What Is the Twist on ‘The Voice’ Season 27? Clues and Theories Ahead of Playoffs Reveal

Switching things up! A preview for the second night of playoffs on The Voice season 27 teased host Carson Daly telling coaches John LegendAdam LevineKelsea Ballerini and Michael Bublé about a “surprise twist.” The coaches were shocked at the mystery revelation, which left fans curious about what’s to come.

What Is the Twist on ‘The Voice’ Season 27?

Fans will have to wait until the new episode on May 5, 2025, to find out exactly what the twist will be. However, they’ve already begun to speculate about what could be in store for the coaches and contestants. The most popular theory is that each coach will be allowed to bring one eliminated artist back to their teams for the live shows, which would make the total number of singers in the lives 12 instead of eight.

“My guess is that they’ll get to bring someone back to their team? Or bring someone back in some capacity? That’s the only thing that makes sense,” one fan wrote in a Reddit discussion about the twist.

“Bringing someone back is the only thing that makes sense. But to me, it’s sort of ridiculous. They cut from 5 to 2, and these people have already sung multiple times for their coaches. So if they make them come back, sing again … OK, at this point, they should have just let them keep 3,” another user added.

John seemingly dropped a clue pointing to this theory in the first episode of the playoffs when he mentioned that the pressure was on for the coaches because they could only pick two artists to send to the lives instead of the usual three. Perhaps they will get to have three after all.

Meanwhile, another fan theorized that The Voice will be “asking America to vote” to bring back an eliminated artist, similar to how they did The Comeback Stage with Kelsea in season 15.

‘The Voice’ Fans Hope Britton Moore Returns in Surprise Twist

If the coaches get to bring a contestant back, viewers are already vying for Adam to call up Britton Moore, who was eliminated during the first night of playoffs on April 28, 2025. He performed a chilling rendition of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” and Adam said he “sang the crap out of the song.” However, the coach ultimately decided to select Lucia Flores-Wiseman and Kolby Cordell to move forward in the competition. Many fans of Britton were outraged by the decision.

“DONEEEEE with this show after you robbed him like that,” one user commented after The Voice shared Britton’s performance on TikTok.

Another fan added, “Hands down the best this season! CANNOT BELIEVE HE WENT HOME. He was my pick to win.”

On Instagram, one fan commented, “Hope the twist announced is coaches get to bring someone back on for lives and it’s Britton, how did he let him go? Listened to this clip over and over — more than any of the performances tonight!”

How do the Playoffs Work on ‘The Voice’?

During the first night of playoffs on April 28, 2025, fans watched Adam’s and Kelsea’s teams — each consisting of five artists — perform solo acts and hear feedback from the coaches. Then, at the end of the episode, Adam and Kelsea each chose two artists to move forward to the live shows, eliminating the rest of their teammates.

This same format will continue during the May 5, 2025, episode, with Michael’s and John’s teams. After their artists perform, the coaches will each select two singers to move on to the lives. This will bring the total number of artists performing in the live shows to eight — unless a twist adds more.

Adam Levine Made the Wrong Choice To Strategically Win ‘The Voice’ Season 27

Adam Levine smiles as he watches his team on the Playoffs on 'The Voice' Season 27.

The Voice Season 27 boasted one of the strongest classes of singers in recent memory. Every artist who hit the stage brought a beautiful and unique presence that had an argument to earn the victory at season’s end. However, due to the show’s format, the singers’ fates are contingent upon the coaches’ decisions and their whims. An exceptional singer with immense potential could have their entire journey cut short because they can only pick a select amount of singers to the next round. It’s a difficult process, but that’s the game.

Going into the Playoffs, Adam Levine had the strongest overall roster. He had five exceptional artists representing different niches in music. Ethan Eckenroad brought a coffeehouse quality to the team. There was the booming voice coming out of Conor James performance after performance. Britton Moore was the season’s heartthrob and R&B singer Kolby Cordell‘s life on the show was extended due to a save. And there was the unique vocal stylings of Lucia Flores-Wiseman, who is easily the frontrunner of the season. Coming from different backgrounds and vantages allowed Adam to coach each singer in a manner that worked best for their potential. But when it came down to selecting two singers to move onto the Live round, it was going to be a difficult decision no matter what, but Adam Levine pulled a fast one that was likely rooted in strategy.

