Michael Che Defends ‘SNL Weekend Update’ Partner From Writer’s Scorn

    NBC

Don’t mess with Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update team. That was the takeaway after segment co-star Michael Che posted a series of vulgar rebuttals to an article attacking his fellow host, Colin Jost.

In an Uproxx article titled Why Does Everyone (Still) Hate ‘SNL”s Colin Jost?, writer Steven Hyden took issue with the host’s demeanor on the segment.

“Nobody has been quite as disliked, while also being as central to the show, as Jost. Among the people I know who like ‘SNL,’ Jost (at best) is a benign presence whose essential blandness precludes feeling one way or the other about his tenure on ‘Weekend Update,’ or (at worst) a smug hack who relies far too often on easy, frat-dude punchlines about porno movies and penis sizes,” Hyden wrote.

Michael Che jokes about doing less work on 'SNL' than Colin Jost

Hyden also mentioned that most of his Twitter feed seems to hate SNL. “Jost is nothing less than the epitome of white-male mediocrity, an empty vessel who is handsome (but not that handsome), smart enough (but not all that smart), and, well, passably funny (though only if you grade on a generous curve). He seems less like a comedian than a cardboard ’80s movie villain — like James Spader if he looked like a beefier Andrew McCarthy — with zero self-consciousness when it comes to bragging about how he gets his boat shoes wet at the finest beaches in the Hamptons.”

Che responded with a series of Instagram stories, most of them vulgar and since deleted, but captured by some in screen grabs. Hyden had written that Che was funnier than Jost, but that was not enough to spare him the rod.

Hyden took the attacks in stride in his Twitter response.

“Dear Michael Che, I don’t feel harassed,” Hyden tweeted. “Your bit about me having sex with dogs was hilarious. Have a nice Easter. Your pal, Steve.”

Colin Jost Details Relationship Between Son Cosmo and Scarlett Johansson’s Daughter Rose

Colin Jost gave an inside look into how his and Scarlett Johansson’s 3-year-old son Cosmo gets along with her and ex-husband Romain Duriac’s 10-year-old daughter Rose.

Live from New York, it’s Colin Jost with an adorable update.

The Saturday Night Live star gave an inside look into his life at home with wife Scarlett Johansson, their 3-year-old son Cosmo and the actress’ 10-year-old daughter Rose (who she shares with ex Romain Duriac).

“The two of them spent a lot of time together this summer, which was nice for them,” the comedian exclusively told E! News. “She’s a very nice, loving sister.”

Because assembling their brood isn’t always easy.  “Normally she’s got her own life,” Jost—whose new comedy special Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark airs on Peacock Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. ET—continued, “but this time she was forced to stay with him for a lot of time, and they got along really well.”

Which means Rose was also there for one of Cosmo’s biggest milestones yet.

“He drank some milk and then said, ‘Some things in life you just have to savor,’” the 42-year-old star recounted of his son’s deadpan joke. “Which I thought was nice.” (For more with Colin and Michael, tune into E! News tonight, Sept. 11.)

After which Colin confirmed, “He is funny. He’s sort of shy sometimes, but he’s a gregarious little guy. He’s fun.”

Colin’s glimpse into his and Scarlett’s private life comes as a rare occurrence, as the two often opt to maintain a low profile since tying the knot in 2020.

Scarlett has, however, previously revealed how Rose first adjusted to her big sister duties after welcoming Cosmo in 2021.

“She’s pretty neutral about it,” the Black Widow star said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2021, “which I think is a good thing.”

She continued, “I imagine that they’ll be very different people. You know, my daughter is a little bossy. I don’t know where she gets it from, and she’s very headstrong…Well, he’s just putting his feet in his mouth. So, he seems pretty laid-back.”

Her motherhood journey hasn’t been so chill, rightfully so.

“It’s really tough,” Scarlett said during an April 2023 appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast. “I remember my daughter when she was 2, I said, ‘This is great. I don’t know what everybody is talking about.’ And then she turned 3, and it’s like being in an emotionally abusive relationship.”

