Kelsea Ballerini Says Her Post-‘Voice’ Plans Are a Bit More Relaxed

Ballerini wrapped up her first headlining arena tour in early April and will see the end of her coaching duties on “The Voice” on May 20. To say she’s had a busy 2025 so far is an understatement. Needless to say, she’s looking to catch her breath a bit and have some downtime.

The country singer spoke with Extra TV following “The Voice” semi-finals and, when asked how she’ll top her recent accomplishments, she answered, “I don’t know.”

Ballerini continued, “I’m really in this chapter where I’ve always been very goal oriented and I have this bucket list and I update it every year at the beginning of the year and I send it to my team and we’ve crossed a lot off.”

She added, “And so I think this next chapter for me is going to … I’m going to be quiet for a little bit and figure out what’s next and actually take that time to be intentional with myself and my real life and make sure that whatever is next is thoughtful.”

In a May 2025 interview with Country Now, Ballerini also dished on what’s ahead for her in the near future. “I’m going to shift into real life for a bit and hopefully within doing that for a while, start to very slowly write again and figure out what’s next.”

“But catch me in Charleston with the dogs,” she added. “That’s where I’ll be for most of the summer.”

Ballerini Shares 1 of the Best Parts of Coaching

When Extra TV asked Ballerini about the “best part” of helping “The Voice” singers, she explained how she also gained something. “I honestly feel like every time I’m giving advice, I’m also reminding myself to take it. Because I’ve been in such a whirlwind season of my career that I also need a tune-up.”

She noted that her advice is a helpful reminder for her own career, saying, “That’s been a really beautiful kind of mirror experience.”

Ballerini also touched on one of the challenges she faced coming on the show since she doesn’t feel she’s “a household name” like the other coaches.

“I knew that was going to be mainly a challenge for myself to still feel like I had value in the seat,” she explained. “And I think that’s been the most beautiful thing, is like finding that value and also reminding myself how to be the best artist I can be too.”

  • Fans Slam Jessica Simpson’s ‘American Idol’ Performance As The Star Delivers First TV Performance in 15 Years

Fans Slam Jessica Simpson’s ‘American Idol’ Performance As The Star Delivers First TV Performance in 15 Years

Fans Deliver Harsh Verdict on Jessica Simpson’s ‘American Idol’ Comeback After 15 Years

It was billed as a triumphant return, a long-awaited moment for fans who had missed Jessica Simpson’s presence on television. After a 15-year hiatus from live TV performances, the singer and actress graced the stage of “American Idol” during its Season 23 finale.1 However, the reception to Simpson’s performance has been far from the celebratory homecoming many anticipated, with a significant portion of viewers taking to social media to voice their disappointment and even harsh criticism.

Simpson, who performed a medley of her new single “Blame Me” and her 2005 hit cover of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” alongside finalist Josh King, was met with a mixed bag of reactions. While some fans expressed excitement at seeing her back on stage and complimented her appearance, a vocal contingent of viewers were less than impressed with her vocal delivery and overall performance.

The criticism ranged from disappointment in her vocal quality to accusations of the performance being “uncomfortable” and a “train wreck.”2 Many took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to share their unfiltered opinions. Comments such as “The Jessica Simpson Josh King American Idol performance might be the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever seen!” and “She really just never learned how to use her voice. Perfect example of natural talent with terrible technique” flooded social media feeds.

Some viewers even directed their critique towards the perceived awkwardness of the duet with Josh King, suggesting a lack of chemistry or that King was struggling to keep up. One user humorously implied that even judge Luke Bryan’s facial expressions betrayed a less-than-enthusiastic reaction, despite the judges’ eventual applause.

This harsh reaction from a segment of the “American Idol” audience casts a shadow over what was intended to be a significant comeback moment for Simpson. Having stepped away from actively pursuing her music career for over a decade, citing frustration with the industry after being dropped from her record label, her return to the live stage was highly anticipated by many.

Despite the negative feedback, some fans did come to Simpson’s defense, praising her for getting back on stage and seemingly enjoying herself. Comments highlighting her appearance and expressing joy at seeing her perform again were also present amidst the criticism.

