Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears Teases Season 2 Return—Here’s What the Latest Update Reveals

Tim Allen’s ‘Shifting Gears’ Just Got a Major Season 2 Update That Hints at a Return Date

Shifting Gears Episode 5 - Tim Allen gets a hug from Kat Dennings

Tim Allen is getting back in the garage. ABC has officially confirmed that Shifting Gears is returning for a second season — and now, thanks to a new filming update, we also know when it hits the air.

Season 2 of the multigenerational family comedy begins production on Monday, August 19, with live studio audience tickets already distributed for the taping of the premiere episode. That gives fans a pretty good idea of how quickly things are moving — especially now that ABC has locked in a Wednesday, October 1 at 8PM debut for the second season.

The show, which stars Allen as Matt, a widowed mechanic suddenly living with his adult daughter Riley (played by Kat Dennings) and her two kids, ended its ten-episode freshman run on a cliffhanger back in March. Season 1 built toward emotional and romantic tension between multiple characters, including a surprising kiss between Matt and his nemesis Eve (Jenna Elfman) and a quiet almost-confession from Riley’s childhood best friend Gabriel (Seann William Scott). Now that Season 2 is confirmed — and with a likely full-season order — fans can expect those storylines to finally pay off.

Though Shifting Gears premiered to strong numbers — 7.8 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings — the Season 1 finale dipped to 5.17 million. Despite the drop, the show remained ABC’s fifth most-watched scripted series of the season and found a loyal audience, particularly among viewers watching via Hulu.

What Will Happen in ‘Shifting Gears’ Season 2?

The Season 1 finale, which aired on March 19, left nearly every major relationship hanging. After spending the whole season bickering across property lines, Matt and Eve shared a kiss (following a fender bender and a tense graduation).

At the same time, Riley made the decision to divorce her husband Jimmy (Lucas Neff), who had returned briefly with grand plans to tour with the Foo Fighters. While Jimmy may not be sticking around, his absence has opened the door for Gabriel — who tried to finally express his feelings to Riley, only for her to pass out mid-confession.

With production beginning in August and a fall premiere locked in, fans won’t have to wait long to see how it all plays out. Riley and Gabriel could finally confront their romantic tension, which might cause friction with Matt. And while Matt and Eve’s kiss was played for laughs, it’s clear Shifting Gears is setting them up for something more complicated than just punchlines.

Shifting Gears Season 2 premieres Wednesday, October 1 at 8PM ET on ABC and will air weekly in its new fall slot.

  • Why Shifting Gears Isn’t Quite the New Conners—Yet

Why Shifting Gears Isn’t Quite the New Conners—Yet

The Conners’ Best Replacement Show Is Still Missing One Crucial Component

Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Dan (John Goodman), Becky (Lecy Goranson), and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) in The Conners

As ABC’s best replacement series for The Conners heads into its sophomore season, Shifting Gears still lacks one thing that lies at the heart of the Roseanne spinoff’s unique charm. Tim Allen’s latest series may not focus as much on class struggles, nor boast The Conners’ sizable cast, but neither of these fully capture what the sitcom is missing most.

Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears Is ABC’s Best Replacement Sitcom For The Conners

Kat Dennings as Riley Parker in Shifting Gears

While the two series may differ in terms of cast size and economic focus, their similarities become readily apparent when comparing Shifting Gears’ Riley to The Conners’ Darlene. Both characters begin their series broke, single, unemployed, and living in a widowed father’s house with two children, all while managing to keep their blistering sarcasm and curiously validating cynicism firmly intact.

Additionally, while the reasons for Roseanne’s death in The Conners were decidedly much different, both series address recurring themes wherein multiple family members’ ways of grieving put them at odds. Granted, The Conners addresses this reality much more thoroughly, benefiting from a larger selection of characters that allow for the show’s exploration of grief to take on widely varying forms.

In terms of family dynamics, the main differences between the two sitcoms are rooted in each series respective starting points. Dan and Darlene Conner don’t have to overcome the same years of estrangement as Matt and Riley Parker, so The Conners typically has to create new sources of tension rather than exploit pre-existing conflicts that were decades in the making.

Both families’ patriarchs also share an admirable trait, in that they’ve both had to learn how to set aside their opinions when it served their daughters best to let them make their own mistakes. However, Matt took much longer not to let his opinions about Riley’s choices cloud his parental judgment, making one difference between the series even more surprising.

