Shockwaves on Jeopardy! as Multi-Day Champion Is Toppled — Fans React With Awe and Surprise

Jeopardy! fans’ jaws drop after multi-day champ Steven Olsen is dethroned and a familiar TV star takes the podium

JEOPARDY! fans have been left stunned after multi-day champ, Steven Olsen, lost his winning streak, and a former TV actor tested his luck at the podium.

After having four consecutive wins under his belt, Steven was dethroned by a new competitor, Vickie Talvola.

Steven, a band director from Princeton, Illinois, has been the one to beat the last week, securing $74,382 in winnings.

Vickie, a quantitative trader from Jersey City, New Jersey, made her Jeopardy! debut on Thursday night’s episode, alongside Erik Nielsen, a substitute teacher from Hollywood, California.

Steven kicked off the game with a strong start, raking in $4,200 by the show’s first break.

However, Vickie and Erik quickly caught up to the trivia whiz, and the latter appeared confident she could take the whole game and bet it all on the Daily Double 3.

Her instincts were right on the money, as she ended up running away with $26,400, versus Erik’s $12,700 and Steven’s $6,400.

Vickie again blew away the competition during Final Jeopardy!, as she was the only one who answered the clue correctly.

After wagering just $7, she improved her winnings to $26,407.

This was the highest earnings of the game, compared to Erik’s $12,500 and Steven’s just $1.

Viewers weren’t only captivated by the player’s trivia knowledge, but also by how familiar one of the contestants looked.

In a Reddit thread, fans concluded that Erik was, in fact, the same person who portrayed Garrett Lambert from the comedy sitcom, Community.

“I thought Erik looked and sounded familiar, and then I recognized him from Community,” one person pointed out.

“Is nobody freaking out that that was THE Garett from Community looking and sounding identical!” another said.

Erik had a recurring role on Community as a student at the fictional college throughout the show’s six-year run.

The NBC series premiered in September 2009 and ended in June 2015.

    Jeopardy! Set Secrets

Jeopardy! fans don’t see everything behind the scenes from watching on TV. These hidden set features make the show run smoothly:

Each podium has a hidden riser so that all contestants appear to be the same height.
After each clue is read, signal lights go off around the game board, indicating players can buzz in and respond.
Buzz in too early, and you’re locked out for .25 seconds.
The podiums have a small white light in the lower left corner, which tells Ken Jennings who goes next.
Contrary to popular belief, the player with control doesn’t have a buzzer advantage on the next clue.
To the game board’s left is a scoreboard so the players can see their opponents’ scores.
All contestants must bring three outfits to the studio, but only the host and returning champion change for the next episode.
There are wardrobe rules, including restrictions on busy patterns, solid white, purple (like the background), and logos.
Five episodes are taped in a single day, and sometimes more.
The categories, players (aside from the returning champion), and Final Jeopardy! for a tape day are all drawn randomly to ensure fairness.
Female contestants are asked not to wear makeup, which is applied backstage, and don’t wear mascara because of sweat.
Contestants fill out a questionnaire, and producers select five Q&A topics for the host.
Host Ken isn’t allowed to interact with the contestants until after the game.
Players can request to sit in a chair while competing without question.

Its main cast included Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, Chevy Chase, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Ken Jeong.

Jeopardy!’s new champ, Vickie, will return to the podium and vie for a second-straight win on Friday.

Before Vicki’s victory, the contestants who had multi-day wins for Season 42 were Steven, Paolo Pasco, Ian Morrison, and Jonathan Hugendubler.

Jeopardy! game ends in historical moment with no wagers from contestants as show champ leaves opponents in the dust

JEOPARDY! champ TJ Fisher has secured his second-straight win, as the game ended in a first-time instance in regular play history.

The marketing specialist from San Francisco, California, first won Thursday night’s game after answering over 30 questions correctly.

He returned on Friday to maintain his winning title, and he did considerably better than his competitors.

After earning $15,089 his first night, TJ appeared more confident heading into Day 2, taking the lead early with $3,300 by the show’s first break.

He played against Roberto Carabeo, an environmental designer from New York City, who had secured $1,600 at this point, and Ellie Baker, a lawyer originally from Louisville, Kentucky, who had pulled herself out of a hole by earning up to $400.

However, by the time the trio entered Double Jeopardy!, TJ made even further headway, raking in $8,100 compared to Roberto’s $1,200 and Ellie’s $800.

Throughout the second half of the game, TJ’s opponents struggled to catch up to the trivia whiz, although Ellie was only $13,000 behind at one point.

Roberto also struggled to keep up and landed himself in third place going into Final Jeopardy! with $800.

His and Ellie’s only chance now was for TJ to wager a considerable amount of his earnings and answer Final Jeopardy! incorrectly.

