‘The Voice’ Just Dropped a Game-Changing Twist

‘The Voice’ Season 27 Dropped a Major “Plot Twist” That Changes Everything Ahead of the Live Shows

The NBC series is heading to the live shows … possibly with more singers than folks expected.

We’re so close to finding out the winner of The Voice season 27 … but it looks like the show has one more surprise up its sleeve!

The hit NBC series is heading into the live shows on May 12, and it’s been some time since The Voice dropped a bombshell for contestants and coaches alike. Well, host Carson Daly decided on the May 5 episode that now would be a good time to share a massive plot twist that’ll affect the rest of the season.

Looking at season 27 coaches Kelsea Ballerini, Adam Levine, Michael Bublé and John Legend, Carson dropped the bombshell about a new rule ahead of the live shows called the “Super Save.” While the upcoming episode is supposed to only have the Top 8 compete, Carson shared that each coach now has the opportunity to bring one more artist with them to the final stage of the competition. Meaning: instead of just eight hopefuls singing on the upcoming May 12 episode, there will now be 12 performers hoping to gain votes from audiences in-studio and at home.

“We’ve always intended to keep the best artists on this show for the longest amount of time,” Carson teased to the quartet, per NBC Insider. “We’re going to allow each of you to bring back one more artist for the Top 8 live shows … the super-save is on.”

Upon hearing this incredible news, it didn’t take long before John, Michael and Kelsea voiced their immense surprise about what’s to come.

“Have you realized the stress you unnecessarily put on us?” John responded in shock. “They didn’t tell me I was going to be able to pick three all along!”

“How did you keep this secret?” Michael exclaimed.

“I’m overstimulated,” Kelsea added. “We love a good plot twist.”

Now, as of right now, folks have the opportunity to see Adam David, Jadyn Cree, Renso, Bryson Battle, Iris Herrera, Alanna Lynise, Lucia Flores-Wiseman and Kolby Cordall all try to become the next winner of The Voice. But after this unexpected move, we’ll have to tune in and see if any of our past favorite contestants will be back for one final shot at music stardom!

BTW, it looks like the coaches are excited to get more time with some past artists they had to say goodbye to. “[It’s] pretty awesome we get to do this,” Adam noted. “I love giving someone another opportunity.”

Well, we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for those familiar faces!

Given how much The Voice fans enjoy Michael’s music, seeing this piece of information had them over the moon with joy for him online.

“‘It’s Time’ is a timeless masterpiece ❤️🥹,” one person wrote in the comments. “😮 Stop it!? 20th Anniversary!?!? 👏👏,” another exclaimed. “Oh my Goodness, this is awesome. Congratulations Michael ❤️❤️🔥🔥,” a different follower added.

As some may remember, It’s Time featured some of Michael’s most famous musical hits he recorded. With tunes like “Feeling Good,” “Try a Little Tenderness” and “Save the Last Dance for Me” featured, perhaps the most recognizable song on the album is “Home” (which OG Voice coach Blake Shelton later recorded a cover of in 2008).

We’re super stoked about this, and we can’t wait to see if there’s even more music from Michael in our futures!

‘The Voice’ Schedule Shake-Up: What’s Changing, What’s Staying, and What Fans Need to Know

‘The Voice’ Announces Big Schedule Changes

As soon as the final five contestants on season 27 of “The Voice” are whittled down to one winner on May 20, 2025, the show’s producers will leap into preparations for season 28, likely to start filming within weeks of the finale. During the last two years, NBC has filmed back-to-back seasons each summer.

NBC has already announced that season 28 will include a big coaching change, with Michael Bublé as the only coach from season 27 returning. He’ll be joined by Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Niall Horan. But there are scheduling changes in the works, too, that could be a bit challenging for fans to navigate this fall.

‘The Voice’ Season 28 Will Get Squeezed Down to Just 1 Hour Per Week by November

The schedule for “The Voice” during the fall of 2025 could throw fans for a loop as NBC tries to squeeze in NBC games and its popular sitcoms, including the second season of McEntire’s “Happy’s Place.”

