‘The Voice Kids’ Star Tragically Dies At 17

A contestant who appeared on The Voice Kids, a spin-off of The Voice, passed away at the age of 17. News of the star’s death had been shared on social media. Following this, fans and people who knew the contestant have shared their condolences.

The Contestant Appeared On The Voice Kids At The Age Of 12

In the United States, viewers have watched The Voice since 2011 and watched coaches like Adam Levine, John Legend, Blake Shelton, and Michael Bublé over the years. However, the series originated with a Dutch series, The Voice of Holland, which itself has spawned a number of international versions and spin-offs.

The Voice Kids is a spin-off of The Voice franchise which focuses on child contestants. This version of the series appears in many countries. In the United States, for example, a Spanish-language version of the series, La Voz Kids, aired on Telemundo from 2013 to 2016.

News has come out that Karen Silva, a contestant from the Brazilian version of the series, The Voice Kids, has passed away. She had appeared on the show in 2020 at the age of 12. During her time on the show, she advanced to the semi-finals.

Silva passed away after enduring a hemorrhagic stroke. The singing star was 17 at the time of her death.

The news of Silva’s passing was shared this past Thursday on her official Instagram page. According to a translation, she had been hospitalized at São João Batista Hospital, in Volta Redonda. The announcement was shared with “deep sadness.”

“Karen enchanted Brazil with her powerful voice and striking presence even as a child, when she participated in The Voice Kids in 2020. Since then, she has continued to follow a luminous path, combining talent, charisma and representation in every step.”

Silva’s First Vocal Coach Also Talked About Her Singing Talents

“More than a promising artist, Karen was a symbol of empowerment, especially for black girls who found in her inspiration and strength to dream. Her music, her message and her joy leave deep marks on everyone who knew her and followed her journey.”

“In this moment of immense pain, we stand in solidarity with her parents, Manoella and Fernando, with friends, family and fans. May the memory of her light continue to guide us.”

From that day on, Karen never stopped singing and captivating people.”

Taking to social media, a few fans have shared their condolences following the news. Some comments included:

“Such sad news, I wish the comfort of the Father to all the family and friends.”

‘The Voice’ Fans Frustrated With Voting, Want Change Now

When it comes to competition series, a lot of responsibility is placed on the judges. However, fans often forget that they themselves are often the ones determining the winner through their votes. That said, there are times when fans think changes need to be made in the way their favorite competition shows tally their votes. Recently, The Voice has gotten some flak for a change to its own format.

Fans Have Already Seen A Few Changes To The Voice‘s Format Over The Years

The Voice is an American adaptation of the original Dutch series, The Voice of Holland. Its U.S. counterpart premiered back in 2011 on NBC.

In a twist on the typical competition series “judges,” celebrity coaches are brought onto the show to critique the contestants and form their own teams. As with many competition series, public voting determines who ends up the season’s winner.
The Voice YouTube‘The Voice’ – YouTube
As noted by NJ.com, viewers are only allowed to vote as the competition reaches eight contestants. This has been the case since Season 26. Prior to this, voting took place much sooner, when the contestants were in the Top 12 or 13.

As the publication mused, “Not only does the new format give fans fewer opportunities to weigh in, it also leads to some pretty dramatic eliminations.” For instance, through the Playoffs round, coaches must cut down on the contestants. This means the lineup goes from Top 20 to Top 8 within a span of only two episodes.

On social media, fans have been sharing a similar sentiment. While watching a video of contestant Conor James on YouTube, one fan wrote, “I don’t like how they go from top 20 to top 8. Bring back top 12, top 10, top 8, top 5 & Finale.”

Another fan shared, “Agreed. Cutting each [team] down from 5 to 2 [contestants] is brutal. They should have saves or steals available in the playoffs.” A third fan also admitted, “I hate it. It gives such little time for the live rounds and barely allows the audience to get involved in the process.”

Some Fans Suggested Other Ways The Voice Could Use To Improve Its Format

This is a sentiment The Voice fans have shared throughout social media. Another fan recently shared, “They do change the format fairly regularly. This season I am especially disappointed because so many great singers went home before the live shows.”

