us stand a chance.” Voicing over a shot of Harris (David Morse) picking up a framed photo of a young girl, she continues, “None of us is going to be his favorite daughter. We grew up, we got messy, and Harris hates mess. So his favorite is always going to be the daughter that didn’t grow up.” The picture frame is then revealed to say “Rosemary – 8th Birthday.”

    E. Lockhart first mentions Rosemary in Family of Liars, which serves as both a prequel and sequel to We Were Liars. During Family of Liars, Lockhart reveals that the youngest Sinclair sister died at only 10 years old. Carrie, who serves as the narrator for Family of Liars, recalls her sister’s untimely death, stating, “It happened at the end of August. Rosemary was swimming at the beach by Goose Cottage. We call it the Tiny Beach. She wore a green bathing suit with little denim pockets on it. Ridiculous pockets. You couldn’t put anything in them. It was her favorite.” She adds, “I wasn’t there. No one in the family was. She was with the au pair we had that year, a twenty-year-old woman from Poland. Agata.”

According to Carrie, Agata had gone inside to fetch some sweaters for her and Rosemary, trusting that Rosemary was a strong swimmer. “When Agata came back outside, Rosemary was far out and struggling. She was beyond the wicked black rocks that line the cove. Agata wasn’t a lifeguard. She didn’t know CPR. She wasn’t even a fast enough swimmer to reach Rosemary in time,” Carrie reveals.

As we now know, present-day Carrie can see the ghost of her late son, Johnny (Joseph Zada).

However, Johnny isn’t the first ghost to haunt Carrie on the island. Throughout Family of Liars, Carrie spends the majority of her time on Beechwood Island comforting the ghost of her youngest sister, while the rest of her family refuses to even mourn her.

During a recent interview with SwooonWe Were Liars creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie revealed that they intend on featuring the plot of Family of Liars in a potential second season. MacKenzie told Swooon, “One of our big intentions in building out the sisters the way that we did was that hopefully viewers will want to know how these villainous women became [the people that they are],” adding that (much like the second book) Season 2 would serve as “the Sinclair sister villain origin story,” while still featuring the present-day cast.

Seeing as the first season of We Were Liars introduced Rosemary’s death as a canon event in the adaptation, we’re fairly certain that her ghost will make an appearance in Season 2, if the show gets renewed. Now, the only question is: Will Rosemary only exist in flashbacks, or will Carrie come face-to-face with two ghosts during the present day?

The Waterfront’s Future Revealed! A Major Decision Has Been Made

The Waterfront’s Future Revealed! A Major Decision Has Been Made.

Is The Waterfront Coming Back for Season 2?

A rivalry more dangerous than Duke vs. UNC just hit North Carolina.

Is 'The Waterfront' Coming Back For Season 2? Here's The Promising News

Criminal families own the TV world right now. The Duttons run Montana in Yellowstone, the Harrigans control London in MobLand, and Dwight Manfredi lords over Oklahoma in Tulsa King. Well, what about North Carolina? That’s where the Buckleys step in.

In Netflix’s The Waterfront, the fishing-family patriarch turned drug kingpin Harlan Buckley (The Iron Claw’s Holt McCallany) attempts to stop his coastal empire—which resides in the fictional town of Havenport—from crumbling. The Buckleys find themselves in serious debt when the series begins.

Even worse? The drug business is a bit harder to handle than the simple cash boon that the family thought it was. If you’re picturing a mix of Ozark and Outer Banks, you’re not too far off.

The Waterfront' Season 2 Theories: Will The Buckleys Kill The Parkers?

The Waterfront also stars Topher Grace (Home Economics) as a deranged drug dealer named Grady. His tenure on the series was sadly short-lived, but I’m sure the shadow of his villainy will loom over the family in potential seasons to come. For now, here’s everything we know about The Waterfront season 2.

Will The Waterfront Return for Season 2?