Shifting Gears Still Hasn’t Matched The Conners At Embracing Family Dysfunction

Georgia (Barrett Margolis), Matt (Tim Allen), and Carter (Maxwell Simkins) in Shifting Gears

Tim Allen’s sitcom isn’t without its criticisms, and ABC almost canceled Shifting Gears despite the show outperforming other series on the network, such as Grey’s Anatomy and The Rookie. But one of the series’ greatest fundamental flaws is that the dynamic that led to Matt and Riley’s estrangement never actually appears on full display. It’s largely relegated to exposition alone.

Riley and Matt still bicker constantly, and they bring up serious issues like Riley not speaking to Matt at her mother’s funeral, but these issues are short-lived. By the time Shifting Gears’ high ratings began to drop, the Parkers have generally begun to approach each other with a stronger degree of understanding. As such, we never truly witness their dysfunction.

It’s difficult to accurately assess their character development without a real look at the seed point from which they’re developing. By contrast, the Conners have been outright abusive toward each other yet demonstrably found ways to come together as a family. Jackie beautifully references this in season 4, when Becky’s preparing to walk away from The Conners’ Lunch Box storyline:

Remember how excited we were when we were chasin’ the dream? We stole from my mom, I slapped Darlene, we bribed a councilman. And now you’re sayin’ that the fun is over?

That slap was tense enough to cause borderline physical discomfort, but it was also one of The Conners’ best episodes. Jackie’s throwdown with Darlene evolving into a wacky punchline illustrates that even the Conners’ most extreme moments of dysfunction never truly tear them apart. Viewers who find it relatable don’t often get to see themselves represented positively in mainstream sitcoms.

Why Highlighting Matt And Riley’s Dysfunction Would Improve Shifting Gears Season 2

Tim Allen and Kat Dennings as Matt and Riley Parker in Shifting Gears

Because dysfunction is empirically a way of life for the Conner clan, it isn’t entirely necessary for new viewers to have seen Roseanne to understand the dynamic. Shifting Gears doesn’t have the luxury of catering to anything but new viewers, so it’s substantially more important for the audience to understand Matt and Riley’s history of contentious interactions with each other.

Even at the beginning, when their relationship is its most troubled, Matt and Riley trade jabs with a sense of humor that doesn’t feel characteristic of the way they describe their relationship. Witnessing a real blowout would shed light on their exposition while also highlighting how far they’ve come, neither of which the series has accomplished particularly well thus far.

The catalyst for said blowout could also prove enlightening. We know that Matt and Riley’s estrangement seems to have begun around the time she started dating Jimmy, but a deeper dive could reveal how the relationship began fracturing before that. And setting up those old wounds’ reopening could even justify an appearance by Riley’s brother in Shifting Gears season 2.

None of this is to say a sitcom needs to be a clone of its predecessors to succeed. But as the closest thing to The Conners currently on network TV, highlighting the family dysfunction aspect of Shifting Gears could do wonders to appease audiences who found the Conners relatable. Given the nature of Allen’s show, that’s hardly an unworthy goal.

Ray, Robert, and Frank sit at the kitchen table eating as Doris fawns over them in Everybody Loves Raymond.

It’s been nearly 20 years since the last episode of Everybody Loves Raymond aired on CBS. Starring Ray Romano, the American sitcom followed Ray’s family on Long Island, with his parents living right across the street from them. While Romano isn’t the creator of the show, he has one condition if he were to agree to see a reboot.

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Romano reveals that he will only watch a reboot… if it’s not made in America.

According to the actor, he hesitated about the idea of a revival due to how personal the show was to him. However, after learning that the show was adapted in other countries, he is open to the idea of the reboot being made overseas as he likes the idea of interpreting the show using other cultures.

“I’m just a little protective of Everybody Loves Raymond just because it was very personal to me. I mean, it was based on my life and I was such a part of the creative side of it and all…. I actually like that it’s rebooted there because it just shows how other cultures — we’re all the same. So it’s good to see them appreciate it.”

Fans of “The Voice” coach Reba McEntire have something to cheer about, as her latest project has officially been renewed for a second season.

However, there is a catch: the highly anticipated return won’t be happening as soon as many of her fans were hoping.

NBC has announced that “Happy’s Place” will be returning to the network for season 2. However, when Deadline shared the network’s full fall schedule, fans noticed something a little off.

Reba on The Dream Role She Didn't Land

Deadline said that “Happy’s Place” will continue to air on Friday nights. The show will also be a key component of a Friday night comedy block in primetime, like it did during season 1 when airing with “Lopez vs. Lopez.”

Unfortunately, season 2 of “Happy’s Place” will be making its debut later than expected. NBC announced it won’t be included in the first wave of the network’s fall shows. Instead, season 2 will premiere on November 7.

