Kelly, 54, asked her former LIVE co-host, “You’re down to the top three. Who do you like, if you had to… I know you can’t pick and I know you don’t want to influence things, but if you had to…”

Ryan then interrupted, “Pick one of the three?”

He then joked, “Carrie Underwood,” showing his respect for the former American Idol winner.

Ryan then said, “You’ve got three different contestants… and they all want it! These contestants all want to win.”

He then said of when he announces winner, “It’s a special and lifechanging moment – for me too!”

    CARRIE BACKLASH

Ryan’s praise comes after Carrie has received harsh criticism from American Idol fans, as they have called for her firing from the ABC series.

On Monday, the Top 5 was cut to three, as Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts and Slater Nalley were chosen to compete in next week’s finale.

Jamal, 27, performed Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s hit Ain’t No Mountain High Enough from the 2000 Disney sports film Remember the Titans.

But he received “harsh” criticism from judge Carrie, as she said, “I feel like you missed such an opportunity to move around and entertain.

American Idol fans demand Carrie Underwood be ‘replaced’ next season after her ‘harsh’ and ‘rude’ critique of contestant
“We are getting close to the end here, it is time to pull out all the stops.

“And we know you have that in you. So like pull us all in not just with your voice but everything else going on.

“Put 100 percent of yourself into it. Let’s go,” she added.

As for fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, they gave him a standing ovation while Carrie remained in her seat

    CARRIED AWAY?

Fans turned to social media to slam the judge for her “harsh” critique of the contestant.

One viewer commented on Instagram, “Please be fair and balanced in your feedback. All we as the viewers ask. In the most respectful way, we come to you.”

A second slammed. “You were out of line about Jamal tonight. Everyone gets to stand still, but he has to move around!! Really?”

A third wrote, “You know your comment for Jamal was not fair. Breanna stands still the whole performance, John stands still. What was the difference. That’s why the next time he performed the crowd shut you down with cheers.

“Remember you once was in there spot.”

A fourth fired, “Thought your criticism of Jamal for not ‘moving around’ was unfair, especially when you swooned over John when he sat in a chair for an entire song.”

A fifth then demanded, “She needs to be replaced next year!”

While a sixth said, “Your so unfair can’t stand your rudeness.”

Who are the past American Idol winners?

The previous American Idol winners include:

    Kelly Clarkson (2002)

    Ruben Studdard (2003)

    Fantasia Barrino (2004)

    BEHIND-THE-SCENES DRAMA

This comes after The U.S. Sun reported Carrie wasn’t the show’s first choice to replace former judge Katy Perry.

A source told The U.S. Sun, “They spoke with a handful of other A-list artists in pop and country before landing on Carrie.

“It was not a unanimous decision,” the insider added.

The U.S. Sun also revealed that the American Idol crew thinks Carrie’s “influence” is “ruining” the show’s legacy.

The singing competition, which Carrie won, tested out its first-ever faith-based episode on Easter Sunday.

Carrie “pushed for” the faith-based episode despite there being a divide among the crew, as some staffers did not agree with the theme.

Although the three-hour special was popular among some, members of the crew felt it was “inappropriate.”

Forget who you think will win – this year’s “The Voice” finale is shaping up to be the most unpredictable and emotionally charged showdown yet! Get ready for shocking surprises, unexpected alliances, and performances that will leave you breathless.

‘The Voice’ Finale Just Got a Whole Lot More Interesting—and It’s All Thanks to a Superstar Boost

On Tuesday, May 20, the finale of The Voice Season 27 will air on NBC and will include performances from the top five finalists, but this year’s curtain call is lining up to be unforgettable. All four current judges, Adam Levine, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and John Legend, are set to take the stage, but just last week, it was announced that some major guests will also be appearing during the finale. The conclusion to season 27 will not only feature musical acts, but also some of the most beloved coaches in the history of the show.