According to The Waterfront creator Kevin Williamson—yes, he’s also man behind the Scream franchise—plans for season 2 are already in the works. Netflix has yet to officially renew The Waterfront for a second season, but the season 1 finale set up multiple unfinished storylines to carry on as the series continues. Harlan suffers two heart attacks in season 1, and now his wife, Belle (Maria Bello), may destroy the family by selling everything they fought to create for themselves.

The Waterfront' Ending, Explained: What Happens to Grady?

“There’s a whole second season that I have planned out, and a third season, quite frankly,” Williamson told Screen Rant. “I’m hoping I get the chance to tell those stories. I do think it’s a fun show, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done, and I just hope people enjoy it.”

For example, an uncle dipped him into chummed and shark-infested waters, Williamson tells The Hollywood Reporter. He also shares his three-season (maybe more) plan and revisits ‘Dawson’s Creek.’

[This story contains MAJOR spoilers from the season finale of The Waterfront.]

Kevin Williamson had a crazy childhood — and not all of it was captured on Dawson’s Creek. For starters, the creek was not shark-infested waters.

Netflix’s The Waterfront takes the drug-smuggling aspect of Williamson’s youth up a few notches. It also features a tremendous heel turn by Topher Grace (That ‘70s Show). The rest of the cast, which also includes Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Maria Bello and Dave Annable, among others, are quite capable as well.

The Waterfront sees the Buckleys, a successful and affluent coastal North Carolina family on the brink of losing it all, turn to drug-running. As can happen with smuggling, violence follows — a lot of violence. The biggest bang comes in the season finale; if you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading right here.

For the rest of you, our Q&A with Williamson is below.

    ***

Topher Grace was so good as the villain Grady—

I wrote it with him in mind, and I was hoping he would say yes. Ben [Fast], who is my partner on this [and an] executive producer of the sho, had some meetings with him, and I had met Topher over the years so I knew him from around Hollywood. Ben was like, “We need like a Topher Grace character in this role.” And I was like, “Oh my God, he would be great!”

I love taking these sort of likable, fun actors and just turning them into raging psychopaths — I think it’s a lot of fun. Netflix wanted us to keep the show very regional and Southern, and not have him be this tech guy from New York who comes in and starts drug smuggling. [Grady’s] family hails from Atlanta and they were this big, well-to-do, rich family that sort of threw him away because he was trouble. He’s clearly on the spectrum of some major crazy, and it just got worse and worse and worse. I think he got into some stock fraud and ended up in prison, and then came out having met a lot of other criminals, and he decided he had a new game plan.

Did you ever assign a specific “major crazy” diagnosis for him in your mind?

No, no. But he had inherited his grandparents’ land, and I think his family saw it as a way to get rid of him. And so he went down there and did a little opium startup.

Sometimes people die in your stuff and they’re not really dead. Scream comes to mind. Grady is definitely dead though, right?

Yeah, yeah. We’re paving the way for an equally [evil] new villain next year. If people watch [season one].

Is the plan for a villain-of-the-season?

I don’t know if there’s a villain of the season. [For a season two], we have the Parker family that will come into play. They have such a backstory with the Buckleys already.

The Parker family would become season two’s big conflict. We’ve only met Emmett [Terry Serpico] and his father. There are more Parker family members and they will prove to be equally as complicated as the Buckleys — and more dangerous than Grady could ever be.

So Belle (Mario Bello) broke bad at the end of season one — did Cane (Jake Weary) break bad?

Cane really, he was compromised. He finally killed someone, which he didn’t plan on doing. He was trying to not cross that line. He has disposed of a body, he has watched somebody being killed, but [in the past] when it came time to pull the trigger, he couldn’t do it. In episode eight, he finally did it. So there’s no turning back for him. I do think he’s kind of on another path. But in my mind, he’s still the good guy.

    I like him, too.