The fan then asked for suggestions and other commenters were happy to oblige. One fan shared a list of possible changes, from “Cut the sob stories” to “Let Canadians vote.” However, they also shared that, “Slow down the amount of eliminations. It’s such a drastic cut in such a short time. It’s hard to get connected to artists when they’re gone so quickly.”

Other fans shared their own thoughts on the issue. A few agreed the eliminations happened all too suddenly. Some also suggested other ideas to change up the voting. These comments included:

“And to make it worse, eliminating more than one person and go from 8 to 5? It just seems random.”
“What’s the difference between the battles and the knockouts? Almost nothing. Find different ways to eliminate if you aren’t going to do live shows.”
“The first immediate fix that jumps to mind is instead of having the top 8, have a top 12 (3 per team) as it gives extra opportunities to great artists. This does require extending the lives by a week and maybe cutting them marginally like 3 week one, 3 for week 2, and have a 6 person finale.”
“I agree, I think they should format the lives more like American Idol where only one person goes home each week.”

‘The Voice’ Kelsea Ballerini Gets Blasted For Not Being Loyal

The Voice coach Kelsea Ballerini has been blasted for not being loyal. Yet, who is coming for her, and why do they feel this way? Furthermore, has Kelsea clapped back, or is she choosing to stay silent? Keep reading for further details.

Kelsea Ballerini Gets Blasted For Not Being Loyal

The current season of The Voice saw the return of OG coach Adam Levine, which was a huge thrill. He has been gone for several years, and after losing Blake Shelton, it was refreshing to have him back. The hit reality singing competition also welcomed new coach, country superstar and model, Kelsea Ballerini. She has been received very well by viewers of the show, and appears to be having a great time in her first season. Yet, some viewers do not believe that Kelsea has been loyal, which is a problem. So, why do they feel this way, and is it valid?
    Kelsea Ballerini-YouTubeKelsea Ballerini-YouTube
A fan stated that Kelsea seriously dropped the ball when she let Jaelan Johnston go home. Moreover, they felt he was the whole package and there was not a thing wrong with him to warrant his exit:

Kelsea not picking jaelen is a MAJOR miss. One of the only country artists on the whole show, the talent, the range, the storytelling, last I checked the show was called the VOICE not The Potential.

The fact that Kelsea is the only country performer on the panel and that she betrayed her own genre was striking. However, it is never an easy decision to eliminate or say goodbye to someone with insane talent. So many of the performers could win, but in the end, it is a competition. Finally, Kelsea sent Jaelan home, but kept Iris Herrera and Alanna Lynise.

From the beginning, The Voice viewers loved Jaelan and believed he would win the whole thing:

Jaelen Johnston has a rich and smooth voice that the deepness is mesmerizing! 🙌❤️👏
    Easily the best!! 🔥
Hands down amazing! IMO Jaelyn is going all the way!

    How Could She?

Fans of The Voice could not understand how Kelsea Ballerini could send Jaelan Johnston home. Granted, his talent has been seen, and now he won’t be beholden to a show contract. Regardless, he was so beloved, not just having an incredible voice but being handsome, to boot. Therefore, this felt very disloyal that Kelsea would abandon one of her own:

I’m not a fan of country music.. but was rooting for the talented small town Derby boy.
Jaelen had me bawling in the playoffs.
This was a total shock! He’s a winner in my eyes. Hopefully someone will appreciate his talent and promote him. I know I sure want to hear more!
Jalen you are amazing and you should have been picked! We will continue to follow you! Please keep singing. You are amazing!!
Kelsea broke our hearts 😭💔 cannot believe she didn’t take him to the lives 😭.

Of course, some viewers felt that Kelsea was very smart and did choose the better of the three. However, there was still so much disappointment in this elimination.

Were you bummed that Kelsea did not pick Jaelan or did you ultimately understand why she chose who she did? Let us know and watch The Voice on NBC.

‘The Voice’ Fans Diss Adam Levine, Why Is He Back?

    Adam Levine - YouTube

Adam Levine recently made his return to The Voice as a coach. However, some of the Maroon 5 crooner’s maneuvers on the show have gotten fans questioning things. Some are even questioning just why he returned to the competition series.

