‘First Time Ever’ AI Shakeup: American Idol Gears Up for Unprecedented Change in New Season

American Idol to make major shakeup to new season in nod to fan-favorite judge Carrie Underwood

It’s the ‘first time ever’ a change like this has been made to the long-running show

AMERICAN Idol is set to make a major shakeup to the upcoming season – and the new move is a nod to judge Carrie Underwood, The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal.

Filming for American Idol’s 34th season is already underway, and when it premieres in early 2026, longtime fans of the franchise can expect some big changes they’ve never seen before.

Auditions for the upcoming season of Idol began over the Summer, with a bulk of the filming captured in September.

Along with newcomer Carrie, 42, returning judges Lionel Richie, 76, and Luke Bryan, 49, will also be back to look for America’s next best singer.

While the A-list panel of superstar judges will remain the same, other factors of the show are getting a facelift.

“The next season of American Idol will have all different kinds of shakeups and changes.

“The big one is Hollywood Week is going to look a lot less Hollywood.

“The Hollywood Week tapings will be at Belmont University. Production will film at the school’s Fisher Center in early November. They’re going to be calling it ‘Hollywood Week in Music City.’

“The show also filmed auditions at Belmont back in September and is returning after landing an overall filming partnership with the university.

“Special virtual auditions for Belmont students were set up for September as part of the partnership.”

The insider added that Carrie and Luke’s strong ties to the town and music industry in Nashville made the city a “perfect spot” to try out the new Hollywood Week move.

“It’s an unprecedented move, but execs think it will pay off and be a fun change to a storied tradition,” they added.

    GONE HOLLYWOOD

Typically, Hollywood Week is filmed in Los Angeles and is often hailed as the most grueling week of the competition for contestants.

Contestants who earned a golden ticket during auditions are flown to California from all over the country for what is essentially a music industry boot camp.

The contestants, many of whom have never performed on a real stage before, learn how to move around with a live band and in front of a crowd.

They are also given stern critiques from the judges in hopes they’ll take the feedback and improve throughout the season.

Long nights with little to no sleep and high-pressure performances under a mountain of stress have led to the time being a point of pain for many past contestants.

And despite the hard work, not everyone can continue on – as Hollywood Week is also known for its harsh move of dividing up the singing hopefuls into three rooms and completely cutting an entire group.

    BACK TO HER ROOTS

Last year, the special Hollywood week also made a nod to Carrie.

For the Showstoppers Showcase during Hollywood Week, producers chose to film at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown LA.

Who are the past American Idol winners?

The previous American Idol winners include:

    Kelly Clarkson (2002)

    Ruben Studdard (2003)

    Fantasia Barrino (2004)

    Carrie Underwood (2005)

    Taylor Hicks (2006)

    Jordin Sparks (2007)

    David Cook (2008)

    Kris Allen (2009)

    Lee DeWyze (2010)

    Scotty McCreery (2011)

    Phillip Phillips (2012)

    Candice Glover (2013)

    Caleb Johnson (2014)

    Nick Fradiani (2015)

    Trent Harmon (2016)

    Maddie Poppe (2018)

    Laine Hardy (2019)

    Just Sam (2020)

    Chayce Beckham (2021)

    Noah Thompson (2022)

    Iam Tongi (2023)

    Abi Carter (2024)

    Jamal Roberts (2025)

The venue is the same exact space Carrie filmed her Hollywood Week at as a contestant back in 2005.

“The Orpheum Theatre was Carrie’s first time performing on a real stage and being in LA so it has a lot of sentimental value.

“That was definitely a consideration when it came to the decision of choosing where to film for this season.

“It was the first time Carrie had been on a plane. The first time she performed in front of the audience. It really is what started it all,” the insider said.

The theatre is said to be very “sentimental” for Carrie – which led to an “emotional moment” when she was filming this current season.

The return to the venue marks the first time American Idol has filmed at the theatre since 2021.

American Idol’s season 24 is set to premiere in late Winter of 2026.

Katy Perry is reportedly far more invested in her rumored romance with Justin Trudeau than he is. This, in turn, is drawing concern from insiders. While recent photos of the pair kissing on a yacht went viral, sources claim that the former Canadian prime minister sees the relationship as casual. At the same time, Perry is reportedly hoping for more.

No one in Justin Trudeau’s world believes he is serious about Katy Perry, says source

As per Star magazine’s exclusive report, sources on Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau’s sides are painting uneven pictures about their romance. A source told the tabloid that Perry is “totally smitten” with the politician. However, Trudeau, though charismatic and attentive, is not looking to settle down, with a source claiming, “Nobody in his world thinks this is more than a glorified fling.”