I like everybody. You have to in order to write them, but I think they’re all good people who have done bad things. The whole thing is: How do you pull them back to good? Once you cross the line, can you go back? Can you ever forgive him?

[The Hollywood Reporter asked actor Jake Weary the same question via email. “Did Cane break bad at the end of season one?” Here’s what he said: “When Cane is standing there with the smoking gun in his hand, I like to imagine the first thought in his mind is, ‘Holy s***, I just killed a human being,’ immediately followed by, ‘but did the right thing, you did it for everything you stand for.’ Which is his family. I’m not sure if he’s necessarily ‘breaking bad’ by killing Grady, but it does symbolize a massive paradigm shift moving forward. Cane is now capable of murder, and what does that say about his emotional fragility? Does it prove something about himself to his father that Harlan never thought was there? I think the more interesting side of it is actually Harlan’s perspective of what transpires, that maybe his own son isn’t who he thought he was.]

[Back to Williamson for the rest of the Q&A] So, where are the Buckleys at exactly, money-wise, at the end of season one?

At the end of season one, they had broke even, and they were doing well. The problem was, as Harlan [Holt McCallany] explained it, running drugs is a drug. Just making that money; you start prospering and you see everything getting better. Quite frankly, it’s the thing that brought him back to life. It was one thing he’s really good at. And so, who would want to give that up? He’s starting to live again. But now they’re beholden to another organization, and they have to work for the Parkers. Now they have a bigger foe to deal with.

Waterfront settings are all the rage in TV series these days — it’s wealth porn. Beyond the obvious natural beauty, what makes those locations so inherently watchable?

I don’t know. I think maybe there’s a wish fulfillment to it. If you live in the middle of the country, you don’t see the ocean a lot. And I love it. I grew up on the water. I think it’s so picturesque. When you think of just like a happy place to go, I think of the water.

The reason we wanted to do this is, there’s such beauty there, but what’s under the surface? We played with the whole idea of the duality of life, and I think that happens. It’s such a beautiful setting. I personally love it. and it’s meant to be a fun show. It shouldn’t be some heady… I didn’t want to make a show that was homework. I wanted it to be watchable and fun and bingey; a summer fun show. We really tried to stay in the bingey world with the tone of the show, in the sense of humor about it also holding true to the characters. We wanted a fun show.

You’re on Netflix — do you also feel the Bloodline vibes?

It does have Bloodline vibes because of the water and — [Bloodline] was in Florida, right?

Yeah, Islamorada in the Florida Keys.

So it had a little bit of a different vibe, but it was equally as beautiful. And it did have a family at its core. Yes, there are definitely some Bloodline vibes.

Netflix describes The Waterfront as being based on “true events.” I’m told that means it’s based on your childhood. So, what the fuck happened in your childhood?

I mean, it’ll go longer than this Zoom. I’ve been through a lot — I’ve been dipped in sharks. I’ve done it all there.

You were (purposely) dunked headfirst into the ocean with sharks around you?

It was a long story. Yes, I was 10 years old — it was a silly thing. It was a prank that my uncle played on me. He was a kid, he was a punk. Once again, very good guy who just did silly — there was that one day we woke up and there were just sharks everywhere. And they had a pistol, and they were throwing chum over, and when the sharks came to the surface, they’d shoot it.

    Does that kill a shark?

Well, they’d shoot it in the head for fun. It was so awful, it was just awful. I remember I wouldn’t even go to the edge and look over because I was so terrified. And the boat was (rocking). I remember my uncle said, “I’ll hold you.” And then, of course, he picked me up to held me over, like an idiot.

    Jesus.

He was a kid. He turned out to be my favorite uncle.

    You sure about that ranking?

He was my favorite uncle, so I loved him dearly. He’s passed.

My mom wasn’t part of this story. My dad, in the ’80s, was a fisherman. He worked on the shrimp trawler, and the business had bellied up, and so my dad had an opportunity to smuggle some marijuana…

    Oh, this really happened?

Well, it was marijuana, but yeah.