“It’s crazy, very intense emotional swings and so bossy and adamant,” she recalled of that toddler era. “And also these huge, constant mood swings…You’re up and down constantly.”

Babies, on the other hand, are much easier to handle.

“Having a baby is so lovely,” she gushed. “They’re so cute. They sit there and they love you and then that’s it. And you just get love from them.”

Watch Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson Roast Colin Jost on Their Olympic Highlights Show

The jokes are comedy gold on Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson.

If roasting was an Olympic sport, Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson would be taking home the gold.

Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson is an eight-episode Peacock series in which the two comedians recap moments from the 2024 Paris Olympics, while adding their hilarious insights of course.

Their July 29 episode included a chat with Colin Jost. In addition to gearing up for Saturday Night Live‘s upcoming historic 50th season, Jost is currently in Tahiti to cover the surfing events.

To kick off the interview, Hart asked Jost why he’s covering surfing. “It’s a great question. I love surfing,” Jost said. “I don’t want to surf here where they’re doing it, ’cause it looks like a place I could die, but I love surfing.”

“Surfing in Paris is traditionally bad. It’s more of a river setup. French Polynesia offers some of the best surf in the world so even though it’s very far away and very early in the morning here, much earlier than I would like to be alive, we’re doing the surfing here. it’s one of the best waves in the entire world,” he explained.

Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson joke with Colin Jost about his Olympics beachside setup

While Hart and Thompson are in a studio, Jost is broadcasting from a sunny beach, and he revealed that it is not as glamorous as it looks.

“You guys have the advantage of being in a studio, whereas I have a laptop that’s perched on top of a barbecue cooler,” Jost deadpanned. “I’ve got chickens as producers, and there’s flies swarming around the camera.” A behind-the-scenes picture of the setup proved Jost was not joking.

“Sounds like a great time, Colin,” Hart responded.

“Colin, I hate to tell you, I don’t think you’re in Tahiti man, I think you’re at my Grandmama’s house,” Thompson said.

They showed some footage of the “Weekend Update” anchor surfing in Tahiti, but he looked very far away from shore, which provided more fodder for their Jost roast.

“Are you going back to the beach or you going somewhere else?” asked Hart.

Jost told Hart and Thompson about getting to catch some waves with five-time world champion surfer Carissa Moore, who is back to compete in this year’s Games after winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

As they ended their interview, Thompson warned Jost that the chickens behind him were “getting aggressive,” with Hart adding, “Those chickens are starting to run a lot faster behind you. I don’t know what’s happening, but boy the number sure has ramped up since we started.”

Hart and Thompson covering the Olympics is pure comedy gold.

  • SNL Slammed by Oasis’ Liam Gallagher After Recent ‘Excruciating’ Skit

SNL Slammed by Oasis’ Liam Gallagher After Recent ‘Excruciating’ Skit

SNL Slammed by Oasis’ Liam Gallagher After Recent ‘Excruciating’ Skit

Still from the SNL Oasis sketch.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has taken aim at Saturday Night Live after the long-running sketch show mocked him and his older brother Noel Gallagher in the most recent episode. Cast members James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman donned wigs and sunglasses to parody their infamous sibling rivalry as the duo currently prepares for their musical comeback. A fan on X asked Gallagher how he felt about the impersonation and the British rock star had one word for how he felt about the parody…

    Excruciating.

The 3-minute skit saw Johnson as Noel and Sherman as Liam sparring while answering Colin Jost’s questions about their upcoming reunion tour. When the clip hit social media, U.K. viewers were less than impressed with their attempts at the brother’s signature Mancunian accent. “Nothing can prepare you for the accents you are going to hear in this video,” this post on X from @Milo_Edwards reads. Another fan, @DKilmartin12118, added, “They did you dirty man,” with Gallagher replying, “I wouldn’t expect anything else from them,” before adding…

“Are they meant to be comedians.”

