Shania Twain Opens Up About Battle with Lyme Disease: ‘I Was Mourning the Expression of My Voice’

“I felt I had no other choice but to accept it — and that I would never sing again,” Twain says, in PEOPLE’s exclusive first look at this week’s episode of Sunday Today with Willie Geist

Shania Twain was once afraid that her battle with Lyme disease had taken away her voice.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive first look at the country superstar’s upcoming Sunday Today with Willie Geist interview, Twain, 54, opens up about what was going through her head when she underwent multiple open-throat surgeries amid her recovery from the tick-borne illness, which she contracted in 2003.

“I remember thinking and people saying, ‘Where’s Shania Twain? Where did she go?’ ” Geist remarks, in reference to the hiatus she took in 2015 to deal with her vocal cord problems.

“It was devastating,” says Twain. “I was very, very sad about it to the point where I just — I felt I had no other choice but to accept it — and that I would never sing again.”

Twain went on to share that during this difficult time in her life she “was mourning for sure.”

“I was mourning the expression of my voice,” she says.

Luckily for Twain — and country music fans — she was able to recover and return to the spotlight in 2017.

“Do you remember hearing your voice the first time you sang after the surgery and you felt like, ‘I’m back, I can do this again?’ ” asks Geist.

“It was little by little because the surgery is invasive,” Twain replies, noting that while her voice will never be the same as it was before, she’s learned to embrace the changes. “It’s given me more room to play, to be honest,” she adds, noting that she’s also a fan of the new gravely tone to her voice. “I think it’s kind of sexy.”

“I’m never gonna have my own voice again — I’m okay with that. I’ve found a new voice and I like it.”

Twain recently opened up to PEOPLE about how thrilled she is to be back in the studio and onstage.

“It would have killed me not to be able to ever sing again,” she said. “I wasn’t going to let my life be over if I wasn’t going to be able to sing again, but I would have been very sad and I would have mourned that forever. But it is a great love of mine and a passion — that’s what got me back on stage again, because I could. Now I have more appreciation for it than ever.”

‘The Voice’ Misses Out On Emmy Nom For First Time Since 2012 As ‘Survivor’ Returns

The Voice won’t get the chance to win its fourth Emmy after missing out on a nomination for the first time since 2012.

The NBC show has been usurped in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category by Survivor, which returns after missing the cut last year.

It marks a step change for the unscripted world with Peacock’s The Traitors also competing again after winning last year.

The other nominees in the category are RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Amazing Race and Top Chef.

The Voice has been nominated every year since its second season in 2012 with wins in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The show campaigned for its Season 27, which was judged by Michael Buble, John Legend, Adam Levine and Kelsea Ballerini. Season 28, which launches in the fall, will feature judges Buble, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg and Niall Horan.

Last year, The Traitors won the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, beating out The Amazing Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Top Chef and The Voice in the category.

It marked the Peacock series’ first main Emmy nomination – for its second season – with host Alan Cumming also winning Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program.

RuPaul’s Drag Race has been the big winner during the past few years. The series won four consecutive awards starting in 2018, having usurped The Voice and The Amazing Race, which previously regularly won the category, before losing out to Prime Video’s Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls in 2022 and coming back to win in 2023.

Survivor is back in the category. It missed out last year after the CBS show landed its first nomination in the category in 2023 since its 11th and 12th seasons in 2006.

The Voice to bring ‘BIG CHANGES’ to season 28 as the show has passed a major filming milestone.

THE VOICE will be bringing in some more changes to season 28 after fans complain that the show’s current format is ‘unwatchable,’ The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal.

Many viewers feel the way the singing competition is currently set up gives too much room for error of the season’s top talents slipping through the cracks and being eliminated “too soon.”

An example of this occurred on Tuesday night’s season 27 finale, when the Top 11 took to the stage to sing the Bastille hit, Pompeii.

The top 5 kicked off the performance before they were joined by their six former competitors – and a lot of fans said the talent was noticeably better once the others took the stage with the finalists.

That’s just one of many examples of fans feeling like the “most talented” singers are forced out of the show prematurely due to The Voice’s format.

“The show’s format is by far the show’s biggest obstacle,” a production insider claimed.