According to Deadline, the two-hour season 28 premiere of “The Voice” is expected to take place on Tuesday, September 16. The night before, NBC will air the “America’s Got Talent” season finale. But after that — at least for the remainder of September — “The Voice” will follow its usual format, with two-hour shows on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The schedule starts to shift in October. NBA games are moving to NBC, which means “The Voice” will begin airing just one night a week, with two-hour shows on Mondays only. There will be no recap episodes on Tuesdays, as has been common during season 27.

Fans will get even less of “The Voice” in November, per Deadline, when those two-hour Monday night shows get squeezed down to just one-hour episodes. Meanwhile, December is currently a bit of wild card because the NBA schedule set in stone yet. Depending on how that shakes out, Deadline reported there may be some episodes of “The Voice” that air on Tuesdays that month.

Although season 27 of “The Voice” got off to a good start with an earlier-than-normal premiere in early February, its ratings slipped significantly, according to Collider, especially after its biggest competitor — “American Idol” on ABC — kicked off in early March.

In February and early March, “The Voice” topped Monday night ratings, Collider reported, drawing over five million people per episode during its first seven weeks on-air. But by late March, “Idol” had taken over and in early April, “The Voice” ratings had dropped by 27%.

It’s not known yet how the May 12 and 13 semifinals did in the ratings, but according to data published by TV Series Finale, the first round of “The Voice” playoffs on May 5 drew one of the lowest audiences of the season, with just 3.5 million tuning in.

Michael Bublé’s Bittersweet Truth About Filming The Voice—Why Every Parent Will Feel His Pain

For Season 28 Coach Michael Bublé, competing on The Voice is a total blast. But one thing about filming the show is making him sad, and it’s something every parent can relate to.

In an August 2025 Instagram video set to Kendrick Lamar’s “United in Grief,” Bublé is seen in one shot fist-pumping out of excitement to be “back on the set of The Voice.”  However, the star then revealed the only downside of shooting the singing competition show: being away from his kids for extended periods of time.

After a few seconds of happy dancing, the video then shifts. As the words “Missing my kids” appear on screen, Bublé gets sad and looks despondent sitting on a couch.

Although the video is meant to be funny, the sentiment that Bublé misses his family is definitely true.

“I’d bring them to work with me everyday if I could,” he wrote for the video’s caption.

During a 2023 interview with The Project, Bublé gushed about the four children he shares with his wife, Luisana Lopilato: their sons Noah and Elias, and their daughters Vida and Cielo.

“They’re the greatest things that ever happened to you,” Bublé said. “They’re the best! They’re the greatest things ever, they’re my joy. The truth is, they just let me laugh at life and laugh at myself. It really puts life in perspective.”

Bublé may miss his children now, but he makes sure he’s never gone from them for too long. “My happiness is to be embedded with [my family], and they’re my whole world, so the truth is I wouldn’t be happy without them,” Bublé told People in 2016. “I find no fulfillment being that Hollywood story that you hear about; that artist who leaves his family on a search for the perfect career. That won’t happen here.”

One of the Most Successful Pop Stars Ever Is Returning to ‘The Voice,’ Giving Fans a Reason To Finally Care

Kelly Clarkson‘s return to The Voice is the exact update the series needs. With Clarkson returning to compete against veteran judges John Legend and Adam Levine in a special Battle of Champions season, viewers can expect a return to form for the vocal competition series.

With Season 28 set to premiere in September and Season 29 currently in production, there is no slowing down the vocal competition series. Clarkson will be the perfect balance between Levine’s strong competitive drive and Legend’s laid-back demeanor in Battle of Champions. Her positive energy and infectious sense of humor always make for entertaining viewing, and her vocal abilities are indisputable. This is the right moment to bring Clarkson’s brand of enthusiastic cheer back to The Voice, especially facing off against coaches who have already won the series themselves. It is guaranteed that Battle of Champions will bring back the competitive dynamic that made the series special in the first place, and Clarkson is the perfect coach to balance the mix.