Adam Levine Has Returned To The Voice As Part Of Seasons 27

For many Levine rose to fame as a member of the pop rock band Maroon 5. In the 2010s, he became known to audiences as one of the original coaches on The Voice. Winners from various seasons, including the first, were from his team.

However Levine would find himself leaving the show in 2019, as the decade drew to an end. however, Levine would soon return to the show in 2025 as part of season 27. This season sees him share hosting duties with John Legend, Michael Bublé, and Kelsea Ballerini.
Adam Levine - YouTubeAdam Levine – YouTube
Ahead of the season, Levine shared his excitement about returning to the show with People. At the time, he revealed, “I honestly feel like the stars aligned. It was one of those moments where we started talking about it and it felt right… and it hadn’t felt right until now.”

Levine admitted, “Doing it for so long, so consistently, for almost eight or nine years of my life, you can definitely start to get burnt. I did it for this really long period of time so I started to feel like I was kind of getting away from things that matter to me the most, like making music and playing music.” He also shared, “I got lucky because I got these guys,” in reference to the season’s other three coaches.

While many fans were also excited to see him return, other fans have been questioning his plans to win since his return to the show. As one fan shared on social media, “Adam sold…”

Some Fans Suspect That Levine Could Be Planning A Surprise Twist

The fan continued, “I genuinely think Lucia + Kolby was strategically one of worst combos he could’ve saved. Lucia is, in my opinion, an absolutely phenomenal singer but The Voice audience is simply way too 50/50 about her so I doubt she would make it far once voting starts. Kolby, while his performance was good, I feel like he was definitely outperformed by all of Adam’s other artists.”

“Britton going home was I think the biggest mistake…. I was expecting at least top 3 for him but hopefully the “twist” can bring him back!”

Other fans also shared their thoughts about Levine returning to the show. Quite a few tried to explain Levine’s reasons, including him having some surprise up his sleeve. Some comments included:

“Kolby gives great performance but voting wise I am confident he will be eliminated right away.”
“Just another steal hopefully. Adam should not get Britton back.”
“Adam had the chance to win with his team, and he chose the two contestants that America is lukewarm about. I think John’s team has the best chance to win now. Or maybe Michael again.”
“Adam is giving me the energy of ‘I don’t actually want to win, I’m just back to promote my new single/album.’”
“The surprise twist could be picking from all the remaining contestants and Adam finally gets Jaeden after whining about being blocked from getting him in the blinds. I’m just spitballing here, but that could be fun.”
“I think the coaches should pick by preference. In my opinion it would have been VERY unfair to Kolby if Adam preferred his performance, but had picked Britton because he has more fans and chance to win.”

John Legend & Chrissy Teigen’s Son Wren Is “a-OK” After Leg Injury (DETAILS)

The DONDI Season 2 banker gives a much-needed update.

Fans can officially exhale: John Legend’s youngest son is “a-OK!”

Last week, Chrissy Teigen caused a stir on social media when she shared photos of their son, Wren — who is nearly two years old — wearing a walking boot on his right leg. Thankfully, Teigen gave fans a much-needed update on the little man in a May 2 Instagram post.

“Wren is a-ok, just a little boot because he is having trouble putting all his weight on this leg!” Teigen captioned. “Not a terrible break thank the lord! They heal so fast right now 🤍🥰.”

No cause for alarm; the youngest man in the Legend household is just recovering from a minor leg injury. In the accompanying video Teigen shared, he can be seen playing with a cactus toy in the sunshine without seeming encumbered by the awkward boot whatsoever. The little guy is definitely on the road to recovery.

The Deal or No Deal Island Season 2 Banker even shared an adorable video of Wren running around with his 2-year-old sister Esti. Before fans know it, Wren will be healthy enough to climb up on his dad’s Coach Chair on The Voice set once again.

Chrissy Teigen opens up about her oldest son’s Type 1 diabetes diagnosis

This isn’t the first time Teigen has updated fans on the health of one of her four kids.