As far as the fall 2025 schedule goes for NBC, shows like “The Voice,” the “Law & Order” franchise, and the “Chicago” franchise will all premiere between September 22 and October 1.

When season 2 of “Happy’s Place” initially premieres on November 7, NBC will air back-to-back new episodes. However, the network will eventually fill the timeslot after “Happy’s Place” with one of NBC’s new series, either “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins” or “Stumble.” Both of those shows are expected to premiere in December 2025 or January 2026.

In the video, the “Happy’s Place” cast can be seen asking, “How many days until the premiere?” The video then switches over to McEntire, who responds, “102.” It pans back to the rest of the cast, who reply, “Oh, that’s not bad.”

Reba also made her way into the comments on NBC’s post, saying, “The countdown is on!”

While others said the wait was too long and they missed the cast, another person said, “Can’t wait!! I love the show and all of the cast.”

Unlike Reba McEntire’s Bobbie in her latest hit series, Happy’s Place, we can’t pour you a stiff drink to help you relax after a long day of work. However, we can show you a never-before-seen image from the NBC comedy’s upcoming second season.

As part of Collider’s Exclusive Previewevent, we’re thrilled to invite our readers to take a first look at a Season 2 still that features both Bobbie and her younger half-sister, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), during a moment away from the titular bar. Today’s picture is just a sip of what’s to come when the title bellies up to screens for round two on Friday, November 7.

In our exclusive image, Bobbie (McEntire) and Isabella (Escobedo) are standing in a finely cleaned and well-kept kitchen having a chat by the sink. The former is zeroed in on what her sister is saying, which appears to be something light-hearted, as Isabella talks with a smile on her face. But, Bobbie’s death-grip on a bottle of wine leads us to believe that the smile might be a way of sugar-coating a much more serious matter.

Our exclusive shot puts the focus on the characters portrayed by McEntire and Escobedo, but the sophomore installment of Happy’s Place will undoubtedly welcome back many of the same characters to the story. We can expect another Reba reunion to go down with the return of Melissa Peterman as Gabby, the outgoing bartender at the titular pub, with Pablo Castelblanco likely returning as Steve, the business’ OCD accountant, and Tokala Black Elk as Takoda, the pub’s waiter.

Additionally, Season 1 did plenty to build up the blossoming relationship between Rex Linn’s Emmett and McEntire’s Bobbie, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for the real-life spouses to make it official for their on-screen characters as well.

‘Happy’s Place’ Big Season 2 Comeback

Happy’s Place was an immediate hit for NBC when it premiered last October, with audiences everywhere thrilled to see McEntire back in the driver’s seat of a network sitcom. The title eventually received the go-ahead for a full season order, pushing the debut season to a whopping 18 episodes total.

When it makes its way back onto screens on Friday, November 7, the second season of Happy’s Place will be doing so with a two-episode premiere, which promises to start things off with a bang as we catch up with Bobbie, Isabella, and the rest of the crew.

Reba’s 73% RT Comedy Will Change Forever After Character’s Massive Secret

Reba puts a protective arm around a young girl in Reba

After a successful debut season, Happy’s Place season 2 promises to up the drama as the Reba replacement delves deeper into Bobbie and Emmett’s relationship. Reba was a huge success for star Reba McEntire, proving the country music singer could double as a sitcom lead throughout the show’s seven seasons.

While Reba never earned McEntire an Emmy nomination, it did make her a huge name in the world of network sitcoms. As such, it was a welcome surprise when Happy’s Place was announced. The show follows McEntire’s Bobbie, who inherits a bar from her father after he dies, but must co-own it with her far younger half-sister, Isabella.

Asked about Happy’s Place season 2, showrunner Kevin Abbott told TVLine:

“We’re going to continue to explore the Bobbie/Emmett relationship… One of the impediments to that is that Emmett holds a secret. I’m not going to tell you what that secret is, but he has one, and it’s, I think, a very interesting one.”

Bobbie and Emmett’s Relationship Is Set To Get Complicated In Happy’s Place Season 2

The Second Season of Reba McEntire’s Sitcom Delves Deeper Into Their Story

Reba as Bobbie scowling and smiling while spending time with Emmett in Happy's Place season 1

Since Bobbie didn’t even know about Isabella, the setup between them was pretty complicated and contentious at first in season 1. However, as season 2 approaches, the good news is that Isabella and Bobbie finished season 1 on much better terms than the pair of half-siblings started. Of course, this just sets up a new drama in Bobbie and Emmett’s story.