“It’s a tough recipe to follow. The blind auditions, nothing gets better than that. That’s the show’s bread and butter and what put the show on the map.

“Now everything after that? The show is still figuring it out as they go even 27 seasons in.

“Next season won’t be exactly the same, changes are underway and changes will always come and evolve. No two seasons have ever been the exact same.

“The show hears the complaints loud and clear. The people who make the show also want the best talent possible to make it to the finale but some of that is not in their control.

“They do the best they can,” the source explained.

    MUSIC IS A BATTLEFIELD

For season 27 of The Voice, the setup started with the show’s famous blind auditions for coaches Kelsea Ballerini, Adam Levine, John Legend and Michael Buble.

Each needed to fill 12 slots on their team – often times having to fight their fellow coaches to snag the talent.

To make things more complex, each coach was given flashy show advantages such as the blind audition “block.”

The Voice fans rage John Legend’s finalist Renzo was ‘robbed’ after Adam David makes history with shocking season 27 win
After the blind auditions, the show moved onto the battle round where the coaches pair two of their team members to sing a duet of the same song and a decision has to be made of only sending one of them through.

Again, this round is also given advantages as each coach has one “steal” and one “save” so they can either keep a team member they would’ve otherwise have lost or take an eliminated contestant from another coaches team.

The show then moves on to the Knockouts, where two artists from the same team perform against each other, but this time with different songs.

The heavily-produced show continues onto the Playoffs, where each coach is forced to choose just two of their remaining contestant to move onto the live shows.

Unlike other singing competitions, such as American Idol, The Voice contestants only perform live shows for two weeks.

Live shows then begin at the end of the season and the remaining contestants perform in front of a live studio audience at the NBC Universal lot in Los Angeles.

    SAVED BY THE BELL?

Another advantage was introduced this year – a “super save” which allowed each coach to bring back one eliminated former contestant.

The live shows then lead to the finale – which ultimately crowns a winner.

    The Voice Season 27 Coaches

The Voice has gone through many coaches in its various seasons. Some stay on for a while, while others only stay for one season. Here is who will be coaching Season 27 in 2025.

    Adam Levine – Season 1 to 16, 27

    John Legend – 16 to 22, 24 to 25, 27

    Kelsea Ballerini – 15, Comeback Stage, 20, 27

    Michael Buble – 26 and 27

This year, Adam David, who was on Team Buble, ended up taking home The Voice season 27 trophy – leaving fans shocked.

Fans have expressed their disapproval for how the series handles the competition now, with one saying: “I think what’s been disappointing about these recent seasons is that we barely get any episodes of live shows. To have a live show last week and the finale this week it seems so extremely rushed. I miss the older format honestly.”

“The Voice – worst format ever. Instead of all these auditions, battle rounds, knockouts… how about 3 audition ep., 2 battle/2 knockout ep. & the rest of the shows live. This way you get more than 2 performances out these ppl & you get ppl caring about the contestants,” another said.

While a third voiced earlier this month during the semi-finals: “12 people in the semi finals means SEVEN people go home tomorrow… Im sorry but The Voice really needs to tweak their format. 7 eliminations on the first night of live shows is ridiculous and insulting to these contestants.”

Season 28 of The Voice returns this Fall on NBC with judges Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Michael Buble.

John Legend was one of the four coaches on The Voice season 27.
Fans learned John will not be returning for The Voice season 28.
John revealed in March 2025 he’s exiting The Voice for season 28 to go on a world tour through the end of the year.

Although it’s been a month since The Voice season 27 aired its finale, we’re still ecstatic about Adam David winning the competition! But with the end of a new season comes a new beginning, as fans will soon realize when they tune in for season 28 in the fall of 2025.

As we all wait to see which new artists emerge from the NBC series, the network has already alerted viewers to which famous musicians will serve as coaches for The Voice season 28. With Michael Bublé returning to the show as a coach for the third season in a row, fans will also get to see vets Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg all come back and sit in the iconic red chairs. And while we’re thrilled to see them work together, we can’t help but think of the coaches who aren’t appearing this go-around — like season 27 coach John Legend.

Given how John’s influence on The Voice has been evident since his debut on season 16 back in 2019, we know there’s always a chance he’ll come back to the show at some point in the future. Regardless of this, viewers are still curious about why John Legend is leaving The Voice for season 28. As it turns out, he already alluded to the reason behind his exit — and it’s something pretty major for his career.