At the time, we basically considered that opium.

It was in the ’80s, and he did some smuggling with some other people. He got caught, and he went to prison for a little while. Very much like if you’d — see, you didn’t watch Dawson’s Creek!

Dawson’s Creek, from left: Katie Holmes, James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams. Fred Norris/©Columbia TriStar Television/courtesy Everett Collection

    Sorry about that.

Joey’s [Katie Holmes] dad went to prison for smuggling marijuana. He was in prison, and she had to go visit him there. So, yeah, I’ve been writing about this for a while. Everybody’s like, “Oh, this is true!” I go, “Well, I wrote about it my first TV show.”

Yeah, that’s my bad. It was a pretty big show and I’m TV Editor, I should probably know that…

No, no it’s OK. [Pauses] I haven’t seen every episode.

What was your dad’s role in the smuggling operation?

He just had a boat. He was a runner. He didn’t own a beach house, he didn’t own a restaurant. That was all fiction. I really did embellish and exaggerate. You write what you know, but it always starts with a kernel of truth, same as Dawson’s Creek. That’s autobiographical, but hardly any of that happened to me.

I always talked with my dad about making this show and telling the story. He was like, “OK, go for it. Wait ‘til I’m dead, but then do it.” And then he actually said, “No, don’t wait ‘til I’m dead. I want to watch it happen.” And then, of course, he didn’t make it — but he was close. He had a huge sense of humor, kind of like Harlan does.

You’ve had some long-running franchises — ScreamDawson’s CreekThe Vampire Diaries. But that’s not really the trend in TV these days. Do you have a max number of seasons in mind for The Waterfront?

You know, it’s interesting. This is a new landscape. Netflix is a new world to me. Streaming is a new world to me. I think, three seasons? If they wanted four…

The good news is, with a family, I feel like we have such a great cast of actors that we could explore beyond three seasons. But I went in there pitching three — that’s [Netflix’s) magic number. In the back of my head, [I was thinking], “Oh, this could go four [seasons]. It’s only eight episodes.” I mean, three seasons is one season of network [television]. I could go five seasons if it’s a success, but I’d be happy with three. Three would be a solid number.

I used to watch shows for years and years and years, and I saw every episode of CSI, but now I’m in a place where I just watched three seasons and I’m kind of done.

The Waterfront is now streaming all episodes on Netflix.

[BREAKING NEWS] ‘Shifting Gears’ Star Kat Dennings Just Spoil Her Return

Kat Dennings as Riley looking back from the driver's seat of a car in Shifting Gears

Kat Dennings made headlines for her performance earlier this year in Shifting Gears, but before she ever teamed up with Tim Allen for the popular sitcom, she played arguably her most famous character of all time. Dennings debuted as Darcy Lewis in 2011’s Thor, one of the first MCU movies, and she played the character as recently as last year in animation and 2022 in live-action, making her one of the most tenured veterans in the franchise.

When Marvel announced the cast for Avengers: Doomsday back in March, Dennings was not one of the names to receive a casting chair. However, a new Instagram post from the star may have just teased her return in the film. Dennings posted a photo of her holding an extremely realistic Captain America shield that could belong to the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie. She captioned the photo, “Don’t get excited, I’m just sampling the hardware,” but this might well be a misdirection. Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production, and Mackie has shared videos of himself on set — it’s possible Dennings just spoiled her role as Darcy in Avengers: Doomsday with a simple picture.

It hasn’t been long since Dennings shared a funny story relating to her time in the MCU. The Shifting Gears star recently visited Avengers campus at Disney World for the first time, and she was initially confused as to why she was drawing so many wayward eyes and earning so many waves from strangers. It then hit her that she was garnering this attention because she is an MCU star. Dennings’ most recent live-action MCU role came in Thor: Love and Thunder, and she also voiced the character in What If…? Season 3.