Interestingly, Abbott told TVLine that he originally wanted Rex Linn’s quiet, charming cook Emmett and McEntire’s resilient Bobbie to hook up earlier in season 1. However, the prohibitively short 13-episode season meant that this plot didn’t have enough screen time to shine, so he instead opted to wait for season 2.

    Happy’s Place season 1 debuted on October 18, 2024.

On the one hand, this means that Happy’s Place season 2 can benefit from the chemistry between real-life couple McEntire and Linn. Reba’s lack of love interests in the earlier show was always an unfortunate oversight, so it’s great to see McEntire getting to explore this side of her character this time around.

Our Take On Emmett’s Massive Secret In Happy’s Place Season 2

Emmett’s Big Reveal Could Be Any Number of Potential Twists

Rex Linn as Emmett in Happy's Place

That said, it is hard not to get a little worried about McEntire’s Bobbie when reading Abbott’s comments. The showrunner is clearly rooting for the couple, as evidenced by his decision to hold off on their romantic moment for maximum impact. However, Emmett’s massive secret could be anything, and it could well derail their relationship.

Emmett’s Happy’s Place season 2 secret has the potential to seriously harm an otherwise promising plot.

If there’s anything that Bobbie needs right now, it’s consistency. She has just inherited a business and found out about a secret half-sister, so her relationship with Emmett is meant to be a reprieve from all this drama. As such, Emmett’s Happy’s Place season 2 secret has the potential to seriously harm an otherwise promising plot.

Happy’s Place Season 2 Will Feature Bigger Role For That Conners Guest Star, EP Confirms: “We Get To Branch Out A Little More”

Emma Kenney smiling with a yellow circle around her next to an image of Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman hugging in Happy's Place

Happy’s Place showrunner Kevin Abbott confirms that season 2 will expand its cast, with certain guest stars from season 1 returning in more significant roles. The NBC sitcom follows the life of Bobbie (Reba McEntire) as she runs her late father’s tavern, the titular Happy’s Place. The show balances heartfelt moments with sharp humor, creating a rich environment in which the ensemble cast shines. With Happy’s Place season 1 focusing on establishing the show and its characters, season 2 will bring back some key guest stars in more prominent roles.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Abbott shared that he intentionally limited the guest cast in season 1 to prioritize the main characters’ development. However, season 2 will bring back key figures like Maritza and Gracie, allowing the show to delve more into Bobbie’s personal life. Abbott also teased that more guest stars could appear, expanding the world of Happy’s Place. Read his full comments below:

Yeah, absolutely. Season 1, I wanted to keep the guest cast small. There’s only so much real estate for our characters, and I wanted our characters to have all the dialogue and whatnot, so I wanted the audience to get to know them. Season 2, we get to branch out a little bit more, and we saw Maritza, we saw Isabelle’s mom, we saw Gracie, Bobbie’s daughter, we saw Steve, we saw Chris.

Those two, especially Maritza and Gracie, are going to come back because I love the actresses. They were phenomenal. Their chemistry with our cast was marvelous, and the backstory behind them is going to be really interesting. I think there are stories to be told between Maritza and Bobbie and Gracie and Isabella. We plan on having them back. We plan on having a couple of other guest cast hopefully too, if they pan out. Some fun people to explore other areas of our characters’ lives.

What This Means for Happy’s Place Season 2

Expanding The World Beyond The Bar

Abbott’s confirmation of the returning guest stars suggests that Happy’s Place season 2 will go deeper into the personal lives of its main characters. With Maritza and Gracie set to have bigger roles, their storylines could provide more insight into Bobbie’s relationships with those outside her core circle. Bobbie’s dynamic with her daughter Gracie (Emma Kenney), who was deployed overseas and later returns to Knoxville to surprise her mother, only to be surprised to discover that she now has an aunt, could bring new emotional depth to the show, especially as Bobbie continues to adjust to her new responsibilities.

The mention of Maritza (Justina Machado) is also exciting. Her connection with Bobbie may introduce new layers of character development and drama. Maritza is the mother of Isabella, whom Bobbie discovers is her half-sister after learning her father had an affair with Maritza. Abbott’s enthusiasm for expanding the world of Happy’s Place also leaves the door open for even more guest appearances, possibly featuring familiar faces from The Conners or other sitcoms. By bringing in new characters while still focusing on the established relationships, season 2 has the potential to elevate the show while maintaining its humor.