However, a never-before-occurring event happened in the regular play games, according to The Jeopardy Fan, as all three competitors wagered $0.

TJ’s safe gamble paid off, considering he didn’t answer the Final Jeopardy! clue correctly.

Roberto was the only one to provide the right answer, but his earnings still fell short of the champ, TJ.

In the end, TJ walked away with over $20,000 in winnings, a two-game winning streak, and an invitation to return on Monday to compete against two new opponents.

Meanwhile, Ellie secured second place with $10,000 in winnings versus Roberto’s $800.

Viewers were mesmerized by TJ’s skills as no one even came close to beating him the entire game.

“Wow … TJ is smart and already has superb buzzer skills,” one person wrote on X.

Wheel of Fortune’s Contestant Leaves Ryan Seacrest in Tears

Wheel of Fortune’s $1 Million Winner Earns Most Money in Show’s 42 Years, Leaving Ryan Seacrest in Tears

Wheel of Fortune host Ryan Seacrest cried tears of joy for his first-ever $1 million dollar winner Christina Derevjanik on the Sept. 30 episode, with her grand total being the most money ever given.

Ryan Seacrest finally had the chance to make someone a millionaire.

Wheel of Fortune' $1 million winner has Ryan Seacrest in tears – NBC Connecticut

On the Sept. 30 episode of Wheel of Fortune, the TV show host got to award his first ever million-dollar prize to a contestant—and it was just the fifth time ever in the series’ history that someone has scored the million.

The lucky winner was Christina Derevjanik, who left with a grand total of $1,035,155 along with other prizes including a “luxurious cabin retreat” in Montana and a trip to Tokyo—the most money ever awarded in the show’s 42-year history.

Christina had already picked up the million-dollar game piece, and when she beat out her fellow contestants to move on to the final round, she had the chance to take home the winnings. In the category “Living Things,” she won with the answer “Pack of Coyotes.”

As confetti started pouring down following the correct guess, Christina embraced Ryan in a very enthusiastic hug before going on to hug Vanna White as the speaker made the official announcement.

“I’m in tears,” Ryan said to Christina and Vanna as he held up her final piece saying “one million,” speaking to them as the crowd went wild and continuing, “You’re a millionaire!”

With his arm around her, she smiled in shock and happy tears as Ryan announced her final total.

“Congratulations,” Ryan told her. “You’re my first $1 million dollar winner.”

He then quipped, “I have to wipe a tear off my eye!”

From Stamford, Conn., Christina shared in her introduction that she loves “going out for hikes with my dog,” “running” and “sitting out by the water with a nice glass of wine.” She even shared she had run 11 half-marathons and one full marathon. But on a typical weekday evening, she can be found, “8 p.m., glass of wine, Hallmark channel.”

The last person to win $1 million in the franchise was Melissa Joan Hart on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune in 2021. Before that, Sarah Manchester last earned the grand prize in 2014, while Autumn Erhard won it in 2013 and Michelle Loewenstein in 2008.

Jeopardy! Fans Flood Social Media with Reactions to Recent Trivia Board After Last Month’s Ken Jennings Controversy

Jeopardy! fans bored by the ‘easiest board of all time’ after listing complaints

Jeopardy! fans have taken to social media to speak out about the recent trivia board following them calling out the game show last month over Ken Jennings’ call

Jeopardy! fans have called out the game show, after airing out their complaints last month, for a category in the trivia contest that they deemed not difficult enough for participating contestants.

The official Jeopardy! Instagram account recently shared a clip from the long-running series on the social media platform, showing a contestant rather than resident host Ken Jennings just reading the clue. Gordon said, “for all of you Dr. Seuss fans, before work or play, you can start your day with green eggs and hame–the green coming from Swiss chard or spinach. And from this sauce that contains fresh basil leaves as well as pine nuts.”

Answering the $800 clue correctly, the contestant said “What is pesto?” Viewers couldn’t help but point out for many of the categories were “easy” rather than baffling to the point where contestants struggled to answer.

“What are you, an @idiotsandwich? Play along with this category presented by chef @gordongram,” the post’s caption read.

    Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! fans flooded the comment section with their opinion on the category.

“That’s the easiest board of all time,” one penned under the post, as another quipped, “It’s categories like these that give me the delusion that I could be on Jeopardy!”

A second added, “finally a set of questions I could have aced!” making a nod to the seemingly easiness of the category compared to others.

Although some weren’t impressed with the clues in the category, many were at least not raging over the episode like some viewers did last month.

After one Jeopardy! episode aired in mid-September, viewers were left raging because of an “absolutely ridiculous” call that game show host Ken made when he failed to give two contestants points after a video game clue.

    Jeopardy! board

The trivia questions that sparked outrage was from the “From The Video Game Manual” category. The $1,000 clue read, “From an N64 game: ‘Recover the pirate helicopter & get to the bottom of this. You are licensed to kill.’”