Ariana Grande hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time over the weekend, featuring icon Stevie Nicks as the musical guest. In the “Weekend Update” skit, Johnson and Sherman as Liam and Noel agreed on a couple of things while squabbling: their favorite cartoon (SpongeBob SquarePants), their favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Donatello), their favorite Will Smith movie (I Am Legend), the best Rugrat (Tommy Pickles), and their favorite Sex and the City boyfriend is Steve Brady while their least favorite is Mr. Big, whom they dub a “toxic legend.” You can check out the excruciating sketch for yourself below.

Oasis Reunites for Global Tour After 19-Year Hiatus

Oasis appeared as the musical guest SNL back in October 1997 when late actor Matthew Perry hosted. A fan asked Liam about the experience on X and he replied, “I actually don’t remember being on it.” Many fans on social media noted that being mocked on SNL underscores the band’s continued relevance over three decades after initially forming in Manchester in 1991. In 2016, director Mat Whitecross chronicled their rise to international acclaim in the documentary Oasis: Supersonic. At the time, the filmmaker told MovieWeb in an exclusive interview:

“[Liam] is one of the few people I’ve met in my life who can say two completely contradictory things in the space of one sentence and still be happy in its truth. “I f*cking hate my brother and I love him,” or whatever it is. Or he’ll be quite humble about himself and then in the same time say he’s one of the greatest rock and rollers of all time.

The first time I met Noel, I was kind of terrified walking into the room, because he was a huge hero of mine, like you. It was one of those things where I didn’t really know what to [expect]. Luckily, he immediately sets you at ease and is very down to earth and very funny.”

The Gallagher brothers’ bickering was notorious when the band toured in the 1990s, prompting their unexpected split in 2009. In August, they announced their first performances in 16 years and released dates for a global 2025 tour. The outing will mark the 30th anniversary of Oasis’ second album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which sold 22 million copies worldwide.

Spirit Halloween slams ‘irrelevant’ Saturday Night Live after season 50 premiere sketch

The offending sketch in question plays as an uplifting commercial spoof of the store, which is America’s largest Halloween retailer.

Spirit Halloween has a spooky response to Saturday Night Live‘s recent sketch about them.

The seasonal retailer retweeted the sketch, which debuted in Saturday’s season 50 premiere, on Monday with the caption, “We are great at raising things back from the dead @nbcsnl.” The tweet also included a picture for a fake costume resembling the ones the Halloween store actually sells for “SNL 50: The Anniversary Season,” which is described on the packaging as an “irrelevant 50-year-old TV show.” The fake costume is said to include: “dated references,” “unknown cast members,” and “shrinking ratings.”

The offending SNL sketch in question plays as an uplifting commercial spoof of the store, which is America’s largest Halloween retailer. In it, employees from Spirit Halloween hilariously tout the company’s raison d’être: “We don’t see a dead-end town. We don’t see an abandoned Kmart. We see a spirit, a Spirit Halloween. Since 1983, Spirit Halloween has been helping our struggling communities by setting up shop in every vacant building in the country for six weeks and then bouncing. And thanks to us, what used to be a condemned AutoZone where a murder happened is once again a thriving business… where a murder happened.”

    Spirit Halloween - SNL

    “Spirit Halloween” – ‘SNL’.NBC

The spoof also claims the store is “providing vulnerable communities with the things they need most: wigs that give you a rash, single-use fog machines, and costumes of famous characters tweaked just enough to avoid a lawsuit.”

As an example of the latter, the joke ends with a little girl asking a store employee played by Chloe Fineman if they have a Taylor Swift costume. “You bet,” she tells the girl before handing her a costume packet (not unlike the faux SNL one that Spirit tweeted out, above) for a “blonde singing woman.” When the girl points out that the costume is not Swift, Fineman perfectly deadpans, “And neither are you.”