Although ABC has not assigned Shifting Gears Season 2 an official release date, all signs point to it being early next year, likely in the same window that Season 1 released. Star Tim Allen recently shared an update on the show, confirming that production on the hit series was due to begin soon. The show was written and created for television by Mike and Julie Thacker-Scully, with John PasquinVictor Gonazlez, and Danielle Fishel serving as directors on Season 1.

Dennings has not been officially confirmed for a role in Avengers: Doomsday. Stay tuned to Collider for more MCU updates and coverage of Shifting Gears Season 2 on Hulu.

  • Back to the Past, Forward to the Fun! “Happy’s Place” Season 2 Unlocks More “Reba” Cast Surprises

Back to the Past, Forward to the Fun! “Happy’s Place” Season 2 Unlocks More “Reba” Cast Surprises

Back to the Past, Forward to the Fun! “Happy’s Place” Season 2 Unlocks More “Reba” Cast Surprises.

HAPPY'S PLACE -- "The Macallister Girls" Episode 110 -- Pictured: (l-r) Reba McEntire as Bobbie, Belissa Escobedo as Isabella

Happy’s Place is the latest sitcom starring Reba McEntire, but the joy of this show goes beyond that as it also reunites McEntire with her Reba co-star Melissa Peterman. Not only that, but Happy’s Place has featured other cameos from the beloved former sitcom, including Steve Howey (Van on Reba) and Christopher Rich (Brock). Reba executive producer Christopher Abbott is also one of the co-creators of Happy’s Place, so it’s basically a big reunion.

Now that a second has officially been confirmed, fans are curious as to whether or not we’ll see other Reba stars make appearances on Happy’s Place, like maybe JoAnna Garcia or Scarlett Pomers, who once played McEntire’s on-screen daughters Cheyenne and Kyra.

Good news for anyone hoping for more fun guest stars, Peterman recently told Gold Derby that she anticipates more “blast from the pasts” from the Reba cast. Obviously she can’t give away who they’re hoping to get, but Garcia is probably the most in-demand given her significant role in the original series.

Happy's Place Cast Update Sets Up A Major Reba Reunion, 18 Years After The Comedy Series Ended

The nice thing about Happy’s Place is that while it has had some casting overlap, we’re getting to see these actors interact in much different ways. For starters, Peterman’s character, Gabby, is on friendlier terms with McEntire’s Bobbie. Howey also gets to play something different than his dopey role as Van, this time coming on the show as a friend of Gabby’s. And Rich plays a tattoo artist this time around.

Not everyone knows that McEntire and Peterman have been working together for a long time and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Outside of the sitcom world, the two actresses also co-host a podcast together called Living & Learning.

Happy’s Place feels similar to Reba in many ways. It’s a multi-camera series filmed in front of a live studio audience and there’s something very warm and nostalgic about the vibes. Peterman says she really hopes that the show gets to continue for many years to come and morph into something that people will cozy up to rewatch again and again. We’ve all got our feel-good sitcoms and I think this could easily become one.

Happy's Place' stars Reba McEntire, Melissa Peterman on success after 'Reba'

Apart from just anticipating additional Reba stars to make appearances, Peterman also says she would love to have the legendary Jean Smart play her mother. Smart is currently killing it on the Emmy-winning series Hacks, but having her act opposite of Peterman would be iconic.

Guest stars are exciting, but Happy’s Place boasts a great main cast. Belissa Escobedo stars alongside McEntire and Peterman as Bobbie’s paternal half-sister. The two sisters must figure out how to manage a Tennessee bar together when it is discovered that they both inherited half-ownership.

(ABC/Byron Cohen)STEVE HARVEYABC

Those of us who grew up with “Sesame Street” still remember Guy Smiley, the stereotypical game show host as originally voiced by Jim Henson. Guy was loud, boisterous and the host of everything from “Here Is Your Life” and “Beat the Time” to “Name That Sound!”