‘The Voice’ Is In Need of Seasoned Coaches

Reba McEntire's chair on 'The Voice'

Clarkson’s initial departure came after she took a brief hiatus for Season 22 before returning for one last season before she turned her attention away from the vocal competition series and towards moving her daytime talk show series The Kelly Clarkson Show to New York City. Clarkson’s exit occurred at the same time that the series suffered the core loss of Blake Shelton after Season 23, who was the one remaining of the original coaches who had been with the series since the first season. Since then, The Voice has struggled to find the right balance between seasoned coaches and exciting newcomers, as the line-up of incoming talent needs time to develop rivalries in the red chairs. Season 28 will premiere on September 22 with returning coaches Michael BubléReba McEntireNiall Horan, and Snoop Dogg.

Each judge for the upcoming season is a skilled vocalist and entertainment professional in their own right. But each of them is relatively green when it comes to coaching on The VoiceOne of the best parts of the series is the competitiveness between the coaches, and, in the past, rivalries could span years. Clarkson and Shelton were known for their bratty exchanges on stage, and the friendly competitiveness was something many fans of the competition looked forward to season after season. While the current age of new coaches needs time to build up relationships and rivalries, debuting a new version of the show that reunites returning champions like Clarkson, Levine, and Legend is exactly what the viewers have been craving.

‘Battle of Champions’ Will Showcase the Best of ‘The Voice’

NBC announced that Battle of Champions will be a revamp of the program the audience knows and loves, with an update to the format and new rules that will bring even more excitement to the gameplay. A new twist has been added, where the coaches will be given the opportunity to compete for special advantages when it airs in the spring of 2026. CeeLo Green, a coach from the original season, will return to the series to judge the In-Season All-Star Competition, where returning artists from each team will compete for the chance to help the coaches win two places in the finale.

The series’ ability to innovate while remaining true to its core value of platforming the best vocalists at every stage in the competition is one of its strengths. Bringing in new rules and different incentives will provide exciting new attention-grabbing twists to the series, while the familiarity of the seasoned coaches squaring off against each other will be exactly what the audience has been missing. Clarkson will perfectly balance Levine’s rockstar intensity and Legend’s crooner charisma, as they all engage in the familiar competition of wooing the best vocalists to their teams. Though Season 28 continues the tradition of bringing back recent winners and competitive coaches to square off against each other, like McEntire and Horan, who faced each other in Season 24, or Snoop and Bublé, who challenged each other on Season 26, having veteran coaches return makes Battle of Champions exactly what The Voice viewership has been asking for.

John Legend has had enough of social media’s collective smart mouth.

“I used to be on social media a lot more than I am now. I generally post more on Instagram and some on TikTok, but I kind of stopped posting on Twitter,” Legend told Yahoo Life, adding that X (formerly known as Twitter) has become “a little too toxic.”

“After a while, having that much transparency between you and your audience — not just coming from you, but also coming to you — all the incoming [discourse], it was just a lot. After a while, I was just like, ‘You know, I don’t need that.’ And it’s truly better for my mental health. I just found it better for my mental health to stay away.”

Although “The Voice” coach considers himself “pretty unflappable,” he takes steps to care for himself mentally and physically and applies the “everything in moderation” philosophy to most aspects of his life, including diet, exercise and alcohol. The EGOT winner also partnered with Pfizer to raise awareness about the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the holidays.

John Legend gets real about rest: “I sing better when I sleep” | Fortune

Megyn Kelly said Chrissy Teigen looked ‘like she was literally going to the coronation’ at the White House Correspondents Dinner. John Legend disagrees.