Next week, fans will be treated to the return of Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys and Chance The Rapper, all of whom will also be performing live during the finale. In addition, the songs each legendary coach will perform have been revealed. Shelton will sing “Texas” from his latest album For Recreational Use Only, which he released this year. It will also be the first time the country singer has appeared on The Voice since leaving the show in 2023. Clarkson will be gearing up to sing her newest hit single “Where Have You Been,” which she released earlier this month. The season 1 winner of American Idol also returned during last year’s finale of The Voice where she performed “You For Christmas,” with the last show occurring in December.

Fan Favorite Coaches Returning to ‘The Voice’

Alicia Keys will appear with Amanda Reid to debut “The River/Empire State of Mind” from her Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen. Keys was a coach between seasons 12-14, but hasn’t been seen on the program since 2018. Finally, similar to Clarkson, Chance The Rapper will be performing his newest release titled “Space and Time” from his new project Star Line. The 32-year-old left The Voice after season 25, but next Tuesday’s performance will be his first appearance on the show in a full year. The Voice’s viewership has been dramatically declining since the beginning of April, but hopefully, with the star-studded lineup for the finale, season 27 will manage to finish on a strong note. Furthermore, other former coaches and surprise musical guests have been announced ahead of next week’s show, which should also have a positive impact on ratings.

More Surprise Guests to Perform During the Finale

In addition to Shelton, Clarkson, Keys and Chance The Rapper, Joe Jonas, Foreigner, James Bay with mentor Sheryl Crow and season 22 winner Bryce Leatherwood will be appearing. Bay and Crow will debut “You and Me Time” for their first joint effort together, while Jonas and Leatherwood will each perform new singles for their upcoming solo albums set to release this month. Regarding Foreigner, they will be bringing out the classics, playing iconic tunes such as “Feels like the First Time,” Juke Box Hero,” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Levine, Ballerini, Bublé and Legend will also be singing duets with their respective finalists, but the song choice for each performance has yet to be selected. Although it remains uncertain how long night two of the live finale of season 27 will be, it’s expected the program could run close to three hours due to the number of performances scheduled for the show.

Next Monday, the top 5 artists left in the competition will perform their final song, with some of the coaches’ performances expected to take place as well, starting at 8:00 p.m EST. The following night, the host of The Voice, Carson Daly, will present a recap of the acts that took center stage on Monday, which is set to last an hour long. Then, at 9:00 p.m. EST, the live finale will begin where the results will be unveiled, all special guests will perform, and the winner of season 27 will be crowned. In addition, The Voice just announced their coaching lineup for season 28, which will see some significant changes, but with familiar faces. Along with the already pre-announced Snoop Dogg and a returning Bublé, Reba McEntire and Niall Horan will be taking their rightful spot in the coaches’ chairs later this year.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8:00pm on NBC. All episodes are available to stream on Peacock.

Kelsea Ballerini Breaks Silence on Fans Upset Over ‘The Voice’ Elimination

With so many talented artists, it can be difficult for The Voice coaches to decide who to pick and eliminate. This is why John Legend, Adam Levine, Kelsea Ballerini, and Michael Bublé were so excited about the Super Save option. For Ballerini, this meant bringing back Derby singer Jaelen Johnston. He had been eliminated in favor of Iris Herrera and Alanna Lynise. While she stands by her decision, she understands why fans were disappointed that Johnston wasn’t one of her first picks.

Ballerini Has No Regrets Defending Her ‘Undeniable’ Picks

“As much as I represent country, I want to represent good music and I want to represent artists that are storytellers, and I believe Alanna and Iris to be two of the best on the show that do that,” Ballerini told Parade, defending her decision to choose them initially. “My goal as a coach was never to only support country artists, it was just to support great artists.”

“Sometimes there’s an artist that just has such a slam dunk of a performance on that stage that it’s undeniable, even if that’s not what you thought going into it, and then sometimes you really buy into the growth that you’ve seen of the artist and you believe that they can continue to show up well,” she explained about her selection. But she also recognizes that Johnston is a great artist and country singer. Now that he’s been brought back, he could be victorious.

“If Jaelen were to win, I would not be surprised at all,” Ballerini admitted. “Then everybody would be like, ‘Kelsea, we told you so.’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m a newbie here.’”