Moreover, the Canadian politician’s insiders believe he is in a different headspace since his 2023 divorce from Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. A source told Star, “[Trudeau] has been very open with friends that he needs to get out there and sow his oats for a while, so the notion that he’d be pulled into something serious with Katy is pretty laughable.” Besides, people close to him have also described it as “a bit of a midlife crisis.”

On the other hand, sources said Perry was hoping for a deeper connection, because she “tends to get hot and heavy very quickly.” Moreover, she believes that the romance “has all the potential for being the real deal.” Naturally, this scares her friends, who think that “she’s destined for a broken heart.”

The buzz around Perry and Trudeau began in July, soon after her and Orlando Bloom’s breakup made headlines. Perry and Trudeau’s early sightings in Montreal and at one of the pop star’s shows fueled the rumors. Moreover, the yacht pictures off Santa Barbara in October sent the story into overdrive. Though insiders claim there is a mismatch between the two, neither Trudeau nor Perry has addressed their romance publicly.

Reba McEntire’s Surprise Engagement to Rex Linn They Were Engaged All Along! The Jaw-Dropping Truth About the Celebrity Couple’s Hidden Wedding Plans Is Revealed.

All About Reba McEntire’s Surprise Christmas Eve Engagement to Rex Linn (DETAILS)

Linn popped the question on one of the most romantic times of the year.

If there is anything more pleasantly surprising than first hearing The Voice’s Reba McEntire was engaged to Rex Linn, it’s discovering that the lovebirds have actually been keeping the news a secret for nearly a year!

Fans rejoiced when the two Happy’s Place stars confirmed their engagement status during a red carpet interview at the 2025 Emmys, but now more details have leaked about just how long they’ve been keeping this information private. In an October 22 interview with People, McEntire finally spilled the beans about the big moment that she and her new fiancé somehow have kept under wraps for nearly 10 months.

“We got engaged December the 24th, Christmas Eve at Leiper’s Fork [in Tennessee],” McEntire revealed.

How sweet! (Way to go, Linn — it doesn’t get much more romantic than a Christmas Eve proposal.)

As it turns out, McEntire had planned to announce the news to the world herself shortly after getting engaged, but the Palisades fires — which destroyed many parts of outer Los Angeles — put a wrench in that plan.

“So we got engaged then, we were going to make the announcement when we got back to L.A. in January, and the fires happened. It wasn’t appropriate,” McEntire explained before admitting, “The time never presented itself until the Emmys when it just happened.”

    So, when’s the wedding?

It’s the question on the minds of countless fans — but Ms. Reba said they’re in no rush to the altar at this point.

“I totally was thrilled to death,” McEntire said. “I asked him, ‘Well, when do you want to do this?’ He said, ‘Let’s have fun with the engagement time.’ So we haven’t set a date or anything. We’re just enjoying each other.”

Fans can catch the happy couple starring in Season 2 of Happy’s Place, the hit NBC sitcom that makes its return this fall on Friday, November 7, at 8/7c. As always, new episodes will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.

Look out Ms. Reba, you may have a little competition these days.

In an August 8 TikTok, McEntire’s fellow Season 28 Voice Coach, Michael Bublé, shared an adorable video of himself and Linn holding hands, lip-syncing, and being the literal definition of a bromance.

As the words “He told me we were going to jump together” on screen — a nod to a recently-viral couple’s meme — Bublé could barely hold back his smile as the two shared in the sweet (albeit goofy) moment.

“Regardless, Rex is my ‘Happy Place,’” Bublé captioned.

Reba McEntire said she and Dolly Parton have no plans to retire from the entertainment industry.

McEntire, 70, recently caught up with PEOPLE for the publication’s cover story. PEOPLE shared clips of the conversation online on Tuesday (October 21), and it will hit stands on Friday (October 24).

Reba McEntire Reveals Dolly Parton's Take On Retirement

During the interview, McEntire reflected on a conversation she shared with Parton, 79, when the “9 to 5” hitmaker appeared as a guest star on Reba. McEntire starred as the title character of the early 2000s sitcom, which also included Christopher RichSteve HoweyJoAnna Garcia SwisherScarlett Pomers and Mitch Holleman in the cast.