Recently, Teigen spoke about their oldest son, Miles, and his 2024 diabetes Type 1 diagnosis. Teigen and Legend have found that their parenting skills are working overtime when guiding Miles through all of the “chaos” — especially when convincing him (who Teigen calls her “little warrior”) to take his daily insulin shots — and she openly talked about their family journey in an April PEOPLE interview.

“You try everything: tokens, bribery, iPad time,” Teigen confessed. “You do everything you can to see what makes him comfortable,” she says, growing emotional. “The first three months were really, really tough for us as a family because your child is experiencing pain.”

Teigen and her husband are guiding Miles through it all, which has its fair share of ups and downs — something we’re sure many families can relate to.

“One day you’re like, ‘He did it!’ And you’re so excited it’s all looking up,” she explained. “Then all of a sudden the next day is so difficult again. I’ve always said this about having kids in general, and it fits in with this too: When things are going so great, you can always count on it to turn. And when things are really rough, things are going to get better.”

Last Man Standing and Home Improvement actor Tim Allen is gearing up to lead an all-new ABC comedy as the network has ordered a pilot for a multi-camera sitcom.

The pilot tentatively titled Shifting Gears comes from Duncanville cocreators Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Sully, yubi who executive produced Last Man Standing with Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina, according to Deadline. Written by the Scullys, the series would center around Allen’s character Matt, described as a stubborn widower who owns a classic car shop.

When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration will begin though. As mentioned above, this would be Allen’s latest team-up with the Scullys, after he led the comedy Last Man Standing for nine seasons.

Last Man Standing first began in 2011, airing for six seasons on ABC until 2017 when it was ultimately canceled. The show found new life on Fox, where it aired Seasons 7 through 9.

Shifting Gears would mark Allen’s return to ABC for the first time in almost 10 years. He previously led Home Improvement on the network as well, with that comedy airing for eight seasons between 1991 and 1999.

Currently, Allen stars in Disney+‘s sequel series The Santa Clauses, which is a follow-up to his Santa Clause film franchise. Could this new series impact The Santa Clauses?  The show has already aired two seasons on the streamer, but word on a third has yet to be revealed as fans await a renewal.

While viewers will have to wait and see how things play out, this is the first pilot order for ABC this season. Stay tuned for potential updates around the pilot as we await a possible series order for the comedy. And let us know if you’d tune in for Shifting Gears if it’s ordered by ABC in the comments section, below.

Shifting Gears Finale’s Strangest Callback Hints At A Major Change In Season 2

Riley (Kat Dennings) and Gabriel/Gabe (Seann William Scott) sitting together on a couch in Shifting Gears season 1, episode 10.

Warning: SPOILERS for Shifting Gears episode 10.The pilot season of Shifting Gears has come to an end, but one moment in the finale implies the sitcom may be changing its trajectory for the better. The ABC sitcom follows Tim Allen as Matt Parker, widower and owner of an auto restoration shop run by the affable Gabriel/Gabe (Seann William Scott), witty Stitch (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell), and underdeveloped but present Frankie (Cynthia Quiles). The inciting incident of the comedy comes when Matt’s daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), suddenly moves home with her children, Carter (Maxwell Simkins) and Georgia (Barrett Margolis), to escape a failing marriage.

Though the premise wasn’t anything groundbreaking, Shifting Gears garnered impressive viewership off the bat, yubi due in no small part to Allen’s leading role. After 10 episodes, Shifting Gears season 1 wrapped up with a soft conclusion and many purposefully unresolved storylines. While Shifting Gears season 2 has still yet to be officially confirmed by ABC, it’s difficult to imagine that the network won’t renew the comedy given the substantial ratings it’s pulled in since January. The ending of Shifting Gears season 1 left much up in the air, but one quick scene could have subtle implications for the sitcom’s future.

Seann William Scott’s “Dude, Where’s My Car?” Reference In Shifting Gears Episode 10 Explained

    A Single But Significant Line

Gabriel (Seann William Scott) and Riley (Kat Dennings) in Shifting Gears

While Tim Allen may have been the headliner, one character has been a scene-stealer in Shifting Gears since the pilot: Gabe. From his endearing naivety to reliable comic relief, Gabe is undeniably one of Shifting Gears’ best side characters thanks to the work of Seann William Scott. The Shifting Gears season finale even references one of Scott’s most iconic roles when Riley walks into the auto shop, looks at Gabe, and asks: “Dude, where’s my car?” Scott starred in a film of the same name alongside Ashton Kutcher, and it remains one of the most memorable titles in Scott’s filmography.