The SNL season 50 premiere featured host Jean Smart and musical guest Jelly Roll. In addition to the Spirit Halloween sketch, the episode famously featured a cold open in which Maya Rudolph returned to play Vice President Kamala Harris; Andy Samberg showed up to play her husband, Doug Emhoff; Dana Carvey played President Biden; and Jim Gaffigan popped by as Gov. Tim Walz. Current cast member James Austin Johnson was back as the show’s resident Donald Trump, while Bowen Yang filled the shoes of the former president’s current veep pick, J.D. Vance.

Live from Peacock on Jan. 16, audiences will hear first-hand experiences from legendary “Saturday Night Live” comedians, writers and guest hosts in a look back at the long-running sketch show.

The first trailer for the four-part documentary series, “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” dropped on Monday, featuring some of comedy’s brightest faces like Amy Poehler, Larry David, Damon Wayans, Will Ferrell and so many more. The documentary will showcase over 60 contributors reflecting on five decades of the longest-running sketch variety show on television.

This isn’t the first venture that has given “Saturday Night Live” its flowers. In September, the film, “Saturday Night,” starring Gabriel LaBelle as a young Lorne Michaels, chronicled the chaotic debut of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975.

Comedian Tracy Morgan, a “Saturday Night Live” cast member from 1996 to 2021, opens the trailer for the new doc, saying, “Anybody can do comedy. I could teach all of y’all in here to tell jokes and do comedy, but are you funny?” before a montage of various sketches rolls.

“It’s an American institution,” David says elsewhere in the trailer.

The docuseries is meant to take audiences back to “Saturday Night Live’s” early days when the show came close to cancellation. According to the trailer, after the sketch show debuted in 1975, it became the “biggest show ever,” and “there was nothing like it.” “SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night” will also showcase some of the show’s most popular sketches, bringing on comedians like Jimmy Fallon to discuss their best hits.

Fallon says of the documentary, “This is beyond my wildest dreams that they’re making a documentary about the cowbell sketch.” The “Cowbell Sketch” is a sketch that aired in 2000 with guest host Christopher Walken. It currently has 28 million views on YouTube.

Jenna Bush Hager Gets Ready for New ‘Today’ Spotlight

Jenna Bush Hager’s new turn as the lead of the 10 a.m. hour of “Today” is days away, and she’s already stopping traffic.

On a cold December afternoon on the streets surrounding NBC’s midtown Manhattan headquarters, Bush Hager is trying to cross against a “Don’t Walk” sign — and, surprisingly, the driver of a car eager to push through a New York City intersection lets her do it.  “Don’t run me over!” she shouts as passers-by eager for a picture or a short conversation follow her.

Bush Hager is stepping around NBC’s Rockefeller Center offices to tape a new opening for her hour of “Today,” one that, as of January 13, will no longer feature longtime co-anchor Hoda Kotb, who is leaving both her 10 a.m. co-host job as well as the one she holds at 7. That opens new territory for Hager. Viewers of the retooled hour will be greeted with a new segment that shows her stepping through a nearby park, exiting a doughnut shop and entering NBC’s studios via a revolving door. Her turn in the streets is reminiscent of the opening of the famed “Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

“We didn’t mean for that to happen, but we’re not mad at it,” Hager tells Variety during an interview outside the “Today” dressing rooms adjacent to the program’s longtime NBC home, Studio 1A.

The reference to the old sitcom nods to the question everyone who watches daytime TV is asking: Will Jenna Bush Hager make it after all?

Hoda Kotb has been part of the 10 a.m. hour of “Today” since 2007, first as part of a trio that included Ann Curry and Natalie Morales, then as one half of a duo that had her mix it up with the brassy Kathie Lee Gifford, and, finally, paired with Bush Hager. Every transition has clicked — a relief to NBC, no doubt, because engineering successions in morning TV is one of the genre’s most difficult feats. Her exit has created a jigsaw puzzle of sorts for NBC News, because Kotb co-anchored three hours of “Today” along with other projects. Craig Melvin will succeed her at 7 a.m., but finding someone to pick up what she does in the 10 a.m., hour, which calls for more empathy and inspiration, and less straitlaced reportage, is not an easy feat.