Simpson herself has yet to publicly address the polarized reactions to her “American Idol” performance. However, this mixed reception underscores the challenges that artists face when returning to the spotlight after a significant absence, particularly in the age of instant and often unforgiving social media commentary. While her return marks a new chapter with the release of her latest EP, “Nashville Canyon, Part 1,” this “American Idol” performance has undoubtedly provided a stark reminder of the intense scrutiny that comes with fame and public performance. The conversation surrounding her comeback, it seems, has only just begun.

Tim Allen’s New Sitcom Faced Potential Cancellation Scare at ABC

Just months after its highly anticipated debut, Tim Allen’s new sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” reportedly faced serious consideration for cancellation by ABC.1 This news, which has sent ripples through the entertainment industry and among the show’s dedicated fanbase, comes despite the multi-camera comedy enjoying a strong initial reception.

Tim Allen lists $1.95M Bel Air home | Page Six

According to sources close to the network, while “Shifting Gears” launched with impressive viewership numbers in January, becoming ABC’s most-watched streaming premiere for a comedy to date, its performance in subsequent weeks raised concerns.3 Live viewership steadily declined after the initial buzz, leading network executives to reportedly weigh the financial implications of continuing the series, especially considering its star-studded cast, including Allen and Kat Dennings.

The premise of “Shifting Gears” revolves around the relationship between estranged father and daughter, Matt (Allen) and Riley (Dennings), as they attempt to rebuild their bond after Riley and her teenage children move back into Matt’s home. The show also features a talented ensemble cast including Seann William Scott and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell. While the storylines have resonated with a segment of the audience, the dip in consistent viewership seemingly put its future in jeopardy.

5 Reasons Tim Allen's Shifting Gears Reviews Are So Bad

This revelation highlights the often-cutthroat nature of network television, where even shows with promising starts can find themselves on the chopping block due to fluctuating ratings and budgetary considerations. The cost associated with established stars like Tim Allen often adds another layer of complexity to renewal decisions.

However, it’s important to note that while cancellation was reportedly considered, the final decision remains with ABC. The network is expected to make its final renewal announcements in the coming weeks, leaving the fate of “Shifting Gears” hanging in the balance. Factors that could still play a role in its potential renewal include its performance in delayed viewing, its appeal to specific demographics, and the overall strength of ABC’s comedy slate for the upcoming season.

The possibility of “Shifting Gears” facing cancellation so early in its run has undoubtedly caused anxiety among its fans, who appreciate Tim Allen’s return to the sitcom format. Many are drawing parallels to his previous successful ABC sitcom, “Last Man Standing,” which was initially canceled by the network before being revived by Fox for several additional seasons.

Whether “Shifting Gears” will follow a similar trajectory remains to be seen. For now, fans will be eagerly awaiting ABC’s official announcement, hoping that the initial success and the show’s comedic potential will be enough to secure a second season for Tim Allen’s latest venture. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining if “Shifting Gears” gets another chance to rev its engines on ABC.

  • Happy’s Place is rated better than Reba Revival for controversial reasons

Happy’s Place is rated better than Reba Revival for controversial reasons

Happy’s Place is rated better than Reba Revival for controversial reasons.

Happy’s Place’s Unexpected Reign: Controversy Propels it Past Potential “Reba Revival”

The television landscape is often unpredictable, and the recent success of Reba McEntire’s new sitcom, “Happy’s Place,” over the much-discussed possibility of a “Reba” revival, is a prime example. While many fans held onto hope for a continuation of the beloved early 2000s series, “Happy’s Place” has not only arrived but, according to some metrics and online buzz, has surpassed the hypothetical revival in terms of ratings and attention – and perhaps for some surprisingly controversial reasons.

One of the key factors contributing to “Happy’s Place’” unexpected success, and the controversy surrounding its higher rating compared to a non-existent “Reba Revival,” lies in its deliberate departure from the familiar formula. Creator Kevin Abbott, who also helmed the original “Reba,” explicitly stated his intention to explore “more adult stories” in “Happy’s Place,” moving away from the traditional family sitcom dynamic.1 This shift is evident in the premise: Reba’s character, Bobbie, inherits her estranged father’s restaurant and is forced to run it with her previously unknown half-sister, Isabella.

Reba's Melissa Peterman Shares Celebs Who Want to Cameo on Happy's Place | Us Weekly

This new dynamic, particularly the introduction of Isabella (played by Belissa Escobedo), has become a significant point of contention and a potential driver of the show’s higher visibility. Some viewers find Isabella’s character – often portrayed as a Gen Z individual clashing with Bobbie’s more traditional Southern sensibilities – to be a refreshing and humorous source of conflict. The generational differences and the forced sibling relationship create a dynamic that feels contemporary and allows for storylines that the original “Reba,” with its established family structure, might not have explored.