The Other Coaches Admit They Could Be Wrong About Their Season 27 Voice Picks

Legend and Levine admit they struggled as much as Ballerini when creating the Top 8. After seeing the Super Saves perform, they realized they may have made a mistake with their initial choices.

“Honestly, I was agonizing over the fact that I could only pick two, and I was like, ‘Obviously, I have three people that should be going to the Lives,’ and I knew that,” Legend said. “It was so painful not picking Olivia because she was amazing, Bryson was amazing, RENZO was amazing, and it was an agonizing decision.”

Levine agreed. “Everybody was so good and everyone had done so well that there was just no version of this that was going to make everybody happy, including myself, I don’t think, unless I could take everybody with me. So that was really where I was at,” he revealed.

‘The Voice’ Announces Big Schedule Changes

As soon as the final five contestants on season 27 of “The Voice” are whittled down to one winner on May 20, 2025, the show’s producers will leap into preparations for season 28, likely to start filming within weeks of the finale. During the last two years, NBC has filmed back-to-back seasons each summer.

NBC has already announced that season 28 will include a big coaching change, with Michael Bublé as the only coach from season 27 returning. He’ll be joined by Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Niall Horan. But there are scheduling changes in the works, too, that could be a bit challenging for fans to navigate this fall.

‘The Voice’ Season 28 Will Get Squeezed Down to Just 1 Hour Per Week by November

The schedule for “The Voice” during the fall of 2025 could throw fans for a loop as NBC tries to squeeze in NBC games and its popular sitcoms, including the second season of McEntire’s “Happy’s Place.”

According to Deadline, the two-hour season 28 premiere of “The Voice” is expected to take place on Tuesday, September 16. The night before, NBC will air the “America’s Got Talent” season finale. But after that — at least for the remainder of September — “The Voice” will follow its usual format, with two-hour shows on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The schedule starts to shift in October. NBA games are moving to NBC, which means “The Voice” will begin airing just one night a week, with two-hour shows on Mondays only. There will be no recap episodes on Tuesdays, as has been common during season 27.

Fans will get even less of “The Voice” in November, per Deadline, when those two-hour Monday night shows get squeezed down to just one-hour episodes. Meanwhile, December is currently a bit of wild card because the NBA schedule set in stone yet. Depending on how that shakes out, Deadline reported there may be some episodes of “The Voice” that air on Tuesdays that month.

‘The Voice’ Season 27 Has Struggled in the Ratings

Although season 27 of “The Voice” got off to a good start with an earlier-than-normal premiere in early February, its ratings slipped significantly, according to Collider, especially after its biggest competitor — “American Idol” on ABC — kicked off in early March.

In February and early March, “The Voice” topped Monday night ratings, Collider reported, drawing over five million people per episode during its first seven weeks on-air. But by late March, “Idol” had taken over and in early April, “The Voice” ratings had dropped by 27%.

It’s not known yet how the May 12 and 13 semifinals did in the ratings, but according to data published by TV Series Finale, the first round of “The Voice” playoffs on May 5 drew one of the lowest audiences of the season, with just 3.5 million tuning in.

He’s back! After nearly six years, Adam Levine is making his comeback to The Voice for Season 27. He’ll sit next to John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, and Michael Bublé on the coaches’ panel when he returns for the first time in ten seasons.

Levine’s return was announced in June 2024. He filmed the pre-taped episodes that fall and they’re finally airing with the February 3 premiere of Season 27. His decision to come back came as quite a shock to many viewers, as Levine was previously pretty adamant that his time on the show was done.

Scroll down for everything we know about why the Maroon 5 singer left The Voice, and, more importantly, why he decided to return.

Why did Adam Levine leave The Voice?

Levine left The Voice after the conclusion of Season 16 in May 2019. At the time, he had already signed on to coach for Season 17 but was replaced by Gwen Stefani after his exit. Levine was one of the original Voice coaches and had been with the program since Season 1 in 2011.

“We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going,” he wrote on Instagram after his departure. “After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself ‘theres some magic here. Something is definitely happening.’ It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever.”

In the rest of his post, he went on to thank NBC, his fellow coaches and colleagues, and the fans for his eight years on the show.