The absurd mix of science fiction and comedy earned Dude, Where’s My Car? poor critical reception, but the film garnered a cult following that persists decades after its initial release.

Shifting Gears made many not-so-subtle callbacks to Allen’s past roles throughout the pilot season, even setting up a Tim Allen shared universe in Shifting Gears set designs and guest stars. However, Riley’s on-the-nose reference to one of Scott’s biggest roles is a blissful departure from Shifting Gears’ Tim Allen tunnel vision. The callback didn’t require any extra meandering to draw attention to it, just a line from Riley and a quick reaction shot from Gabe. The scene then continued without delay, but the quick wink to Scott could indicate a new and necessary direction for Shifting Gears season 2.

Shifting Gears Season 1 Finale’s Non-Tim Allen Reference Hints At Its Season 2 Story Approach

The Sitcom Is Broadening Its Scope

While ABC marketing Shifting Gears as a Tim Allen sitcom was undeniably the most logical move, the comedy needs to expand its horizons if it wants long-term success. There are many talented actors in the Shifting Gears cast of characters, and the Dude, Where’s My Car? reference indicates the sitcom realizes this as well. The plot can’t stray too far from the Parker family, but it doesn’t have to in order to celebrate its ensemble. In fact, exploring individual characters would inevitably lead back to Matt, given he’s connected to everyone as a father, grandfather, boss, or neighbor.

Seann William Scott is only one member of the Shifting Gears cast with iconic past roles that can be playfully worked into the script. Kat Dennings is recognizable to many as Max from 2 Broke Girls, Daryl Mitchell and Jenna Elfman (Eve) both worked on Fear the Walking Dead, and even Maxwell Simkins is widely remembered as Zane from Bizaardvark. While Jenna Elfman’s character in Shifting Gears hasn’t been around long enough to necessarily warrant a callback, it’s reassuring to know the sitcom has at least opened the door to acknowledging its full cast.

Beyond callbacks and inside jokes, the entire Shifting Gears cast deserves more screen time in general. Matt’s character in Shifting Gears doesn’t have to be sidelined, but letting others shine will help the sitcom in the long run. There are only so many iterations of Riley and Matt clashing heads that Shifting Gears can air before it becomes exhausting. Frankie, Stitch, and Gabe could get into a fight, leading to an episode where the auto shop can’t function. Georgia and Carter could have a sibling squabble, leaving Matt and Riley to defuse the situation. Inevitably, some much-needed originality would ensue.

    Tim Allen in Shifting Gears

Admittedly, the sitcom has already vastly improved from the early reviews of Shifting Gears that seemed to spell doom for Tim Allen’s return to network television. Certain episodes of Shifting Gears season 1 did focus on other characters— albeit only partially— and were irrefutably better because of it. Of course, there’s still room to improve and make Shifting Gears the fun family comedy it has the potential to be. Involving its diverse cast more, even with something as small as a one-liner reference, is the first step to Shifting Gears embracing its ensemble and setting season 2 up for success.

Reba McEntire is returning to television with a brand-new sitcom pilot in 2024! The country singer is reuniting with Reba executive producers Kevin Abbott, Michael Hanel, and Mindy Schultheis for the currently untitled pilot on NBC.

In the new show, Reba and her half-sister, who she didn’t know about, inherit their father’s restaurant. Reba is not happy to share the business with her new sibling. At the moment, it is unclear which actors and actresses will join McEntire for the pilot.

The Reba-led show marks the first official pilot order for the 2024 season, a late start due to WGA and SAG strikes. Not only is Reba working with NBC for her new pilot, she’s also returning for her second season as a coach on The Voice Season 25 this year alongside John Legend, Chance the Rapper, and Dan + Shay.

Since Reba ended in 2007 after 6 seasons, the country superstar has been cast in several other TV shows and movies including Young SheldonBig Sky: Deadly Trails, and Reba McEntire’s The Hammer, and Malibu Country.