So the network is going to try something it has not attempted in the past. When Bush Hager debuts “Jenna and Friends” at 10 a.m. on January 13, she will do so with her first guest host, Taraji P. Henson, who will also appear Friday. Eva Longoria and Keke Palmer will also sit with Bush Hager. Others will follow, with some staying for a week at a time and others, perhaps, for just a day or two. The goal, says Talia Parkinson-Jones, the executive producer of Bush Hager’s program, is to find a match for the show’s unique host — and not necessarily with someone who possesses the same qualities as Kotb.

“Hoda is the queen, you know, and she brings something so special. I don’t think you can ever replicate that,” she says, adding: “We’re in this new version of the show, and it’s really Jenna’s dating. We get a chance to meet different people, and we’ll fall in love one day, but until then we’re just having a really good time.” “Today” audiences will still see Kotb on occasion, as she will make A.M. appearances, continue to host a wellness podcast, and make other cameos tied to NBCU programming.

Jenna Bush Hager Announces New 'Today' Guest Co-Host After Hoda Kotb's Departure

There’s good reason to get serious behind the show’s sunny disposition. The 10 a.m. hour is NBC’s bid to compete for live audiences in the late mornings, and to carve out some of the ground tilled by ABC’s syndicated “Live,” with spouses Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, or CBS’ “Drew Barrymore.” The network won’t get it by sticking to what’s been “Today” tradition in the first two hours of the schedule. And in this era of digital media, there’s a wider field of rivals to consider, with everything from Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast to any number of TikTok personalities dispensing advice and inspiration.

“This is the part of the ‘Today’ morning where you’re the most honest and raw and personal. You hear everything from Hoda and Jenna, and I think that’s what the audience has come to expect,” says Libby Leist, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees all aspects of “Today.” “They really love when our talent shares the personal, shares advice and themes you may not always see in more of the news programs.”

Bush Hager never envisioned herself in such a role when she was first starting out in a career. She initially was a teacher at a charter school in Washington, D.C., before getting into writing. She was noticed within a few years of publishing her first book by NBC, which has developed a reputation for being interested in members of well-known U.S. political families, and has hired Maria Shriver as well as, for a shorter period, Chelsea Clinton. Bush Hager is the daughter of former President George W. Bush.

She was quickly assigned to contribute segments to “Today.” Viewers may recall her appearances  in common-person-turns-daredevil segments with Natalie Morales that had the pair go camping and rock climbing or tackle various stunts at amusement parks and natural wonders. In 2015, word leaked out that she was under consideration for a daytime show of her own, possibly for syndication. She has also worked to build new franchises for NBC, including her book club – a reflection of a personal pastime inspired by her mother’s work as a librarian.

“My parents and sister are not surprised at all,” she says of her current job. “I mean, I was an entertainer, you know. I like to make people laugh. They kind of regret laughing at me because it has encouraged me.”

She’s taking part in the behind-the-scenes discussions on her show. When it comes to finding a new co-host, she says, “I am involved.”

She prefers to work with a partner, perhaps a natural inclination for someone who grew up with a twin sister. “What I loved about doing the show was Hoda, you know?” she says, along with the production staff behind the camera. There is no mandated timeline to come up with a new partner, she says. “Chill out,” she advises those who want her to make a choice quickly. “I feel like our audience deserves the time to get to know a ton of different people, ton of different backgrounds. We’re hoping to pull up the chairs to all different types of people. I think there will be some surprises for sure. And so it’s like when we know, I think we’ll know.”

Still, interest seems to be high. As Bush Hager walks around Manhattan, she is stopped multiple times by people who want to talk to her about her father, about Kotb leaving, about getting a quick selfie. It’s a wonder she can get anywhere. And until she and her crew pick out a new partner, the onus will be on Bush Hager, as it was on Mary Tyler Moore, to take even a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.