Paolo Pasco, who was a contestant in the episode at the time, buzzed in and answered, “What is GoldenEye?” To which Ken replied, “Can you be more specific?” And Paolo elaborated, “JamesBond: “GoldenEye?” And despite being almost spot-on with this answer, Ken refused to give Paolo the points.

When fellow contestant Steven Olson buzzed in and answered, “What’s 007 GoldenEye?” Ken once again did not accept this answer.

One viewer wrote, disagreeing with Ken, “‘GoldenEye’ absolutely should have been accepted, and ‘007 GoldenEye’ probably should have been too. On the box art, the way the logo is stylized doesn’t clearly indicate whether the 007 is supposed to come before or after GoldenEye, and on the title screen, there’s no 007 at all; the in-game name of the game is just GoldenEye.”

They continued, “The very first page of the manual before the table of contents does say “Thank you for selecting the GOLDENEYE 007 Game Pak,” but the page that they got the quote in the clue from is titled ‘THE GOLDENEYE STORY.’”

They went on to add, “If they can accept ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ for ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ then there’s no reason not to accept GoldenEye. Ken’s comment seemed to indicate that they needed to differentiate from the movie (even though the clue very clearly indicated it was the video game), but then why do they accept ‘Wizard of Oz’ when referring to the book ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ instead of requiring that it be differentiated from the movie?”

Did The Voice’s John Legend Just Issue the Biggest Dis Since Adam Levine?

Good news for Adam Levine. The former Voice coach may finally start to live down the Season 15 gaffe that found him pleading with viewers to save one of his contestants (who had been too ill to sing) over another (who actually had performed).

The show of favoritism dogged the Maroon 5 frontman until and even after he exited stage left ahead of Season 16.

During Monday’s Season 25 Voice Semi-Finals, coach John Legend praised performance after performance, which is par for the course.

But after Team Reba McEntire standout Asher HaVon slayed Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” (listen below), the EGOT winner went what was perhaps a step too far.

After sharing that his dad had texted to declare that Asher “is The Voice,” Legend said, “Now I’m a little biased toward my team, but no matter what other factors people are voting on, I believe you’re the best vocalist in the competition.”

Technically, Legend may be absolutely right. Personally, I prefer his team’s Nathan Chester. Regardless, the show of support had to feel like a bit of a game-changing gut punch to Chester and teammate Bryan Olesen.

Whatever their coach may say during Tuesday’s Semi-Finals Results Show (8/7c on NBC) or next week’s Finals, they — and the audience whose votes he will be courting — will know that he doesn’t see them as the cream of the crop.

Oops… They Did It Again: The Voice Coaches’ Five Biggest Season 27 Flubs… So Far

If you’ve been a fan of The Voice for any length of time — heck, often even just a single episode — you know that the coaches aren’t perfect. They make mistakes. Occasionally massive ones. And in the enduring NBC sing-off’s 27th season, veterans Adam Levine and John Legend, relative newbie Michael Bublé and total newb Kelsea Ballerini are performing true to form, making decisions here and there that leave us going, “Hmm,” “Are you sure about that?” and now and then, “Oh, come on, seriously?!?”

Below you’ll find the five flubs that most flummoxed me from the Battles and Knockouts, aka the first rounds in which contestants are either advanced, saved, stolen or — gulp — eliminated. (It’s that last one that always gets the coaches in trouble.) Accompanying each of the mentioned missteps is a video of the singer in question who no way, no how should have been allowed to walk off the stage.

Well, except maybe with the winner’s trophy in hand!

I agreed with Kelsea in the Knockouts that Tinika Wyatt had slayed “Best of My Love” — but not to the point that I’d have kept her over Dan, whose rendition of Shontelle’s “Impossible” was, well, impossibly good. (Lend an ear above.)

Did anyone not facepalm when Michael kept the OK Barry Jean Fontenot in the KOs over Simone, who’d poured out her heart and broken ours on her rendition of Sara Bareilles’ Waitress ballad “She Used to Be Mine”? (Listen above.)

After the way John praised the Team Kelsea showman’s Knockouts performance, I was all ready to be grumpy for the rest of the season about him not using his Steal to save Divighn… until the EGOT winner later stole the sublime Ari Camille instead. (Watch Divighn kill Maroon 5 above.)

Ethan Eckenroad’s “I Won’t Back Down” cover wasn’t my favorite, but I can agree with all of y’all who say he’s special. Still, I was gutted when Adam dropped country boy Trevon, whose enthusiasm was matched only by his talent. (See why above.)