    NBC

Earlier in the year, John shared some news about what’s next for his career in the music industry. Posting a surprise Instagram post on March 18, the singer announced he’d be embarking on the Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour to mark two decades since his debut album came out. What’s more, the tour was slated to begin in late May in Glasgow, Scotland and end on December 9 in Oakland, California in the U.S.

“I’m so excited to announce that I’m heading back on the road for the Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour!” he penned at the time. “Join me and my band for an unforgettable performance of the entire Get Lifted album—the album that introduced me to the world—plus a few favorites from my career that *all of you* know and love … Let’s celebrate 20 amazing years of Get Lifted together!”

When fans learned of John’s plans for the rest of 2025, they immediately bombarded him with words of excitement for what’s to come.

“I’m in there I swear. I’m so excited for this to hear all the old songs,” one person wrote in the comments. “LEGENDARY 💫 [I’m] there ‼️,” another exclaimed. “This my albummmm🔥🔥🔥 definitely gotta go!” a different follower added.

Now, this makes sense as an explanation for why John isn’t returning to The Voice for season 28. But given how he’s popped in and out as a coach over the last few seasons, we’ll keep our eyes peeled to see if he plans to come back to TV soon.

NBC Reveals Major Hint About Next Season’s Direction for ‘The Voice’

Will ‘The Voice’ Continue Beyond Next Season? NBC Drops Huge Clue About 2026 Decision

Final preparations are underway before season 28’s celebrity coaches — Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, Michael Bublé and Niall Horan — arrive on the set of “The Voice” to begin filming the new season, which will air from September through December.

The coaches were announced in mid-May, and by early June, NBC’s ticket manager had opened up seats to tapings of the season 28 Blind Auditions, set to begin on the morning of July 7, 2025. NBC has not officially revealed details on any future seasons of “The Voice,” but its ticket manager just dropped the biggest clue yet that a season 29 is in the works.

Season 29 Blind Auditions Will Take Place in July

NBCUniversalSeason 27 “The Voice” coach Michael Bublé with winner Adam David
During the week of June 23, ticket manager iota released tickets for fans to attend tapings of the season 29 Blind Auditions, held at “The Voice” soundstage in Universal City, California. Free tickets are available for show tapings at 10:45 a.m. or 4 p.m. on July 21; 10:30 a.m. or 3:45 p.m. on July 22, and 10:30 a.m. or 3:45 p.m. on July 23.

The announcement does not reveal which celebrities will be coaches, but does say, “Music fans, rejoice: The Voice is returning for Season 29! Four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series ‘The Voice’ returns with the strongest vocalists from across the country invited to compete in the show’s newest season.”

This filming schedule is reminiscent of the last two years on “The Voice,” with two seasons filmed back-to-back. Interestingly, though, the season 28 coaches will have four days of twice-a-day tapings on July 6, 7, 8, and 9, while only three dates are currently set for season 29.

Coach John Legend, who just wrapped his 10th season on the show, explained the new schedule to former “The Voice” coach Kelly Clarkson on her talk show in February 2025, telling her, “The way we’re taping these days, we do two seasons per, like, summer and early fall. So even when you’re away, you’re really not away.”

Filming Blind Auditions in July Can Create Long Process for Contestants

Tyler Golden/NBCJadyn Cree, Renzo, Lucia Flores-Wiseman, Jaelen Johnston, Adam David
While the filming schedule might be beneficial to the coaches, it can make for a very long road for the contestants. Season 27 runner-up Jaelen Johnston revealed in mid-June that he competed on “The Voice” for nearly two years.

While speaking to the Chamber of Commerce in his hometown of Derby, Kansas, the 22-year-old said that he earned an “open audition call back” in September 2023, which led to about “15 more Zoom calls,” before he was flown to Los Angeles to prepare for the season 27 Blind Auditions, which were held in July 2024.

Johnston got three chair turns from coaches Kelsea Ballerini, Adam Levine and Bublé, and he eventually chose Ballerini to be his coach. But he couldn’t tell anyone about his successful audition, even as he returned to tape other rounds in the fall, since season 27 didn’t premiere until February 3, 2025.