Though her new pilot is not a reboot of the hit sitcom Reba, she’s expressed interest in a Reba reboot for years. “We’ve been trying hard to do a reboot of the Reba show. I really want to work with the people that I got to work with during that six and a half years … We wanted to get back together like a reunion and have fun, so hopefully that will happen one day,” Reba said on The Bobby Bones Show in 2022. Though an official reboot doesn’t seem to be in the cards, McEntire has reunited with Reba cast member Melissa Peterman on several other projects.

The two real life best friends previously starred in Reba together, and have also both appeared on Young Sheldon, although they have yet to share a scene.

Rex Linn, Reba’s real boyfriend and who has also appeared in Young Sheldon, also stars in the new movie.

In a new interview, Reba revealed that there are plans for the movie to develop into a franchise.

“You know, it could have been a limited series. It could be a series. It could be movies, because Kim [her character] does have so many great stories to tell,” she shared. “Melissa said several times, ‘Oh, my gosh, we could do this again.’”

Here’s a summary: Kim Wheeler is an outspoken, firecracker lawyer who is appointed Judge of the 5th District of Nevada and is one of the few traveling judges left in America. After the reigning judge passes away under suspicious circumstances, Kim finds herself covering a circuit that stretches between Las Vegas and Reno — a rugged, often desolate area where anything and everything can happen.

With gavel in hand, she lays down the law with a no-nonsense brand of justice, that quickly earns her the nickname “The Hammer.” As the investigation of the former judge’s death heats up, Kim’s sister Kris (Peterman), who runs the local brothel, suddenly becomes the prime suspect, and Kim must work even harder to make certain the appropriate justice is served.

Kay Shioma Metchie will also star in the movie, premiering TONIGHT, January 7, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.

Reba McEntire, 70, makes ‘Voice’ debut, makes history as show’s oldest and most seasoned coach

The country queen, Blake Shelton’s long-hyped replacement, finally ascended to her red throne on the Season 24 premiere.

May 2023 marked the end of a Voice era, when the series’ most popular coach, Blake Shelton, finally exited the show after 23 consecutive seasons (nine of which he won). Actually, the instant that Blake announced his Voice retirement, way back in October 2022 — and then shamelessly milked his long goodbye for much of Seasons 22 and 23 — speculation began running rampant regarding which A-lister, presumably from Nashville, could possibly fill his big boots (or his big spinning chair). Eventually, country mega-star (and last season’s Mega-Mentor) Reba McEntire was cast as Blake’s replacement — and on Monday’s The Voice Season 24 premiere, the redhead finally, officially ascended to her red throne.

Reba’s addition to the rotating (no pun intended) Voice cast was exciting for many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that at age 70, she made history as the series’ oldest and most experienced coach. After so many early seasons when The Voice was dominated by alpha males Adam Levine and Blake’s bromance (it took until Season 11 for the show even have more than one female coach on the panel at the same time), and more recent seasons featuring Gen Z/millennial-baiting castings like Ariana Grande, Chance the Rapper, Camila Cabello, Nick Jonas, Miley Cyrus and even reigning champ Niall Horan, to see a talent-show judge who’s been in the business since before even Star Search was on the air was refreshing indeed.

Reba received a welcome fit for a country queen, arriving to Monday’s premiere via horseback like some particularly memorable Bachelor contestant, ceremonially cutting the satin ribbon on her chair with a giant pair of Edward Scissorhands-style shears and flaunting a rhinestone-cowgirl tiara and matching scepter throughout most of the two-hour episode. Niall — who joined Reba on the panel alongside returning on/off coaches John Legend and Blake’s other half, Gwen Stefani — kept calling himself “The King of The Voice” due to his recent victory, but it was obvious pretty early on in this premiere that he’d already been dethroned. At one point in the show, Reba even sat in Niall’s throne, on his lap, to establish her dominance.