It wasn’t until several months later that Levine finally addressed his shocking exit. “I was ready to not be doing it anymore, I think for a little bit,” Levine admitted on Howard Stern’s radio show in October 2019. “I think that when it all kind of naturally happened, I was like, ‘Okay, it feels right.’ For better or worse, the moment in which we decided to walk away felt really good. It was the right time for me to go.”

The singer said that being a coach on The Voice was a “life-altering” experience, but pointed out that he was married with two young kids who he wanted to spend time with. “They were really little,” Levine explained. He went Behati Prinsloo in 2014. They now have three children, the third born in January 2023.

He also said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, “I do miss it, but I also don’t miss how much I had to work. I was just constantly working for many years. Very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that, but just to be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever…”

Despite Levine’s diplomatic responses, there were rumors that more was going on behind the scenes. Levine had a rough run on Seasons 14, 15, and 16 of the singing competition show, with none of his artists making it to the finals three seasons in a row.

He also faced backlash from viewers after making a controversial move in Season 15: With just 10 singers left in the competition, Levine’s final two artists, Reagan Strange and DeAndre Nico, were in danger of going home due to being in the bottom three. The three singers with the lowest amount of votes had to sing for the Instant Save, with only one moving on. Strange was sick and could not perform, but was still able to receive votes. Levine gave a passionate speech in her favor, urging voters to help her stick around another week. It rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way when he didn’t advocate as hard for Nico, who actually did perform.

In May 2019, TVLine reported that Levine had become hard to work with on the show. A source claimed that Levine didn’t want to attend a pre-taping for Season 16’s semifinals since he had no artists left in the competition. He was reportedly “difficult” at the taping, which “might have stemmed” from a recent rule change that allowed so many of his team members to be eliminated at once (as opposed to coaches having an equal amount of artists in the finals), according to the site.

He was also reportedly unenthusiastic in front of network bigwigs while attending the NBC Upfronts in 2019. “Adam had been checked out for a while,” the site’s source claimed. “But this was a new low. It was essentially the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Adam Levine’s guest spots on The Voice

In 2020, Levine did an Instagram Q&A, where one follower wrote in, “Come back to The Voice?” and he responded, “No thank you?”

Despite his apparent lack of interest, he did come back for the Season 20 finale in May 2021, where he performed with Maroon 5. In May 2023, he was onscreen during the Season 23 finale, which was a goodbye tribute to Blake Shelton in his final season. Levine also popped up to celebrate The Voice’s milestone 25th season in May 2024, just weeks before his return was announced.

Why did Adam Levine return to The Voice?

“I just felt like it was time,” Adam told E! News. “I had some time to reflect and do my thing and be with my family. I was ready to do it, then the stars aligned and here I am.”

The show’s executive producer Audrey Morrissey pinpointed the moment she felt Levine’s desire to return started taking place. The two ran into each other at Shelton’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in May 2023, she told TV Insider. “I cornered him and asked, ‘When are you gonna come back?’ she recalled. “I think that was the one that really started him thinking, ‘Maybe I will.’ It still took two years!”

While Levine admitted to E! that he “didn’t miss” the show during his hiatus, he said he “became more nostalgic about it once [he] came back.”

Adam Levine Has a Playful Message for Blake Shelton Amid His ‘The Voice’ Return

Despite the pair’s public sparring and ongoing pranks since costarring on The Voice together, everyone knows that Adam Levine and Blake Shelton are best buds. Now that Levine is back as a coach after a long absence, some fans are missing the friendly bickering that was so prevalent between the two. Luckily, Shelton has announced that he’s returning to The Voice, though not as a judge, and Levine has some choice words for his frenemy.

Adam Levine and Blake Shelton's Friendly Rivalry - EntertainmentNow

    Levine Gives Hilariously Snarky Response

When E! News asked Levine how he felt about Shelton returning to The Voice to perform for the Season 27 finale on May 20, Levine had a prickly reply ready. “Boo!” he said. “You hear me, Blake Shelton? Right now, you hear me at home? I’m not excited that you’re coming back and I don’t like you.”

Even with Shelton gone from the show, Levine has been unable to escape his playful jabs and quips. New coach Kelsea Ballerini added some of Shelton’s one-liners to her chair button for ‘backup.’