They’re back! The star-studded coaching panel of Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé, and Niall Horan have all returned to their shiny red chairs to kick off season 28 of “The Voice.”

On July 9, 2025, as they filmed Blind Auditions for the new season, Bublé was the first of the four coaches to post a photo to his Instagram feed from the set — although he had shared someone else’s pic into his Instagram Stories earlier in the week and Snoop snuck a quick video of the crowd into his Stories.

The new season will premiere on NBC in mid-September, with Blind Auditions taping for four days, with the last set of auditions scheduled to start filming at 3:45 p.m. Pacific time on July 10, per ticketing agent iota.

Order in the courtroom! Night Court returns for Season 3 on Tuesday, November 19, and with it comes Wendie Malick as a new series regular in the quirky sitcom. Photos from the Night Court Season 3 premiere show Malick’s Julianne Walters getting cozy in Judge Abby Stone’s (Melissa Rauch) office, and accompanying the women are John Larroquette‘s Dan Fielding and Ryan Hansen in his returning guest star role as Jake, the HR rep with whom Abby shared a kiss in Season 2.

The photos also reveal that Julia Duffy will return as Susan in the first episode, reprising her role from the Season 2 finale (she was one of the many guest stars at Roz’s courtroom wedding). Duffy and Rauch are pictured above. In the image, Abby is visiting Susan in a hospital room, flowers in hand. Below, Malick is looking mischievous in Abby’s office and Dan looks none too pleased.

Night Court Season 3 Episode is titled “The Judge’s Boyfriend’s Dad.” Could that title, plus the photos of Abby standing close with former fling Jake, mean that they’ve officially become a couple in the new episodes?
John Larroquette as Dan Fielding, Wendie Malick as Julianne Walters, Ryan Hansen as Jake, Melissa Rauch as Abby Stone in 'Night Court' Season 3 Episode 1

    Nicole Weingart / NBC

The Night Court reboot stars Rauch as the Manhattan night court judge, a position her father — Night Court OG Judge Harry Stone (played by the late Harry Anderson) — once held. She convinced Dan to return as a defense lawyer in her courtroom after the death of his wife, and Malick’s Julianne has recurred as a spicy love interest for Dan since Season 2. Now, Malick has been bumped up to series regular for the third season, and she’ll be an adversary for Abby and Dan as the replacement prosecutor for India de Beaufort‘s Olivia (de Beaufort won’t be back this season).

“They both must contend with Julianne Walters (Wendie Malick), a reformed convict and former love interest of Dan, who is the new prosecutor,” the Season 3 description reads. “A sophisticated, savvy woman and accomplished attorney who also knows how to make a shank out of a spoon, she’ll keep everyone in the courthouse on their toes.”

Lacretta returns as the lovable and sharp-witted bailiff, Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous, a woman who takes her job very seriously and is fiercely protective of her night court colleagues. Nyambi Nyambi will also be back as Wyatt Shaw, the court’s clerk. He’s a jack of all trades and devoted single dad trying to make it all work as a law student at the same time.

Both versions of Night Court adopted a revolving door policy for its guest stars, which means that any guest appearances from any episode could always come back again (unless, of course, the character was killed off, but that hasn’t happened in the reboot so far). That means series OG Marsha Warfield, Melissa Fumero, Kunal Nayyar, Rhys Darby, Richard Kind, Faith Ford, and more could all be back in future episodes. For now, see the stars of Night Court in the new photos from Season 3.

At long last, Larry David is returning to HBO…again.

Variety has learned exclusively that the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator and star has re-teamed with the premium cabler on a sketch comedy limited series about American history. David is writing the series with Jeff Schaffer, who was the showrunner, executive producer, and frequent director on “Curb.” David will also star in the six-episode series.

Both David and Schaffer will executive produce the half-hour show, with Schaffer also set to direct. Barack and Michelle Obama are executive producing under their Higher Ground Productions banner along with Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.

“I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David,” said former President Obama.

Along with David, the sketch series will feature a mix of some “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actors and other guest stars, with exact casting details to be announced at a later date. The official logline states: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called.”

“Once ‘Curb’ ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party,” David said. “After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”

This marks David’s latest return to HBO. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” originally aired for eight seasons at the network between 2000 and 2011. It then returned for a ninth season in 2017, a tenth in 2020, an eleventh in 2021, and what was billed as the twelfth and final season in 2024.