Guy Smiley served a purpose for “Sesame Street,” and so did real-life game show hosts. It was a very specific (and also, very non-diverse) group: Bob Barker, Monty Hall, Jack Berry, Bill Cullen, Wink Martindale, Bob Eubanks, Richard Dawson, Gene Rayburn, Alex Trebek and many more. As he retires, “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak may be the last of that string of game show hosts pretty much only known for being a game show host. (Sure, some of them were actors and many of them came from radio or other TV roles, but they’ll always be remembered first and foremost for their hosting gig.)

Game show host is a tough job, requiring a lot of skill to juggle the gameplay, keep the contestants involved and the audience entertained. But as parodies like “Guy Smiley” hint at, there’s also a cheese factor to it. That’s why, when Steve Harvey first took over “Family Feud” in 2010, he endured a fair amount of ribbing from pals and fellow comedians.

“You would not believe the calls I was getting from guys that I knew,” Harvey tells me. “’Steve, you’re doing a game show, man? Getting into that cornball business?’ Well, do you know the checks they’re writing for this cornball business if you can take this cornball business and turn it into a hit?”

Drew Carey took over “The Price is Right” in 2007 and Wayne Brady began hosting “Let’s Make a Deal” in 2009. After Harvey joined their ranks, the flood gates opened. Now, almost every game show, particularly in primetime, is fronted by a star who’s doing this as a side hustle. Rob Lowe (“The Floor”), Jane Lynch (“The Weakest Link”), Elizabeth Banks (“Press Your Luck”), Keke Palmer (“Password”), RuPaul (“Lingo”), Jimmy Kimmel (“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”) and Jimmy Fallon (“That’s My Jam”), just to name a few.

“They found out,” Harvey says. “Everybody now tries to find that magic. Look at all the game shows, they went and got somebody with some face recognition.”

Family Feud's Steve Harvey Left Shocked And Speechless By Both Face-Off Answers To 'Sexy Dreams' Question

The rise of the superstar game show host coincides with the elevation of the genre to the primetime Emmys, which began last year as part of an ongoing realignment between the L.A.-based Television Academy and New York’s National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Perhaps the most high-profile game shows are now in primetime anyway, so the move made sense.

Last year, “Jeopardy!” — which it should be noted, isn’t hosted by a Hollywood star, but rather by the show’s famed long-running champ Ken Jennings — won the Emmy for game show, over “Family Feud,” “The Price Is Right,” “That’s My Jam” and “Wheel of Fortune.”

“I think the key to being a great host is you’ve got to be gracious; you’ve got to be willing to laugh at yourself,” says Harvey, who also hosts “Celebrity Family Feud” and “Judge Steve Harvey” for ABC. “But then you’ve got to know the line of how far you can push the joke with a contestant. You can’t make the audience think you’re being harsh with them. But at the same time, you’ve got to have fun with them.”

But really, Harvey has the secret to why game shows are truly having a moment right now: In an era when there aren’t many comedies in primetime, game shows are the new sitcom.

“I’ve taken a game show and turned it into a comedy show, really,” he says. “’Family Feud’ is a show about the survey of what a hundred people think. Nobody cares what a hundred people think anymore, because we’ve got Google, we’ve got YouTube, we can find out what you think. They gave me the leeway to do it my way, so it’s not so much the question and answers, it’s more the relationship between the contestant and the host. And that’s what makes it pretty fun.”

Time to brush up on your comedy skills, Guy Smiley.

The Price Is Right has been sharing classic moments on its social media channels while viewers wait for the new season, and a clip posted on Monday (August 5) had fans in hysterics. It featured a mom and daughter duo who made host Drew Carey blush by grinding close to him!

The clip in question was shared on the official The Price Is Right Instagram page and featured mother-and-daughter duo Sharol and Tionna. The excitable pair boogied their way to the stage, where they greeted Drew Carey by dancing and bumping their hips into his. Carey blushed and laughed before explaining the rules of the game.