Team Adam Delivered During the Playoffs

Adam Levine with his Playoff roster for 'The Voice' Season 27.

Joining Adam Levine this week was LeAnn Rimes, serving as his Mega Mentor. They provided some necessary advice to help ensure that all five singers performed at the best of their abilities. And they did. It truly was a difficult decision for Adam as, based solely on their Playoff performances, any of them could have been victorious. But this game is also about the past and the future. Unlike American Idol, where we have almost double the performances to judge upon, there are only three songs to consider that may reflect what they’ll do next.

Lucia, who was Team Adam’s first singer of the night, took on a hauntingly heartbreaking performance of “In My Life” by The Beatles. As someone who has championed her since the start, it was not her standout performance. Especially compared her peers. Conor James brought the room to their feet with his powerhouse performance of “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan. It was his best performance to date, which is telling, considering he has done exceptionally well already. Kolby Cordell knew his life was on the line, so he infused a newfound energy into Bruno Mars‘ “Finesse.” Ethan, knowing he was likely on the way out, ended his run with Lord Huron‘s “The Night We Met,” staying true to his artistry. And then, the coveted “pimp spot” was given to Britton Moore who, once again, gave a pitch-perfect performance, this time of “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane. It was raw. It was beautiful. It was everything he needed to do to jump up in the power rankings.

Girl Named Tom performs on 'The Voice' Season 21.

Adam Levine Makes a Shocking Decision on ‘The Voice’

On paper, it should have been Lucia, and then either Conor or Britton. Conor has been consistent and, going by the show’s title, he has the best voice in the competition. Britton is a star in the making. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of his journey to superstardom? Adam started with the obvious. His first selection was rightly Lucia. But then, he pulled an audible and selected Kolby as his second artist. It was a massive shock. I think everyone in the studio was gobsmacked. But it may actually benefit his chance at winning for the fourth time in the end.

Both Conor and Britton would easily have a fan following that would help propel them towards the top. And that would not be good in a game where votes matter. With both singers out of the way, it sets up a clearer path for Lucia, the number one singer in the overall power rankings. Kolby was a stolen contestant. While it’s not fair to say that Adam won’t help him in this next round, it just gives him more opportunity to let his star artist shine. While we await the decisions from Michael Bublé and John Legend, Lucia’s biggest rival will be Iris Herrera. Both women have a folk edge to them that could negate votes, but what a world it would be to see them battling in the very end for the win. Right now, Adam has ensured that Lucia will be performing on finale night by preventing her teammates from continuing their journey. It’s a terrible statement, but that’s reality competition shows. Pour one out for Conor and Britton. They’ll be fine in the end.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. All episodes are available to stream on Peacock.

Tim Allen Has Some Sad News for ‘Shifting Gears’ Fans as Actor Hints at Retirement

Custom image from Jefferson Chacon of Tim Allen smiling and looking off to the left for Shifting Gears

Tim Allen is no stranger to charming audiences via that evergreen genre of situation comedies, or sitcoms as we like to say. But even though his latest series, Shifting Gears, is already a ratings smash for ABC, Allen is thinking ahead and shifting gears himself, from full speed ahead, to parking the acting car. At 71, Allen has built a legendary career in TV comedy, leading three long-running sitcoms that have dominated network primetime — Home Improvement, Last Man Standing, and now Shifting Gears. But despite comparisons to TV’s GOATs—one person even likened him to “the Tom Brady of sitcoms”—Allen knows nothing lasts forever.

This probably will be the end of it,” Allen revealed to USA Today. “That sounds depressing, but I did (Shifting Gears) because it seemed like a good idea that would be fun. That’s really it.

Allen added that he felt at home in on a set and in front of the lights, and that the idea of giving it up hurt him, but he also admitted that time was running out for him to continue performing at the level to which he, and by extension, the audience, have grown accustomed.

“I just love being around the camera people and actors and the crew, so much so that I’m more uncomfortable at the thought of leaving the set and, God forbid, going to play golf.”

    What is ‘Shifting Gears’ About?

Shifting Gears finds Allen playing Matt Parker, an old-school auto restoration shop owner and widowed father struggling to adjust when his daughter Riley (2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings) moves back home with her kids. The cast also includes American Pie’s Seann William Scott and Galaxy Quest’s Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Parker’s shop crew and, for Allen, it feels like this is the final evolution of the TV persona he’s been shaping for decades.