“The characters Larry is playing didn’t change history. In fact, they were largely ignored by history. And that’s a good thing,” Schaffer said.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” is one of the most popular comedies of the 21st century. The show has received widespread critical and audience acclaim since its original debut. The show received 55 Emmy nominations across 12 seasons among many other awards and accolades.

“It’s hard to remember a time before ‘Curb,’ or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice President and head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Programming. “We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”

David and Schaffer originally worked together on “Seinfeld” before their collaboration on “Curb.” They also worked on the TV movie “Clear History,” in which David starred. Schaffer is also known for co-creating the shows “The League” and “Dave” at FX.

Higher Ground has set up a number of scripted TV projects in recent months outside of the HBO sketch series. Those include the Netflix shows “The Altruists,” about cryptocurrency exchange FTX, and a series version of the novel “All the Sinners Bleed.” The company is currently under a non-exclusive first-look deal with Netflix.

David is repped by WME. Schaffer is repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson. Higher Ground is repped by CAA and JSSK.

Not to mention there’s a brand new night for comedy. New seasons of “St. Denis Medical” and “Happy’s Place” will premiere in November. The latter will remain on Fridays while the former will lead the new block on Mondays.

“The Voice” also returns with season 28 which features new coach Snoop Dogg joining McEntire, Niall Horan and Michale Buble. That show will air alongside a new competition series from “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon called “On Brand with Jimmy Fallon.”

“On Brand” finds Fallon starting a marketing agency (On Brand Agency) where marketing executive Bozoma Saint John will act as the agency’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Per the logline: “In each episode, the On Brand Agency creatives will work with a major brand in need of a big idea for a massive, high-priority campaign — from creating earworm jingles and unbelievable activations to producing the most quotable commercials and must-have merchandise. They will have unprecedented access to the client’s business before pitching their vision to a brand representative, along with Saint John and Fallon, with only the best ideas moving on to proof of concept and the opportunity to see their campaign brought to life on the national stage.”

A new comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe and Tracy Morgan called “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins” will see “a disgraced former football player is on a mission to rehabilitate his image.” The series hails from “30 Rock” showrunner Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means. Longtime Carlock collaborator Tina Fey will produce. Radcliffe was previously featured in Fey and Carlock’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” on Netflix.

The NBA will also be making its grand return to NBC after several years away. Once it comes back in October, most of the airing schedule will change. NBC’s sports slate is joined by Big Ten college football and Sunday Night Football.

Happy’s Place Season 2 may not return to NBC until later this year, but filming for the upcoming chapter of Reba McEntire‘s comedy is already underway.

As teased in a recent Instagram post, McEntire is back on set with the ensemble behind this series, including Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Rex Linn, Pablo Castelblanco, and Tokala Black Elk. While the team is fast at work prepping episodes for Season 2, though, we can’t help but wonder which Reba favorites could turn up as guest stars.

Created by Kevin Abbott, Happy’s Place is no stranger to Reba crossover as two key stars play series regulars with McEntire and Peterman, and Season 1 boasted appearances from vets Steve Howey and Christopher Rich, but we can’t help but keep our fingers crossed for more in Season 2. Abbott previously served as an executive producer and writer on Reba, which makes him eager to welcome back familiar faces.

When we caught up with the showrunner around Season 1’s finale, Abbott said, “We definitely want to bring Joanna [Garcia Swisher] in. We’ve been talking to her. It’s a matter of timing for her.”

Whether this will be the case or not in Season 2 remains to be seen, but as we gear up for the next chapter, we can envision Howey possibly returning as well as Rich in their fun guest roles introduced in Season 1. As fans will recall, Howey, who played Van on Reba, stepped in to portray Danny, a man who wanted to host a holiday party for his coworkers at the titular bar. Meanwhile, Rich, who played Reba’s ex-husband Brock on the former series, appeared as Maverick, a tattoo artist.

As mentioned by Abbott, Joanna Garcia Swisher is in the running for a potential Season 2 guest spot, but we want to hear from you, which Reba star do you want to see as a guest on Happy’s Place in Season 2? Let us know in the reader poll and sound off in the comments section.