Sharol and Tionna were faced with the Grand Game, in which contestants can win up to $10,000 by picking products under a target price. For those unfamiliar, the contestants begin with $1 displayed on the board and are then given a target price. They are then shown six grocery items, four of which are priced below the target and two of which are priced above.

The mom and daughter were given a target price of $6.50, with Carey telling them, “All you have to do is tell me which four [are under that price], and every time you get one right, we’ll add one zero to that board.”

Sharol and Tionna were then shown the six items, which included a 16-ounce container of Mom’s Best Cereals Quick Oats, one Scrub Daddy’s Scrub Mommy Scrubbing Sponge, six-count box of Nestlē’s Abuelita Hot Chocolate Tablets, a 25-ounce jar of Yo Mama’s Spicy Marinara Tomato Sauce, one 0.34-ounce box of Mommy’s Bliss Baby Probiotic Drops, and one 11-ounce package of Grandma’s Frozen Noodles Wide Egg Noodles.

“Give me one that you know for sure is less than $6.50,” Carey asked.

The contestants talked it through and looked to the studio audience for guidance, ultimately settling on the noodles as their first guess. Their pick was right, as the noodles were priced at $4.29. They continued their success by picking the oats and the sponge next.

With $1,000 on the board, Sharol and Tionna could have walked away at that point. “You guys have $1,000; you can stop right now if you want because if you get the next one wrong, you lose everything,” Carey reminded them. “[But] you do get an extra nine grand if you get this next one right.”

After discussing their options, Sharol and Tionna decided to continue and selected the hot chocolate. Carey revealed the price of the hot chocolate as $5.49, meaning the lovable mother and daughter bagged themselves $10,000. The pair started screaming and running around the stage as the audience cheered them on.

“They bumped up a BIG win… nice one,” wrote one Instagram commenter.

    “Great show,” said another.

One fan argued that the pair “cheated” because they were “dollar up bidders,” meaning a tactic where players on Contestant’s Row outbid the previous guesser by $1.

However, another user argued, “They didn’t Cheat! It has always been part of the rules. Recently, someone bid $1 over another bidder. Much to everyones surprise, the original bidder was the actual price and won the extra $500.”

Every episode of The Price is Right features an undisclosed assortment of games, and that variety is part of the appeal. But fans are offering their two cents about the “3 Strikes” game, which they claim is “not fun” after 14 players lost consecutively with no winner in a staggering three years.

For those unfamiliar, “3 Strikes” is a pricing game that debuted on TPIR on February 12, 1976. In it, contestants can win a brand-new luxury car by correctly guessing its price. The contestant is shown eight baseballs: five white ones with non-repeating numbers on them, each representing one of the five numbers in the car’s price. There are also three red “strike” balls with an X on them.

After all eight balls are shuffled into a rotating drum, the contestant blindly draws a ball from the bag. If they pick a numbered ball, they must correctly put it in the right position of the car’s total price. If they’re right, the ball is discarded, and the digit is lit up in the price display. But if they’re wrong, the ball goes back into rotation. However, if the contestant draws a red ball with a strike, a foghorn sounds instead, and an X marker is lit on the board before the ball is discarded. If the contestant draws three strike balls, the game ends.

On Monday, November 18’s episode a player bombed out with zero correct guesses and gave a big thumbs down mid-way (above) looking frustrated. She sarcastically told Drew Carey, “I love your positivity!” as she floundered. After she lost, Carey exclaimed, “That was a rough one” and the audience fell silent.

After it aired, a fan started a discussion in the TPIR Reddit forum, arguing that the segment is “too hard” and others agreed.

“3 Strikes is not a fun game,” the fan titled the post. The user continued, “Every time the contestant pulls a strike Drew says it’s good because there’s one less strike to worry about. That’s specious reasoning and it annoys me so much. Today the contestant even said ‘I love your positivity’ to Drew. I like to think she meant it sarcastically. This game is just way too hard. Sure, it’s played for a very expensive car, but the odds are so low and it’s based mostly on luck. I get annoyed every time it’s played. Does anyone know the winning statistics on this game?”