Our Take On The Growing Happy’s Place Cast

A Promising Sign For Season 2

Bobbie, Isabella, and Emmett in Happy's Place season 1 finale

One of the biggest challenges for sitcoms is finding the correct balance between core character development and introducing new faces. Happy’s Place took a smart approach in season 1 by ensuring the audience had time to connect with Bobbie and the main cast before expanding its world. Now, with season 2 on the horizon, Abbott’s plan to bring back fan-favorite guest stars indicates that the show is evolving naturally while keeping its heart intact.

By expanding Bobbie’s relationships outside the bar, Happy’s Place can explore new storylines that keep the show fresh and engaging. Whether it’s diving into Bobbie’s role as a mother, showcasing new dynamics with Maritza, or introducing additional guest stars, season 2 is shaping up to be a compelling next chapter.

When TVLine hopped on Zoom with series co-creator Kevin Abbott in March, he revealed that it was originally his plan to have real-life lovebirds Reba McEntire and Rex Linn play a couple on screen by the end of the NBC comedy’s freshman run. Alas, “we only had 13 episodes originally ordered. We were putting some pieces in place, just in case, but we didn’t know if we were going to get a back order, or how many [episodes] it was going to be if we did,” the EP explained. “Ultimately, we got the pickup — a back five — after we’d wrapped the first 13 [and] I just didn’t feel like I could successfully build the relationship to the point where I wanted it to be by the finale…. When we get there, I want the audience to feel really satisfied.”

Five months later, when TVLine caught up with the showrunner during a recent NBC press day, he warned that there will be at least one more obstacle that stands in the way of their budding romance — and it sounds like a big one.

“We’re going to continue to explore the Bobbie/Emmett relationship,” he promised, but “one of the impediments to that is that Emmett holds a secret. I’m not going to tell you what that secret is, but he has one, and it’s, I think, a very interesting one.” Hmm….

It’s also important to know that the news of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune comes around the same time folks learned about an all-new season of the original game show. Viewers can expect to see brand-new Wheel of Fortune episodes begin to air starting on Monday, September 8, 2025, with Ryan and Vanna being the faces of that show as well.

Consider our calendars marked, and we can’t wait to tune in very soon!

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Complain About Show’s Summer Episodes

Jeopardy! Season 41 came to a close on Friday, July 25, after a dramatic game that ended Super Champion, Scott Riccardi‘s, streak. Now, for the next six weeks, the game show will air reruns from this past season to fill the void, but fans aren’t happy with which ones they picked.

The reruns began on Monday, July 28, and will go until Friday, September 5. Season 42 is set to begin on Monday, September 8. Fans will get to see Jonathan Hugdendubler, who defeated Riccardi on the season finale, face off against two new contestants.

If Jeopardy! fans still want their fix of the game show, they can tune in on their local channel and watch the 2025 Tournament of Champions and the 2025 Jeopardy Invitational Tournament for the next six weeks.

Week one (7/28 to 8/1) will show the TOC week one. Week two will air after that, and then week three the week after. Getting into the fourth week of reruns, the JIT will begin on August 18 and run until September 4. But that leaves one day left in the week. Jeopardy! explained what will air on the last day.

“Due to its length, JIT reruns coverage will end on Thursday, 9/4. The 9/5 rerun game will be the final game of Season 41, originally aired 7/25,” they wrote on their Instagram post.

Matt Amodio took the JIT win in only two games, so the tournament ended early.

Now, fans are complaining about the reruns being aired so soon after tournaments took place, and many say they would even prefer to see old Alex Trebek or Art Fleming episodes. Some are saying they will give the show a miss completely until it returns with new episodes.

No thanks, I’ll come back in September for the new season. I don’t watch reruns. Have a nice summer,” said an Instagram user.

“I wish James [Holzhauer] could play every day. I miss him #jeopardyjames,” wrote another.

“How about some old Art Fleming reruns from 1964- 1975. Interesting, would be if available,” a Facebook user said.

“What I would like to see is some reruns from years past with Alex!” said another.

“So we will see the same ole people who have been on a million times,” a third added.

“Since they tape five episodes a week, why is there a need for a big break like this for the fans? Makes no sense,” another wondered.

“I have seen every single regular episode and all types of tournament episodes; I’m just going to wait for the next season to start,” one fan commented.

“I think I’ll jsut wait until the new seaosn starts,” another said.

“I miss Scott [Riccardi],” a fan admitted.

“Personally I think during the season breaks they should run episodes from the show’s vast history. Play us some 80s episodes with Alex asking questions about the Soviet-Afghan War in a ‘Current Events’ category,” a X user tweeted.

“You should do reruns of episodes when Alex was host,” another wrote.

“See ya in September. I ain’t watching any of the summer reruns,” one last fan tweeted.