In a pre-taped segment, the Maroon 5 frontman jokingly delighted in the fact that he had not only been given the country superstar’s seat but his dressing room, too. “They took all the sawdust off the floor… dead raccoons.” Though Levine’s affection for Shelton is well-known, he couldn’t resist refusing to say that he missed his pal. But “I do think that I can tell you that not being with you has made me better at doing my job, because you don’t constant needle. You’re a needler,” cracked Levine, who later admitted to Carson Daly, “I do love him.”

The host then asked, “You think you’ll ever come back to the show? What about you and Blake on this show again? Will that ever happen?”

As the audience cheered, Levine replied, “Yeah. I think we should do it.” In jest, he even laid out a plan to get his frenemy to sign on the dotted line. “I’m gonna take him out and get him drunk.” Hey, it would work on us.

Jennifer Hudson is stepping in for Kelly Clarkson as a coach on the upcoming Season 29 of NBC’s The Voice following the death of Clarkson’s ex-husband Brandon Blackstock earlier this month.

It’s just a temporary replacement, though: Hudson filled in for Clarkson for one episode of rehearsals for the Battles round, Deadline reports, with Clarkson returning soon after to reclaim her big red chair.

Hudson is no stranger to The Voice: She served as a coach on Seasons 13 and 15, and has served as a mentor to the singers in other seasons as well.

Season 29, dubbed Battle of Champions, brings back winning coaches Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend for an all-new competition; it’s slated to air next spring on NBC. (Season 28, with coaches Reba McEntire, Michael Bublé, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg, airs this fall.)

It was a family affair when 19-year-old Sadie Dahl from Draper, UT, came to The Voice for her Blind Audition. She had both her mother and her grandmother along with her, which isn’t unusual, but it turned out that Grandma Linda is the biggest fan of The Voice, and also watches The Voice Australia and The Voice UK.

“She shows me new music and artists that she’s found,” Sadie said, as well as a documentary that her grandmother discovered on coach Snoop Dogg.

“The advice I would give her is to sing from her heart because the coaches turn when they feel emotion,” Grandma Linda said.

That advice paid off, and Sadie made her grandma proud when she received a four-chair turn for her rendition of “Colors” by Black Pumas.

Despite the four-chair turn, it turned out that Sadie could only pick from Snoop, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire, because Niall had used his Block to make sure that Sadie couldn’t choose Team Bublé.

“Sadie, Sadie, Sadie, 19 years old and singing like that,” Snoop said. “As I listened to your vocals, I hear so many different ranges of tone and delivery, and how you’re so professionally strong on stage. I hear some pop, I hear some soul, I hear some R&B. I hear a little bit of everything and how you can have your way with it, so if you choose me as your coach, I think we’d make great music, and I think you’d have a great career after this show.”

Then it was Niall’s turn to pitch Sadie, but first he wanted to gloat. He said, “You know what I love the most? When we all started to spin around, and I blocked Bublé. I could see his face lit up, and I was ‘Nope.’”

But then he got down to business, trying to woo Sadie to his team: “I love how you never wavered. It actually got better. Any of the artists I’ve developed while on this show, when I work with them, I try to curate a 10-track album. So when you leave this place and you walk into the door of a record label, you’re, ‘these are my performances from The Voice and this is the kind of thing I do.’ I am your guy. I promise.”

Reba was next in trying to sell herself to Sadie. She said, “Wow, you can definitely win this thing. That was mesmerizing. It’s so different what you do. So, way to go. I’d love to have you on my team. But wherever you land, I’m just very proud for The Voice that you’re on The Voice.

It was with a long face that Michael  Bublé chimed in. He said, “I’m deeply devastated and disappointed for myself. I am also as happy for you.”

Then, Michael got his revenge on Niall for blocking him by talking up Snoop as the best coach for Sadie, saying, “You can choose a mentorship from one of the most beautiful human beings who just happens to be one of the greatest, most iconic entertainers of our lifetime. I mean, Snoop Dogg is one of the greatest musicians on the planet. When I think of somebody who has changed the face of music, I think of Snoop Dogg. And then, you have Niall. He’s good, too.”

Sadie laughed and said to Niall, “You had that coming.”

Michael continued, “The Voice wins, America wins. I will cheer for you the whole time. Sadie, it is now time to pick who will be your coach.”

But Snoop had some last words, “Sadie, dare to be different. Just like you are.”

Sadie chose to go Team Snoop. Michael’s words probably didn’t hurt nor did the fact that her grandmother had shown her the documentary on his career.

Snoop was ecstatic, adding, “Sadie was a great win. I love her voice, her style, and her uniqueness. I feel she can win the show.”

Then he told Sadie, her mom, and Grandma Linda, “Y’all are not going to believe it, but before I came out here, I was listening to a song from The Spinners called ‘Sadie.’”

As for Niall, well, he was having second thoughts. He realized, “I wasted my block.”

The Voice airs Monday and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