“Some people feel like it’s controversial to talk about vaccines,” he told the outlet. “To me, it’s just intuitive. … I want to protect my family, and I want to encourage other people to do the same.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” Legend continued. “I think a lot of people have a general kind of distrust of the authority, or mandates or the establishment, and I understand that. What I tried to rely on is, I talked to my doctor, not any random person on Facebook. I believe if you listen to the experts, the evidence and the recommendation of the medical community is very clear. And I’d rather listen to them than a random average Joe on the internet.”

Chrissy Teigen’s past has come back to haunt her as previous targets detail how she bullied them online. Here’s everything to know so far.

John Legend Says Limiting Social Media Is 'Truly Better for My Mental Health '

Legend’s break from social media follows wife Chrissy Teigen’s on-again, off-again relationship with social platforms. In 2021, after a roller-coaster relationship with Twitter, the model and cookbook author left the social media platform, where she’d long reigned as tweetress supreme, citing a toxic environment that had taken a toll on her mental health.

“For over 10 years, you guys have been my world,” Teigen tweeted shortly before deactivating her account in March 2021. “I honestly owe so much to this world we have created here. I truly consider so many of you my actual friends.

“But it’s time for me to say goodbye,” she added in a follow-up tweet. “This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something.”

She caved and returned three weeks later.

It’s tool time! Tim Allen is reuniting with his Home Improvement costars in the new season of Shifting Gears.

Shifting Gears ended its first season on Wednesday, March 19, with a shocking kiss and many questions for fans. The ABC freshman comedy stars Allen as Matt, a widowed father whose daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), and his grandchildren, Carter (Maxwell Simkins) and Georgia (Barrett Margolis), move in with him after things get rocky with Riley’s estranged husband, Jimmy (Lucas Neff).

During the Season 1 finale, Riley decides to finally divorce Jimmy when he comes home for Georgia’s middle school graduation after announcing plans to tour with the Foo Fighters. Matt fights with his nemesis Eve (Jenna Elfman), who works next door to him and hits his car with his door. By the end of the episode, the enemies become lovers and share a shocking kiss. To celebrate Riley’s new singledom, her boss Eve throws her a party. Riley drinks a little too much, so Gabriel (Seann William Scott), her childhood best friend and dad’s coworker, takes her home. She wonders aloud why a woman hasn’t married him yet, and he tries to confess his feelings for her, but she falls asleep as he confesses.

This left the show on a cliffhanger with many loose ends not tied up. So, will fans get answers in Season 2?

The sitcom recently announced some very special guest stars that relate back to Allen’s first major TV role. Here is everything we know about the sitcom’s next season.

Is Shifting Gears renewed for Season 2?

Shifting Gears will return for Season 2. The renewal comes after the sitcom had a noticeable drop in ratings since its premiere in January. Shifting Gears reached 7.8 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings during its premiere episode, while the finale in March dropped to 5.17 million in the same time period. The show’s performance on Hulu has not been updated since January. The show ranked number five among ABC’s scripted series this season.

    When will Season 2 premiere?

Shifting Gears Season 2 will premiere on Wednesday, October 1, at 8/7c on ABC. The sitcom is expected to air on Wednesdays for the rest of the season. Season 1 premiered in January with only 10 episodes, but this seems like a full season pickup.

What could happen in Shifting Gears Season 2?

After Eve and Matt shared a kiss, the former enemies could explore a relationship. But Matt could also still be healing from losing his wife. Riley and Gabriel might finally tell each other how they feel — though this could lead to a not-so-positive reaction from Matt.

Dennings told TV Insider what she hopes for her character in the upcoming season. “I hope we see Riley do some exploration of who she is now because she doesn’t really know who she is now without the ex-husband relationship and back living at home as a mom with two kids, and have her discover her personality without the things that she is used to. I think that would be cool,” she said.

Who will star in Shifting Gears Season 2?

Allen, Dennings, Scott, Simkins, Margolis, Elfman, as well as Daryl Mitchell, all starred in Season 1 and would most likely return.