‘Jeopardy!’ player with bad blood over botched Taylor Swift question shakes it off for redemption

    Taylor Swift performs

This “Jeopardy!” player thankfully didn’t draw a blank again when a Taylor Swift clue came on the board.

Contestant Drew Goins correctly answered a Swift-related query in an episode that aired Monday night, just minutes after explaining his embarrassment over previously botching a question about the world’s most famous entertainer.

The show is currently airing its “Second Chance,” competition, allowing players who didn’t win in their initial “Jeopardy!” appearance to have another opportunity to qualify for the franchise’s “Tournament of Champions.”

And during Monday night’s player introduction segment, Goins recalled how he failed to know a Swift-related question on his previous “Jeopardy!” appearance, much to the chagrin of his Swiftie brother who had prepped him on the topic.

In an episode that aired Sept. 25, an $800 “Grammy Album of the Year” answer was: “The first of Taylor Swift’s record 4 AOTY Grammys was for this album in 2010.”

Swift’s most devoted fans will forever and always know that it was “Fearless,” but Goins and his two competitors didn’t ring in.

Goins’ brother was in the studio audience for the show that aired Monday, and Goins, who lives in Hawaii and works for The Washington Post, pointed him out.

Goins had control of the board for the final answer of the first round, in the category of “Albums,” when this answer popped on to the screen: “In 2014 Taylor Swift gave us this album named for a different year.”

The audience erupted in laughter mid-clue, knowing Goins’ wildest dreams were about to come true, with a chance to shake off previous embarrassment and repair his reputation.

Drew’s version didn’t disappoint, buzzing in first and joyously yelling out the correct question: “What is ‘1989’?!”

The crowd went wild, and host Ken Jennings matched Goins’ style of enthusiasm, declaring an end to any bad blood between the contestant and Swifties.

“Redemption for Drew!” Jennings said to Goins, who went on to win the game and stay alive in the tournament.

“They are officially engaged to be married! There are no finer people than these, and there will be no finer couple. Congratulations to both.”

Trump signed off the note with the initials DJT.

Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt gushed about her Christmas engagement to network star Sean Hannity on Monday, adding that she will keep living in New York while her beau—who abandoned the Big Apple for Florida last year—will stay in the Sunshine State.

“I’m staying on the curvy couch,” she said, of the Fox News’ chat show’s hallmark sofa. “I’m going to continue to live in New York. My daughter loves her school, I love my community, and obviously I love my job.”

Hannity’s affection for Earhardt, meanwhile, does not extend to the Empire State. The Hannity host claimed he was “finished” with the blue state last year and relocated his TV and radio broadcasts south.

“Sean is down in Florida, and we don’t miss a weekend without each other, so we see each other,” Earhardt said. “We make it work. It’s easy.”

Earhardt said Hannity surprised her with a morning proposal at a church while she was visiting him in Florida over the holidays.

“I thought we were going to a meeting, and we pulled up to the church instead,” she told her colleagues. “I said, this is not the right turn. And he said, ‘We’re not going to the meeting.‘”

She said, after sitting alone together on the front pew and reflecting on their relationship, Hannity walked her to the altar “and got down on one knee.”

Hannity’s Florida relocation followed President-elect Donald Trump, who changed his residency from New York to Florida in 2019.

By chance, Trump’s wife Melania has also expressed a fondness for New York, which she called “home” in August as her son Barron prepared to enroll at New York University.

“Finally, for the first time that I can think of in my adult life, I actually have representatives in the state that I’m living in that share my values,” Hannity said, on a radio broadcast after making his move.

In addition to his now primary abode in Florida, the conservative host reportedly also owns residences in Alabama, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Vermont.

“I respect him so much,” said Earhardt, of her new fiancé. “I look up to him he’s been there for all of us in our careers. We all love and adore him, and then we fell in love a few years ago, and it’s been a wonderful ride. I’m so grateful.”