All of Reba’s new rivals did their best to stay in the game — and, to their credit, they did manage to lure some of Monday’s singers away from Reba. Gwen dropped Blake’s name so often, that ought to be Season 24’s new drinking game. Niall invoked Blake constantly as well, even playing various pre-recorded soundbites of Blake — who’d “passed the torch” to him last season — singing his praises. All three coaches offered snazzy recruitment incentives, too: a leather baseball jacket for Team Legend members, a checkered L.A.M.B. hoodie for Team Gwen, a colorful happy-face sweatshirt for Team Niall. But all Reba had to do was offer a less lasting prize, tater tots (yes, tater tots), to tempt contestants.

I will say, based on Monday’s premiere, other than that stunt when she practically literally knocked Niall out of his own chair, Reba doesn’t play nearly as dirty as her predecessor, Blake. That’s because she likely won’t have to. She can leave the shady gameplay to Blake’s successor, Niall, who explained Monday, “Blake taught me you do absolutely anything to get a team member.”

It’s going to be an interesting season. Here’s what went down Monday:

    Jordan Rainer, 33: “Fancy”

Of course the first contestant of the season was a sassy female country singer — doing a Reba-popularized classic, yet. Jordan said the Bobbie Gentry story-song was “written by a strong woman, made famous by a strong woman, and it represents lyrically what women do to survive.. … I feel that song in every bone in my body.” And Jordan’s bold personality (she explained that she wears Woman-in-Black/Hamburglar outlaw attire “because it bothers my mother”) and snappy, conversational singing style made her clear Team Reba material.

Who turned? All four coaches, three of which never stood a chance. Niall declared that he wants to win this season with “a real, real deep country singer”— but the King of The Voice might never achieve that goal as long as the Queen of Country is around.

    Result: Team Reba, of course.

    Joslynn Rose, 16: “Arcade”

Joslynn had a dulcet indie voice reminiscent of last season’s winner, Team Niall songstress Gina Miles — but she could really belt as well. She was impressively, authentically emotive for someone so young. Reba called Joslynn an “old soul.” Gwen called her “dynamic and stylistic.” And Niall (who made a point to say, “I was 16 when I came on a show like this!” — that’s another potential Season 24 drinking game) called Joslynn’s Duncan Laurence cover a “goosebump moment.”

Who turned? Reba, Gwen and Niall.

Result: Team Gwen. I think Joslynn would’ve been a great fit for Niall, but maybe her decision came down to preferring Team Gwen’s more fashion-forward keepsake sweatshirt over Team Niall’s, which looked like it was purchased at Aahs! or Spencer’s Gifts.

Deejay Young, 33: “This Woman’s Work”

This Hamilton touring cast member was, unsurprisingly, a true showman — Reba observed, “This ain’t your first rodeo!” Deejay possessed an effortless falsetto that Niall called “undeniably insane,” and after he elegantly crooned the Maxwell version of Kate Bush’s classic weeper, John praised his “beautiful ability to combine the feminine and masculine in one song.”

Who turned? John, Reba and Gwen. Niall later expressed regret that he’d refrained.

Result: Team Legend. No shock there — Deejay said John’s Get Lifted album literally changed his life.

Sophia Hoffman, 18: “Tell Me You Love Me”

Sophia auditioned last season and turned no chairs. But she was a changed woman this season, attacking Demi Lovato’s advanced-level rock ballad like a seasoned pro. She came across like a baby Taylor Dayne, a classic throwback diva, while Niall detected some “J.Hud grit” in her power vocals. “I am thrilled to death you came back,” Reba told Sophia. Reba then threw her new rival under the bus by pointing out that Niall — the only returning coach from last season — had failed to hit his button for Sophia the first time around.

    Who turned? Reba and Niall.

Result: Team Niall. I guess we can’t rule out Niall just yet.

Jackson Snelling, 21: “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away”

Jackson emotionally dedicated this Justin Moore ballad to his late father and showcased an extremely recordable classic-country voice that Reba described as “honest” and “rich, like great chocolate.” When Jackson proudly announced onstage that he has high-functioning autism and music has been a big help to him in life, Reba told him, “I am so proud to be in the country music business, and so proud that you’re representing us.”

    Who turned? Gwen and Reba.