This is getting closer and closer to the guy you see at my stand-up shows now,” he explained. “‘Home Improvement’ was literally just my stand-up show, where Last Man Standing reflected the fact that I had daughters and I wanted a lead guy who was smarter than Tim Taylor. So this new guy now, Matt Parker, he’s more of what I really am.”

Past episodes of Shifting Gears are available to stream on Disney+. New episodes air Wednesdays on ABC. Stay with Collider for the latest updates on Tim Allen and Shifting Gears.

Laurie Metcalf SLAMS Finale as “Incomplete” in SHOCKING Interview! Prepare for behind-the-scenes DRAMA as “Roseanne” and “The Conners” icon Laurie Metcalf unleashes a scathing critique of the very show she helped build! Sources reveal Metcalf felt the highly anticipated series finale utterly failed to deliver, leaving the Conner saga hanging precariously.

Laurie Metcalf Was Right — ‘The Conners’ Series Finale Didn’t Feel “Completed”

Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman in The Conners Season 7, Episode 2.

The Conners’ two-part series finale has officially aired, but the show could’ve executed itself a little better. However, the lacking series finale was to be expected. After being on air for about seven years, the latest Roseanne revival has come to an end in six episodes. During the last few weeks, Dan Conner (John Goodman) gained the courage to sue the pharmaceutical companies for Roseanne’s death, and Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) became a cop again. Becky (Lecy Goranson) found the love of her life and landed the job of her dreams. On the other hand, Darlene (Sara Gilbert) still had some struggles within her marriage.

However, she was learning how to take a step back and let her children make their own decisions. Last week though, the show released a two-part series finale where The Conners said goodbye to their beloved Roseanne and viewers for the final time. We knew the finale was coming, and we also knew it’d lack a certain level of luster because, in an interview with People, Metcalf warned fans that the series finale may not feel complete. She teased, “There’s a lot to wrap up, and I think the writers are really working hard to get everybody’s storylines sort of… not completed. It’s not going to have a big bow tied up with the Conners.” Unfortunately, her warning was pretty spot-on.

Two of The Conners Were Completely Missing From the Finale

When it comes to series finales, most viewers like myself expect to have their lingering questions answered. Of course, realistically, not all the questions that have arisen over the last several decades, spun across all the revivals, will be answered in an essentially one-hour special. However, we did expect to have some of the most pertinent questions answered, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, while some progress with the stars was made, two of the Conners’ children were missing: DJ and Jerry. The series finale did highlight many changes and a lot of growth for the stars.

For example, Becky finished school and, despite being too open at an interview, landed a job that made her feel like she was on the right path. There were also small homages to the original show, such as Jackie tapping into her passions and becoming a cop again. However, when it comes to the two youngest stars, they weren’t even mentioned. The truth behind their whereabouts and connection to the family wasn’t answered. While Jerry’s whereabouts have been mysterious all series long, DJ and his daughter were part of the initial Conners crew. His wife, who worked for the army, also appeared later in the series, but the finale didn’t even mention the younger kids of the titular family.

Is This Really the End for ‘The Conners’?

Darlene, Jackie, Dan, Harris, and Becky sitting around a kitchen table smiling and laughing on The Conners.

Considering this was the series finale, one that also highlighted a special goodbye to Roseanne, having all the Conners there would’ve been a special touch. Jackie, Becky, Darlene, Dan, as well as the grandkids all had an opportunity to say their peace and update Roseanne at her grave. Meanwhile, DJ and his family, as well as Jerry, weren’t even hinted at. Again, Jerry’s been missing from the beginning, but the production team at one point hinted at some family drama that would be answered in the future. The series finale would’ve been a great opportunity to cover that storyline, especially if it would’ve helped explain his lack of an appearance.

On the other hand, DJ was especially involved in the show from the beginning, so learning his and his family’s whereabouts would’ve been a nice way to wrap up the character as was done with the rest of the characters. Maybe by not addressing these concerns, it allows the show to potentially create more revivals down the road where they do answer these questions. However, while The Conners series finale maintained its balance between addressing real-life concerns and most of the stars’ lives, the show certainly dropped the ball on answering all of our questions. We might have to just chalk the Jerry situation up to a retcon fiasco and accept that the series will never feel complete.