However, this is also where the controversy arises. A segment of the “Reba” fanbase finds Isabella’s character grating, even “unlikable,” as some online comments suggest.3 They argue that the focus on this new, divisive character detracts from the core appeal of Reba McEntire and the kind of heartwarming, family-centric humor they cherished in the original series. The very element that makes “Happy’s Place” distinct and perhaps more appealing to a broader, potentially younger audience, is the same element that alienates some of the dedicated “Reba” loyalists.

The irony is palpable. The very reason a “Reba Revival” was so desired was the nostalgia for the established characters and their relationships. Yet, “Happy’s Place,” by intentionally forging a new path with different character dynamics and more “adult” themes, has seemingly captured more attention and potentially higher ratings. This suggests that while nostalgia is a powerful force, a direct retread of a beloved series might not always resonate as strongly as something new, even if that newness comes with its own set of controversies and divisive elements.

Happy's Place Is Better Than A Reba Revival Because Of One Divisive Character

Furthermore, the casting of Melissa Peterman, who played the iconic Barbra Jean in “Reba,” in a new role as Gabby in “Happy’s Place” has also contributed to the conversation.4 While her comedic timing remains a draw, the similarity of Gabby’s eager and somewhat overbearing personality to Barbra Jean has led some to criticize the show for not fully differentiating itself. However, for others, Peterman’s presence is a welcome link to the past, even in a new context.

Ultimately, the “controversial reasons” behind “Happy’s Place’” apparent success over a “Reba Revival” boil down to its willingness to be different. It has embraced new characters and explored different comedic and thematic territory, which has garnered attention and likely a wider audience, even if it means alienating some of the original “Reba” faithful. The debate highlights the delicate balance between honoring a beloved legacy and forging a new identity in the ever-evolving world of television. While a “Reba Revival” remains a tantalizing “what if,” “Happy’s Place” has carved its own, perhaps more contentious, but undeniably successful, place in the current sitcom landscape.

Maritza’s introduction in the first season added a significant layer to the central storyline. As the mother of Bobbie’s newly discovered half-sister, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), Maritza’s presence brought both heartwarming moments and a touch of dramatic flair as the two sisters navigated their newfound familial bond.

Her return in season two promises to further explore the complexities of their evolving relationship and the extended family dynamic within the walls of Happy’s Place. Machado’s compelling portrayal of Maritza resonated with audiences, and her continued involvement is sure to be a welcome addition.

Equally exciting is the confirmed return of Emma Kenney as Gracie, Bobbie’s daughter.2 Gracie’s appearance in the first season, particularly when she returned home from her military deployment, showcased the challenges and joys of family reunions and the strong bond between mother and daughter.

Kenney’s portrayal of Gracie’s independent spirit and her at times conflicting relationship with Bobbie provided relatable and humorous moments. With Gracie set to return for season two, viewers can anticipate further exploration of her character’s journey and her interactions with the unique personalities that frequent Happy’s Place.

Who Plays Reba's Daughter, Gracie, on Happy's Place?

The return of both Maritza and Gracie alongside the core cast, including Reba McEntire as Bobbie, Belissa Escobedo as Isabella, Melissa Peterman as the ever-chatty Gabby, and Rex Linn as the soft-spoken Emmett, hints at a season that will delve deeper into the established relationships and continue to build the world of the beloved tavern.

As “Happy’s Place” gears up for its second season premiere this November on NBC, the return of Maritza and Gracie adds another layer of anticipation for fans. Their established connections to the central characters and the storylines introduced in the first season promise more heartfelt moments, comedic situations, and a deeper exploration of the meaning of family – both the one you’re born into and the one you find in the most unexpected of places, like a lively Knoxville bar named Happy’s Place.

Her excitement to witness McEntire and Peterman back in their comedic element further underscores the genuine camaraderie amongst the “Reba” alumni.

While it’s unclear whether Garcia Swisher will reprise her role as Cheyenne or step into a new character within the “Happy’s Place” narrative, showrunner Kevin Abbott has previously teased the possibility of bringing back familiar faces in unexpected ways.