Result: Team Reba. Like Niall, Gwen really wants a country artist this season, so of course she unashamedly bragged that she’s had two No. 1 country hits with her husband. Reba called Gwen out on her constant namedropping (“Oh, you’re pulling that card now? Is that fair?”), and readily pointed out that she’s had “more than two” country No. 1’s herself (24, to be exact). To quote Reba: “Next!”

    Alexa Wildish, 34: “Songbird”

In her pre-performance package, Alexa was marketed as a van-living, kooky free spirit, jumping and high-kicking with an electric guitar in a red Meg White jumpsuit. So, I expected her to be a rocker. I did not expect this lovely, plaintive Fleetwood Mac cover, which Niall even declared would make the late Christine McVie proud. Both Niall and Reba noted a few pitch issues, but they could tell that was because Alexa was overcome with emotion (a single glistening tear actually leaked from her eye during her performance). “I got a really peaceful feeling when you were singing. I will take what you delivered over pitch-perfection any day,” Reba assured Alexa. John called Alexa “angelic” and “mesmerizing,” and Gwen told her, “The way you sing sounds like you’re a songwriter. … There was just something so real about it.”

    Who turned? All four coaches.

Result: Team Niall. “How do you make a choice like this?” Alexa gasped, and to be honest, this one could have gone any which way. But Niall seemed to want Alexa most — he was wooing her so aggressively that John joked that it seemed like Niall was about to propose marriage — so this will likely be a good match.

Olivia Minogue, 19: “Lay Me Down”

This woman had the marquee-worthy name of a pop diva, but her performance started off shaky, with awkward phrasing and pacing. However, once she got into “that raspier, bluesier side” of her voice, which was Niall’s “favorite part,” she got a lot more interesting. She’s no Rodrigo and she’s no Kylie, but Niall thought she was a “diamond.” She could be a diamond in the rough.

Who turned? John, Niall, and Reba.

Result: Team Niall. John and Reba knew they didn’t have a shot once Olivia, an avowed Directioner, flashed her prized Niall Horan pendant necklace and got all weak-kneed when Niall gave her a hug. Niall didn’t even need to namedrop his “good friend,” Sam Smith, to land this contestant.

    Kristen Brown, 24: “Blown Away”

A former member of teen country girl group Auburn Road, Kristen’s solo vocals lacked power. This Carrie Underwood barnstormer was way too big for her, and suffice to say, she did not blow me away. But country expert Reba and the country-adjacent Gwen detected potential. “I heard a few little pitch things, but your enthusiasm was wonderful,” said Reba, promising Kristen she would dole out the tough love and “tell you what you need to hear.”

    Who turned? Gwen and Reba.

Result: Team Gwen! Even Gwen seemed shocked, gasping, “What?” I think Kristen made a big mistake here, because she could have flourished more under the guidance of disciplinarian Reba than with the gentle and enabling Gwen (who vowed to “mother” Kristen). But Kristen does sound more like a pop singer than a country crooner, so maybe her decision will make more sense later on.

Mara Justine, 21: “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”

As per usual with Voice premieres, the episode saved the best for last. This ingenue had a truly distinctive throaty, sultry tone, with incredible mastery of her lower register. (“You have such a soft-spoken voice to have such a big voice,” Reba marveled, while Gwen said, “Your voice has so many beautiful parts to it.”) Mara made Elton’s oft-covered classic her own with some interesting and unexpected choices, and she had a lot of sparkle and swagger — the girl’s already a star. Niall told her she’d “set the bar high” for the season, and John called her a “magical gem.”

    Who turned? All four coaches.

    Result: Team… to be continued!

Yep, the premiere ended with a cliffhanger. I think it’s all going to come down to Niall, who pulled out all the obnoxious stops (doing that head-pointy gesture he learned from his old buddy Blake; bringing out Blake’s old foam-finger gimmick; literally lying on the stage floor, begging at Mara’s feet) vs. John, who suggested that Mara duet with him on “All of Me” right then and there. Given how perfectly Mara and John’s vocals blended when she surprisingly accepted that challenge, it seems Mara might go with John — who, after Blake’s departure, has become the Season 24 panel’s veteran coach (this is John’s eighth season).

But then again… Mara might just end joining Team Reba. Tune in Tuesday and find out.