On one episode, Levine started to convince an artist that she wanted on her team to join his, and Ballerini used Shelton’s canned phrases to hilarious effect. “Adam’s a big baby,” the chair speaker blares. She presses the button again, and “Adam won’t shut up,” in Shelton’s voice rings out. The last time she pushed it, viewers heard “Adam, you say a lot of stupid stuff,” which caused fellow judge, Michael Bublé, to crack up.

He Takes a Subtle Dig at Blake Shelton’s ‘The Voice’ Finale Appearance

After leaving the show in 2019, many were surprised when the news began circulating that Levine was returning. At the time, he had said he wanted to spend more time with his family, and he felt it was time to move on. When asked how it felt to be back, he told Extra TV that he was “having even more fun than when he first started.”

“I think that I did it for so long, such a long run, that I didn’t think about it, that I can really appreciate now that I’ve taken a step back,” he continued. “It’s just been super fun, amazing.” But when asked “what’s up their sleeves,” concerning Shelton returning for the finale, he returns to form.

“I feel like the show is doing so well, you know? Like, why they would dumb it down — I don’t know why they would have him on because it’s so elevated right now. And I feel like he just kind of brings it, drags it down into the mud,” he deadpanned.

The Voice is coming back for Season 28 in fall 2025, and your favorite Coaches are returning, too. The upcoming season will feature a mix of Coaches from previous lineups, so no matter what happens, the Artists will be in good hands. Here’s the lineup of Coaches for The Voice Season 28:

Michael Bublé Coaches for a third time

After winning Season 26, the Canadian crooner returned for Season 27 and will remain in his red chair for Season 28. He’s clearly quite at home on The Voice, gushing about his Taylor Swift dance parties with his daughters and even vacationing with former Coach Adam Levine. Hear the sweet advice he gave Kelsea Ballerini when she prank called him with a (fake) issue about the show.

Reba McEntire is back at The Voice

Reba McEntire won The Voice right out of the gate, coasting to a victory in Season 25. After Season 26, she handed the country baton to Kelsea Ballerini for Season 27, but she’s taking it back for Season 28. She’s actually had quite a long history on The Voice, as a Battle Advisor all the way back in Season 1 and a Mega Mentor on Season 23.

Niall Horan is back in a red chair, too

Horan won Season 23 with the incredible Gina Miles and coached most of Season 24 before he had to head out of town for his world tour. Now that he’s no longer on the road, Horan is back on The Voice!

Snoop Dogg rounds out the lineup

After his Season 26 debut as a Coach, Snoop took a hiatus during Season 27 but shared that he was interested in potentially returning to The Voice. “It’s been a great experience for me,” Snoop told Host Carson Daly. “I didn’t know what I was signing on to, but I do know it feels like I could come back and do it again.”

Snoop spoke about joining The Voice‘s lineup of Coach icons during his May 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “Well, if you know anything about me, you know I love all forms of music,” Snoop told Jimmy Fallon. “So this is a great opportunity for me to show that I really understand music and to be a real Coach. And to really give direction to some of these Artists that could be, you know, today’s next big thing.”

Adam Levine is back on The Voice

Remember, you’re not just seeing a competition between the Artists. The Coaches want the win, too, especially returning OG Coach Adam Levine, who told NBC Insider he’s “really happy” to be back after taking a break in 2019.

“The only way to sum it up is that just energetically…the opportunity came at the right moment and I was really ready, and we started talking about it and one thing led to another and here I am. It was that simple,” Levine told NBC Insider about his return. “It didn’t involve too much deliberation or overthinking. I kind of just felt ready. I was really happy to come back and experience it again with these three wonderful people. It was time.”

Give me the PopJazzers Fantasy Football championship,” Bublé told the sports commentator. If that’s how he feels about a competition he’s not even coaching in real life, can you imagine his dedication to Team Bublé?

Coaches John Legend, Adam Levine, Kelsea Ballerini and Michael Bublé also reveal the thinking behind their ‘Super Save’ uses on the NBC singing series.