Another fan replied, “I don’t have the exact stats but there was a period of time where someone only won once in 6 years during a particularly bad drought. I can also say that, even if you play perfectly and guess all 5 digits correctly as you pull them out, your odds of winning that game are 37.5%. So even a perfect play will only win 1/3 of the time. I put ‘3 Strikes,’ ‘That’s Too Much’, and the dollar game in the same grouping as barely winnable games. At least 3 Strikes is always for an expensive vehicle, I guess.”

“I legitimately can’t remember the last time I saw a player get more than 1, maybe 2 numbers before striking out so I’m not a fan of this game either lol,” wrote a third.

“Not much of a spoiler but surprise, she got zero numbers,” wrote a fourth about Monday’s episode.

“As soon as I saw that game, I knew she would lose,” wrote a fifth. “It’s the “F*** you contestant, you’re not getting a car” game.

“I despise 3 strikes. Way too much luck involved,” wrote a sixth.

“It would be nice to be able to buy another chance with a pricing game after 2 strikes and call it a “foul tip” with a successful price,” wrote a seventh.

“And it takes forever to lose. Just a long, annoying, slim chance to win game,” wrote an additional fan.

“The last time we had a win was January 18, 2021 where a Range Rover was won,” observed one more. We currently went through 14 playings without a winner.” According to TPIR Fandom, there hasn’t been a winner since January 2021.

‘Wheel Of Fortune’ When Will Vanna White Retire?

Vanna White Interview With ABC News - Vanna White's 2022 Net Worth - YouTube/ABC News

Wheel of Fortune icon and letter-turner Vanna White is finally talking about retirement and her plans for her future. She just battled it out for a proper contract and will now be sticking around for a few years longer. Yet, does she have any idea when she will hand her gig over to someone new? Read on for more details.

Wheel Of Fortune When Will Vanna White Retire?

Vanna White’s future was up in the air on Wheel of Fortune. Host Pat Sajak revealed that he would be leaving the long-running game show after Season 41. It was then unclear what that meant for Vanna and if she would depart with him. His replacement was revealed to be Ryan Seacrest but White soon needed to renegotiate her contract. Not only did she make significantly less than Sajak but she had not gotten a raise in nearly two decades. So, she wanted what was fair and earned. At the same time, production allegedly wanted to make this her final contract and allow for her to transition out.
    Pat and Vanna/YouTubeVanna, Pat-YouTube
She will be on the show until 2026 so she will make the switch with Ryan Seacrest. This is good news for faithful viewers who need some consistency with the series. So, does Vanna have any plans to retire? According to The Sun, she spoke about what is to come on GMA. Admittedly, she cannot believe that she has been on the show with Pat for forty-one years.

“I think of Pat [Sajak] as family and always will. We called ourselves Ken and Barbie. I mean, we’re not quite that today. But Ken and Barbie go together and always have. Peanut butter and jelly go together. Pat and Vanna go together.”

Yet, when he revealed he was leaving Wheel of Fortune, it made Vanna White stop and think if that was her path. She soon realized that retirement was not what she wanted just yet. As aforementioned, because she loves her job and the contestants, she will be around through 2026. No word if that is actually her last contract.

    A New Era

Vanna White is starting to get to know Ryan Seacrest better as the transition will hopefully be a smooth one for viewers. More so, the chemistry has to work between Vanna and Seacrest. No word on how the transition will actually happen but Vanna has made it clear that she is not ready to hang up her hat. She fought hard for the proper contract and now she is sticking around. Pat’s daughter, Maggie Sajak has been floated as a possible future replacement but time will tell.

Are you happy that Vanna is sticking around for a few more years? Or, do you think she should bow out gracefully with Pat Sajak? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