On August 19, Deadline reported that Allen’s Home Improvement costars —Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning— will all appear in Season 2.

Richardson played Jill Taylor, Time’s wife, on the show for eight seasons. Karn was Albert “Al” Borland, Tim’s friend and assistant on the show-within-a-show, Tool Time, from seasons one to eight. Dunning played Heidi Keppert, the Tool Time girl, from Seasons 3 through 8.

The trio will appear in Season 2’s season premiere on October 1. Although details about their characters are under wraps, Deadline reported that they will “help Matt Parker in an unexpected way.”

Richardson and Karn also appeared in Allen’s second sitcom, Last Man Standing. Jonathan Taylor Thomas had a recurring role on the show. He was one of three sons on Home Improvement. In Season 1, Nancy Travis, his wife in Last Man Standing, also had a guest role.

    Who helms Shifting Gears?

Allen, along with Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, and John Amodeoserve serve as executive producers on the sitcom.  Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully executive-produced the first episode. Pasquin directed the pilot episode. Dennings is also a producer.

The Sweet Way Reba McEntire & Rex Linn Are “So Adorably Cute” on the Happy’s Place Set

The sitcom costar couple have been dating since 2020.

Reba McEntire and Rex Linn have chemistry no matter when the cameras are rolling on Happy’s Place. Dating since 2020, the couple’s fellow cast members have gushed about their dynamic on the NBC sitcom while starring as Bobbie and Emmett.

“I love seeing them be happy,” Belissa Escobedo, who stars as Bobbie’s half-sister Isabella, said in an interview with NBC Insider about working with McEntire and Linn. “I can’t imagine how cool it is to go to work and be able to be with your boo. That’s really sweet.”

Pablo Castelblanco, who plays Steve, the bar’s germaphobe accountant, added that Linn and McEntire are “very supportive of each other,” calling them the “sweetest couple ever.”

So sweet that they make sure to squeeze in cute moments together between takes on the Happy’s Place set.

McEntire and Linn’s Happy’s Place co-star Melissa Peterman revealed in a 2024 interview with People that the two stars often look like they’re “on a date” during breaks on set.

“It’s adorable and oftentimes … we’re taking a five-minute break or we’re having breakfast or lunch and you look over and we have a bar set — it takes place at Happy’s Place — and you look over and they’re in a booth at the bar. And it looks like they’re legitimately on a date at a restaurant just sitting together being so adorably cute,” Peterman told the magazine.

Peterman, who plays Gabby the bartender on Happy’s Place, added that Linn and McEntire are “really professional” about their little moments on set. “It’s very cute,” she said.

In an interview with NBC Insider, Linn shared how he shows McEntire a little PDA on set. “It’s tough because we’re working. However, periodically — I know this sounds really dorky — periodically I will go by and kiss the top of her head real quick,” he said. “Just a little peck and then [I] just run off. Every once in a while we’ll see each other from afar and wave.”

McEntire smiled as she told Entertainment Tonight that they “work really well together,” while Linn said, “To come to work and laugh with your partner, it really is a dream come true. It’s a lot of fun.”

Since the early days of their relationship, McEntire and Linn have had “coffee camp” every morning where they catch up over a cup of joe. While the sweet tradition began over Zoom during the pandemic, the two have kept it up, and Linn has since added Happy’s Place rehearsals onto the agenda, as McEntire shared during a May 2025 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

“Rex is a stickler on rehearsals,” McEntire told Seth Meyers. “Every morning we have ‘coffee camp,’ and so, I’ll go get the coffee and he’s got a script. And I’m like, ‘Can’t we have coffee first?’”

While she might need a little caffeine before diving into a script, McEntire called Linn her “rehearsal coach” during an October 2024 interview on TODAY.  “We have a blast. Love it,” she said of working with Linn on Happy’s Place. “He brings me into work. He drives us to work and then takes us home, and he’s my rehearsal coach, so I rehearse a lot.”