Going into the Live Shows for Season 27 of The Voice, coaches John LegendAdam LevineKelsea Ballerini and Michael Bublé each had two artists they’d selected to represent their teams.

Adam had Kolby Cordell and Lucia Flores-Wiseman, Kelsea selected Iris Herrera and Alanna Lynise, Michael chose Adam David and Jadyn Cree, while John went with Bryson Battle and RENZO to create the Top 8. But then they got the exciting news about the Super Save and they each got to bring back one eliminated team member in this season’s twist.

Adam saved Conor James, Kelsea saved Jaelen Johnson, Michael saved Kaiya Hamilton and John saved Olivia Kuper Harris.

And after watching the Super Saves rise to the occasion, the coaches had to admit that they may not have been correct in their initial choices. Meaning, one of the Super Save contestants could win Season 27 of The Voice.

“I would not be surprised,” John told Parade. “A lot of times that happens. People that either get stolen or saved go on to do better than the people that were originally picked, so we never know.”

And Adam agreed, saying, “Not at all. I mean, honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else’s save [won]. It’s one of those wacky things that at this point, this late in the game, it’s impossible to tell.”

If Jaelen were to win, Kelsea said, “I would not be surprised at all. Then everybody would be like, ‘Kelsea, we told you so.’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m a newbie here.’”

As to why Kelsea didn’t pick Jaelen in the first place, she explained that it was an in-the-moment decision, “Sometimes there’s an artist that just has such a slam dunk of a performance on that stage that it’s undeniable, even if that’s not what you thought going into it, and then sometimes you really buy into the growth that you’ve seen of the artist and you believe that they can continue to show up well.”

So that was the case in her selection of Iris and Alanna, but she does admit that a lot of people were upset with her for not selecting Jaelen.

“As much as I represent country, I want to represent good music and I want to represent artists that are storytellers, and I believe Alanna and Iris to be two of the best on the show that do that,” she continued. “My goal as a coach was never to only support country artists, it was just to support great artists. However, Jaelen is both.”

As for why John brought back Olivia, he said, “Honestly, I was agonizing over the fact that I could only pick two, and I was like, ‘Obviously, I have three people that should be going to the Lives,’ and I knew that. It was so painful not picking Olivia because she was amazing, Bryson was amazing, RENZO was amazing, and it was an agonizing decision.”

Adam says that selecting two of his five team members to head into the Lives was an impossible task, so he based his decision solely on the performances at face value that night.

“Everybody was so good and everyone had done so well that there was just no version of this that was going to make everybody happy, including myself, I don’t think, unless I could take everybody with me. So that was really where I was at.”

The decision to bring Conor back over Britton or Ethan was a feeling. Adam said, “Something about Conor, I felt like he had a great performance that night and he did something really different, which I always like to reward. It was a really fearless choice, and I loved that about it, and so I just wanted to stay with that in that moment.”

The reigning champion Coach is none other than Michael Bublé, who won his very first season in a red chair. And the experience taught him a very important lesson. “Always to be empathetic,” the singer told NBC Insider. “Be empathetic and warm and to always realize that [the Artists are] a mirror image of you and where you’ve been and where you’ve come [from].”

He also shared some insight that should comfort anyone whose favorite Artist didn’t make the Top 5: There are no losers on The Voice. “My favorite part about it,” he said, “was when I had to let people go for the first time, I was upset about it. Until I realized that their lives had changed. Until I realized that their careers had started. They started to create a business that could go on.”

Any amount of time on the show, he said, gives a singer a boost. “Their socials have grown. I didn’t realize at the time because I had thought of this as an end-goal thing,” Bublé reflected. He said that his Artists’ lives “changed already” by the time he let them go “just from being on this massive television program that has seven to 11 million people watching all over the planet.”

In fact, Bublé says that there’s simply no downside to being a Voice Artist or Coach. “There was literally not one negative part,” he added. “This is about the Artists, for the Artists. It’s not about us. We love being here. We love being part of the process. There’s a reason why we’ve come and gone, and the people in the red seats change, but the show stays successful. It’s because they’ve made sure that they are so protective of the Artists. And that’s the legacy of the show.”