“Dolly and I have talked about that an awful lot, when she did the Reba show. And I said, ‘are you going to retire?’ She said, ‘why would I? What in the world could I do and have as much fun as what I’m doing in this job right now?’ And I agree with her 100%,” McEntire said in an interview clip that PEOPLE shared on Instagram. “I mean, we’ve got the greatest job. To entertain people, to lift them up, make them smile. So, boy, if I can find a better job than what I’ve got, I’m going to go do it. So, retiring, no. Slow down, maybe, but no chances of — and no plans of — retiring.”

Some of McEntire’s Reba cast mates have appeared as guest stars in her current sitcom, Happy’s Place, which features the country artist as Bobbie, “a tough but lovable woman who inherits her late father’s Tennessee tavern – only to discover that her new co-owner is also the half-sister she never knew she had,” per NBC. “They couldn’t be more different, but they’ll navigate this new life together… because at Happy’s Place, everyone is family.” The Happy’s Place cast also includes McEntire’s fiancé, Rex Linn, plus Belissa EscobedoPablo CastelblancoTokala Black Elk and Reba co-star Melissa Peterman.

The second season is set to premiere on November 7.

“To continue having fun at what I’m doing, that’s my goal,” McEntire told PEOPLE. “For Rex and I to stay happy, for the show to continue. How about a third, fourth, fifth season of Happy’s Place? I would love that. It’d be so much fun. And then to still have my music, releasing new music, or just to get out and to perform songs that I’ve been recording for the last 50 years. And people get to listen to those and sing along. That makes me happy.”

Reba McEntire told People that she’s “happier now than I’ve ever been in my life,” and that’s partially because of her current TV gigs.

“It’s amazing. It’s wonderful being 70 and getting to do what I get to do at the level I want to do it,” she told the outlet in an interview published on Tuesday, October 21. Currently in her fourth season as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, McEntire said she keeps coming back because of “how many more great contestants” the show finds.

“They find the best people. I am blown away every season,” she said before gushing over her fellow Season 28 coaches. McEntire dubbed Michael Bublé “a good buddy” and Niall Horan as her “little brother,” adding, “He’s cute, he’s funny, he’s witty.” As for Snoop Dogg, McEntire said the musician keeps them laughing on set with funny quips.

McEntire also credits Snoop Dogg with creating a sweet backstage ritual for the group. “What I love about the three that I’m with, we say our prayer before we go in. Snoop instigated that,” she revealed.
    The Voice Season 28 Coaches

    Trae Patton/NBC

Over 10 years after appearing as an advisor on The Voice‘s debut season, McEntire made her coaching debut during Season 24 in 2023. She continued to hold the position for Seasons 25 and 26 before taking a season off to focus on her NBC sitcom Happy’s Place, which premiered in October 2024.

Along with appearing on The Voice Season 28, McEntire is also gearing up for the Season 2 premiere of Happy’s Place. The show, which returns next month, stars McEntire as a woman who takes over her late father’s tavern, only to learn that her new co-owner is her secret half sister (played by Belissa Escobedo).

Season 2 will feature a reunion between McEntire and her former onscreen daughter, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who played Cheyenne on Reba. (Happy’s Place Season 1 featured guest appearances from Reba stars Steve Howey and Christopher Rich.)

“It’s just like there’s not been a day between the last time I got to work with her,” McEntire told the outlet about reuniting with Swisher. “And having Melissa Peterman on the show and Rex Linn… we are a tight-knit family, an acting team, and we have so much fun together. It’s natural. Anytime I get to step on that set, I feel like home. It’s my happy place.”

While McEntire is currently keeping herself booked and busy, she teased whether she plans on hanging up the acting towel in the near future. “I don’t know when. It could be in 20 years,” she stated. “I think I’ll know when it’s the time. Dolly [Parton] and I talked about that an awful lot when she did the Reba show, and I said, ‘Are you going to retire?’ She said, “Why would I? What in the world could I do and have as much fun as what I’m doing in this job right now?’ I agree with her a hundred percent. Slow down, maybe, but no plans of retiring.”

The 36-year-old made the announcement Wednesday morning, confirming to her fellow panelists that she and husband Justin Griffin are expecting a baby boy in February.

Griffin’s announcement came after she had opened up in the past about fertility struggles and her multiple IVF treatments along her journey. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg teed up the announcement by introducing a Hot Topics segment about embarrassing moments.

“I’ve had a viral moment,” Griffin said, before the show played a clip of an iconic September 2023 incident that saw Goldberg randomly turn toward Griffin in the middle of a discussion to ask if she was pregnant.

“So, Whoopi, do you want to ask me again?” Griffin said, with The View audience applauding and her cohosts getting up to hug her amid the confirmation.