You can watch all episodes of The Conners on Netflix in the U.S.

Michael Fishman was written off of “The Conners” after season 4, but some fans felt that he should’ve come back for the series finale, which aired on Wednesday, April 23.

The final episode of season 7 tied up the titular family’s story nicely, with the Conners clan gathering at matriarch Roseanne’s grave. (Roseanne Barr starred in the OG series “Roseanne,” but was not included in the continuation series “The Conners” due to a series of controversial tweets.)

Fishman’s character, D.J. Conner, was not even mentioned in the series finale, although he did appear in some flashback clips. Fishman took to Instagram on Thursday, April 24, to say he’s been “inundated” with messages from fans who are expecting him to be angry about the snub.

“People seem to want to have there be some kind of conflict or controversy, especially on my part. The reality is, all I really have is empathy and understanding for all of the people on set and for all of our audience that’s grieving,” Fishman said in a video. “I prefer to be a lighthouse in the dark. It’s for that reason that I’m creating a safe space to build community to process difficult emotions and transitions.”

The actor added that he has “only gratitude” when he looks back on the “legacy” of “Roseanne” and “The Conners.”

In the caption, he wrote that he is “thankful for the Gift of Grief.”

Fishman shared another message of positivity on Tuesday, April 29. In an Instagram video, he noted that “people seem to want us, nowadays, to all fight and be divisive.”

“The whole point of the show I grew up on was finding the joy and having a little less,” he said of the Conners’ working-class values. “We didn’t complain, because we’re proud of who we were.”

Back in 2022, Fishman said he was “told” that he would not be returning for season 5 of “The Conners,” suggesting that it was not his choice.

“While I was told I would not be returning for season 5, Lanford was a valuable place to grow up, learn, and develop. I was incredibly lucky to return home and demonstrate my expansion,” he said in a statement to People at the time. “As I venture into the world to build the future, I send tremendous love and success to everyone involved in production.”

In addition to Fishman, John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), and Lecy Goranson (Becky) all reprised their “Roseanne” roles on “The Conners.”

“The Conners” is available to stream on Hulu.

‘Happy’s Place’ Showrunner Reveals Season 2 Plans for a ‘Reba’ Reunion, Romance & More

Reba McEntire in Happy's Place - Season 1

    Preview

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Happy’s Place Season 1 Episode 18, “Alarm Bells.”]

Happy’s Place may have wrapped its Season 1 run, but showrunner Kevin Abbott already has big plans for Season 2 which was previously announced by NBC.

“The network told us that we were picked up for Season 2 the night of our last taping,” Abbott recalls. “So just before we started taping at six o’clock that Tuesday night, they called us into the room and told us.” While the opportunity to continue telling these characters’ stories certainly excites Abbott, the pick-up shifts some of the planning.

“I’ll lay out arcs to see where we can get the characters to,” he notes of his process, and while they’re “not set in stone,” he says, “we generally land around those areas [that are mapped out]. And this season, because we didn’t find out we were getting a back order and how many [episodes that would include] until after we’d shot the original 13, I didn’t really have a chance to lay all the groundwork to get to where I wanted these characters to go.”

So, where will they go next? Abbott’s already begun planting the seeds that people have seen so far this season, but they’ll go even further in Season 2.

For those less acquainted with Happy’s Place, it tells the story of Bobbie (Reba McEntire), a woman who discovers she has a secret younger sister, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo) when their father’s will is read, bequeathing them with the titular bar he once oversaw. In addition to following Bobbie and Isabella, the fabric of this show also includes bartender Gabby (Melissa Peterman), cook Emmett (Rex Linn), worker Takoda (Tokala Black Elk), and regular patron Steve (Pablo Castelblanco).

As Abbott looks ahead to the future, he teases that Season 2 will further explore arcs like “Gabby’s motherhood [journey], the Bobbie-Emmett relationship, Isabella and her backstory… Steve’s becoming a really interesting character to me. We want to find out more about Takoda’s home life.”

“We wanted to spend a lot of time in Season 1 letting the audience get to know the characters,” Abbott says, “Then we’ll get to branch out a little bit more in Season 2 now.” Some ideas have been percolating for so long that Abbott reveals, “I’ve had in my head where I want these characters to go since before we actually wrote the pilot. So we’re getting there.”