“I’m so overjoyed,” Griffin said. “I went through IVF, it was hard, it took us about a year, it took us five rounds, but he’s here, he’s coming!”

Justin said from the audience that he’s “hanging in there” and “couldn’t be happier.”

“This is a big moment for our family, a growing family, I should say,” Justin said, while his wife made an observation about the addition of a new boy to their family that also includes two male dogs: “At home, I’m going to be surrounded by four men, and then I come here and I’m with four women every day, it’s the perfect balance.”

Griffin has long opened up about her fertility journey, including several times on the show’s companion podcast.

“My husband and I have been hoping, trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half, and it wasn’t happening naturally, so we made the decision to move forward with IVF. This is my second cycle, so, tomorrow I will be in the doctor’s office dealing with that,” Griffin said on the Behind the Table podcast in December 2024.

“I wanted to share it for a couple of reasons,” she continued. “I had no idea at my age how hard this actually would be. I’m only 35 and, to me, I was like, I’ve got plenty of time, this won’t be that difficult. I’m healthy, I work out, I eat right. My body was just not cooperating.”

“I didn’t cry, I didn’t have meltdowns, I didn’t feel hormonal swings. I think I got kind of cocky, because, the second cycle, I’ve been a wreck,” she added, noting that Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin — who also went through IVF treatment — helped her through the process. “I’ve not felt myself, I’ve been tired, I’ve been emotional, you feel uncomfortable in your body. I just wanted to mention it because, from someone who is surprised by how hard it was, it’s because all the stories of this that we hear is usually women on the other side, like, ‘Here’s my baby and, oh, real quick, it was kind of hard to get here.’”

It was a “Boy Meets World” reunion on “Dancing With the Stars.”

During Tuesday’s “Dedication Night,” Danielle Fishel and her pro partner, Pasha Pashkov, pulled out all the stops for a tribute to the hit series that kick-started her career.

The two performed a jive to the “Boy Meets World” theme song by Twenty Cent Crush featuring Phil Rosenthal. Fishel — who starred as Topanga Lawrence on the ’90s sitcom — dedicated the routine to co-star William “Bill” Daniels, who portrayed the lovable Mr. Feeny.

“I don’t think I would have been the professional that I am today without being able to have watched him all those years,” Fishel gushed ahead of the dance. “It’s been over 30 years since we met, and I know how proud he is of me. He really means a lot to me.”

The routine kicked off with Daniels, 98, standing in front of a school set that the “DWTS” production crew created just for the special evening.

He was also featured in the dance duo’s pre-taped interview package that aired before the performance, telling Fishel, “I’m very proud of Danielle for all she’s doing. It’s a pleasure watching you.”

Plenty of “Boy Meets World” stars packed out the ballroom to show support for Fishel and Pashkov, who received a total score of 29/40 from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli, and guest judge Kym Johnson-Herjavec.

In addition to Daniels, Will Friedle (Eric Matthews), Matthew Lawrence (Jack Hunter), Betsy Randle (Amy Matthews), William Russ (Alan Matthews), Trina McGee (Angela Moore), Bonnie Bartlett (Dean Lila Bolander) and Alex Désert (Eli Williams) were all spotted in the star-studded crowd.

Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter) was absent due to a prior out-of-town work commitment. However, he’s been to the live show to support his “Pod Meets World” co-host in previous weeks.

Also noticeably absent from the tribute was Ben Savage, who famously played Cory Matthews, amid reports that he’s distanced himself from the cast in recent years.

Fishel took to Instagram ahead of Tuesday’s “Dedication Night” to share a few sweet messages to Daniels, noting that she’s “still taking notes from Mr. Feeny” to this day.

“I feel such an overwhelming responsibility to give a full-out, joyous, celebratory dance to the man who is responsible for THOUSANDS of people becoming teachers and who has helped raise multiple generations,” she gushed in one of her posts.

“This dance is a dedication from me to Bill but I am representing ALL OF YOU who loved and appreciated him and his career for so many decades.”

Last month, Fishel and Pashkov teased that a special reunion could be coming while exclusively chatting with Page Six after the Season 34 premiere.

“If we are here long enough, let me tell you, we have something so unbelievably special planned,” the “Danielle with the Stars” podcast host told us at the time. “We need to make it to the [certain] week. So you guys need to vote for us! But we have something very, very, very incredible planned if we get that far.”

“Dancing With the Stars” returns next Tuesday for “Wicked Night” at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+, with new episodes streaming on Hulu the following day.