After welcoming several Reba favorites into the mix with guest roles in Season 1 for Steve Howey and Christopher Rich, Abbott promises more reunions are on the horizon if it’s up to him. “We definitely want to bring Joanna [Garcia Swisher] in. We’ve been talking to her. It’s a matter of timing for her.”

What do you think of Abbott’s plans for Bobbie, Isabella, and the rest of the gang? Let us know in the comments section, below, and stay tuned for any possible updates as Happy’s Place Season 2 takes shape.

As Peterman recalled, there was one occasion where Gabby says something like, “It’s possible to love somebody and totally resent them, that’s what my mom taught me.” Peterman clings to remarks like that for building Gabby’s backstory as a performer. “That’s a lot of information to have about how she grew up,” Peterman noted of these little gems of dialogue Gabby drops from time to time.

“I assumed because of the way we talk about what my mother…. I assumed that my parents were divorced,” Peterman said of her character’s outlook and family status. “I got some information in one of our [recent] episodes, that my parents are not divorced, which is surprising, and I’m excited.”

She added, “I think that [showrunner] Kevin Abbott has some ideas to explain that.” As for whether we’ll see Gabby’s parents onscreen or not, Peterman didn’t know for certain, but she’s already starting a campaign to get Hacks Emmy-winner Jean Smart on as her TV mom: “I’m going to throw it out there. You didn’t ask, [but my] dream person to play my mother is Jean Smart, because we talk about Gabby’s mom [and how] she is formidable.”

Whether that will come to pass remains to be seen, but in the meantime, Peterman is delving into other Season 2 hopes and plans, including which Reba stars she’d like to see visit Happy’s Place barroom, in the full video interview above. Stay tuned for more.

One Change Ryan Seacrest Would Like To Make To Filming Wheel Of Fortune (That Makes Total Sense)

When Ryan Seacrest was revealed to be Pat Sajak’s replacement as the host of Wheel of Fortune — one of the best game shows of all time — one thing that made Vanna White feel better about losing her colleague of 40-plus years was Seacrest’s repeated insistence that he wasn’t trying to change anything Sajak had spent decades establishing. But it turns out there is one thing that he would like to adjust, and it’s very on-brand for Seacrest.

As Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White continue to appear in syndication on the 2025 TV schedule, fans have mostly accepted the new host since he made his Wheel of Fortune debut. The co-hosts recently took WPXI Channel 11 behind the scenes of the game show, discussing the fast-paced operation that allows them to film six episodes a day, back-to-back. They shared that there’s typically a 15-minute break in between games, but that’s where Seacrest sees an opportunity for change. He joked:

    I’d like 9.

Coming from someone who holds multiple major hosting gigs simultaneously, it makes sense that Ryan Seacrest would understand the value of every minute and work to maximize his time. When he’s not hosting Wheel of Fortune, after all, he’s introducing the world to budding musicians on American Idol and counting down the hits on the American Top 40 radio show.

By cutting 6 minutes out of every break, Ryan Seacrest — and Vanna White and the entire cast and crew — could technically get back a half-hour of the day. However, I have to imagine the quicker changeover might not be as easy for Seacrest’s on-air partner.

While the host does have to change his wardrobe between tapings, I’m guessing that putting on a new suit is a slightly quicker process than Vanna White’s breaktime routine.

Vanna White’s iconic outfits have been an important part of Wheel of Fortune for decades, and while trying on 20 to 30 dresses before taping starts likely makes her changing process more efficient, I am exhausted just thinking about her having only 15 minutes to get a new gown on and make any necessary hair and makeup adjustments.

Would it even be physically possible to do it in 9 minutes? And that’s not even taking into consideration what all the crew has to do to prepare for the next taping.

Filming six episodes a day does sound like a lot, but only having to work 34 days a year for an eight-figure salary is likely motivation enough to keep things moving.

With Wheel of Fortune being a well-oiled machine 42 seasons in, I doubt any significant changes are coming anytime soon, regardless of how much Ryan Seacrest wants those 30 minutes of his day back.

Check your local listings to see when Wheel Of Fortune airs in your area, and you can catch Pat Sajak hosting one last season of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune at 8 p.m. ET Wednesdays on ABC and streaming the next day with a Hulu subscription.
