McEntire returns as a Coach for The Voice Season 28. Will she and Linn recreate this photo?

The Voice Coach Reba McEntire has been dating her Happy’s Place co-star Rex Linn for a few years now. Whether they’re having date night at Opry 100 or hanging out in McEntire’s Coach chair on The Voice, these two are always having a good time.

When we say “hanging out in McEntire’s Coach chair,” we mean that literally. Back in December 2023, McEntire (who was a Season 24 Coach at the time) was thrilled when Linn swung by The Voice studio and posed for a few photos in her red chair. McEntire hopped in the chair as well and snuggled Linn, making for a really sweet moment.

“Swipe right to see #TheTots reaction if you don’t vote for #TeamReba on #TheVoice,” Linn wrote on Instagram at the time. (“The Tots” is the couple name they have for themselves.)

Huntley from Niall Horan’s team wound up winning Season 24 of The Voice. But McEntire came in hot for Season 25, with her Artist Asher HaVon taking home the crown.

McEntire will get her chance at another victory when she returns to The Voice for Season 28 later this year alongside two-time winning Coach Michael Bublé, plus returning Coaches Snoop Dogg and Horan. Will Linn stop by the set again to recreate this photo?

In any case, you can catch McEntire and Linn together on Happy’s Place, McEntire’s new NBC sitcom that’s already been green-lit for a second season. Catch up on Season 1 on Peacock now.

McEntire opened up to E! News about her relationship with Linn, saying she’s open to marriage if that’s something he wants. “I’ve been married twice. After the second one dissolved, I don’t have much faith in being bound by a piece of paper or a ring,” she said. “I’m truly committed to Rex, so if that’s something he feels totally strong about, that’s fine with me. He’s never been married before. So if he wants to experience that, I’m OK with that.”

Reba McEntire is returning as a coach on The Voice season 28.
She posted an Instagram back on The Voice set for the Blind Auditions.
This is her first time back as a coach since she left The Voice after season 26 in December 2024.

Reba McEntire is back where she belongs — and she’s making sure fans know exactly where that is.

Fans of The Voice learned back in May that the singer would be returning to the show as a coach for season 28. Given her one-season hiatus back in December 2024, Reba took some time off in order to film her hit TV sitcom Happy’s Place. Now, she’s cluing viewers into where she’s at with The Voice, thanks to a new post on Instagram on July 10.

Uploading a photo of herself wearing a light blue fringed jacket, a black shirt, a large belt buckle and necklace, Reba revealed she’s back on The Voice set filming the Blind Auditions for the upcoming season.

“Back in my other Happy Place,” she wrote in the caption. “I’ve got my game face on and I’m ready to WIN 🏆 Just wait til y’all hear the incredible voices of Season 28!”

While Reba was elated to be back on The Voice set, fans were equally thrilled about the prospect about seeing her on the show again.

“Welcome back to the voice Reba,” one person penned in the comments. “Queen Reba back at it again. Love you ❤️❤️👑,” another declared. “Let’s go Team Reba!! Be telling those contestants how much they need to be with you. Brag on yourself!! 🙌❤️,” a different follower added.

Now, fans know Reba isn’t the only major star appearing on The Voice this year. Current winner Michael Bublé will be back as a coach for the third season in a row, while Snoop Dogg and Niall Horan will also return after their own times away from the show.

And if that’s not enough, it’s important to know Reba, Michael and Niall have all won The Voice over the last five seasons alone. Niall won seasons 23 and 24 with Gina Miles and Huntley, Reba won season 25 with Asher HaVon and Michael won seasons 26 and 27 with Sofronio Vasquez and Adam David.

Needless to say, we’re pumped to see Reba sitting on the iconic red chair where she belongs!

Reba McEntire Makes Rare Plea to Fans in New Video

Although country superstar Reba McEntire spent the week filming Blind Auditions for season 28 of “The Voice,” filling her team up with new talent, there was something else weighing on her mind.

On July 11, 2025, McEntire recorded a social media video — still dressed in the teal, suede jacket she wore in photos on “The Voice” set — to share her concern for the future of PBS.

McEntire rarely speaks up about anything political or endorse candidate. In 2018, she told The Hill, “That’s not my job.” She even inspired a 2024 “Saturday Night Live” skit about “Team Reba” being for everyone and opting to remain “undecided.”

But with a big budget vote looming in the Senate in July, the three-time Grammy winner felt compelled to step outside her comfort zone and show her support for the nonprofit Public Broadcasting Service, which she’s partnered with on TV specials for nearly 40 years.

Reba McEntire Says ‘PBS Needs Our Help’ & Hopes Fans Can Pitch In

In McEntire’s video, she said, “Hey, it’s Reba. From my appearances on ‘Austin City Limits’ in 1987 to a ‘South Pacific’ concert from Carnegie Hall in 2006, I’ve had a long relationship with PBS. Now PBS needs our help. In just a few short days, the Senate is going to vote on a bill that would remove federal funding from PBS.”

The bill McEntire referenced is a rescissions package that the House of Representatives narrowly approved in June, per UPI. It now faces a Senate vote; if the budget bill passes, it would include a $1.1 billion cut in funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which oversees public broadcasting TV and radio stations across the U.S.

McEntire continued in her video, “PBS has done so much for us — from children’s education to teaching us about science, the earth, and the stars, to the most near and dear to my heart, the incredible arts programming that brings the the power of live performance into our homes.”

McEntire asked fans to visit the Protect My PBS website and learn how to help “if you believe in PBS like I do.”

The singer’s video was posted by PBS and added to McEntire’s Instagram feed by the 55-year-old nonprofit, which referenced lyrics from her 2001 song “I’m a Survivor” in its caption, writing, “With gentle hands and a heart of a fighter (and your visit to protectmypublicmedia.org) … PBS will be a survivor. Thanks to @reba for this important message.”

Many Fans Thanked Reba McEntire for Using Her Voice to Support PBS

Many of McEntire’s fans noted what a big deal it was for the singer to use speak out, including one who wrote in the comment section, “I know you don’t talk about politics, at least publicly, and I understand why. That said, thank you so much for speaking up on this matter. 🧡🧡🧡”

Another person wrote, “YES QUEEN REBA!!! This video is awesome!! It’s awesome seeing Reba voice her support for such an essential service. PBS is INCREDIBLE. I will always voice my support for PBS, and I will 100% back PBS up.”

Someone else wrote, “❤️❤️❤️💯👋 our kids grew up with PBS. Awesome seeing your voice about it also”

A March 2025 national survey by the Pew Research Center showed just 24% of Americans thought Congress should remove funding from PBS and NPR, while 44% said it should not, and 33% said they did not know.

The country music artist recently called her relationship with the CSI: Miami actor the “perfect union”

Five years since they first started dating, Reba McEntire is still smitten with her boyfriend, Rex Linn.

Though the pair first met while starring in a Kenny Rogers film together in the early 1990s, their friendship did not turn romantic until 2020.

“Rex and I get along in every aspect,” she told Fox News Digital of Rex ahead of the 2025 ACM Awards, which she is set to host for a record 18th time.

“He’s a better cook than I am, so I like that, for sure. We love Longhorns, we love the cowboy way of life, cowgirl way of life, and we both got into the entertainment industry,” she continued. “He’s an actor. I’m a singer. I love to act. Now we act together.”

The “Rumor Has It” singer went on to call her relationship with Rex the “perfect union,” adding, “We get along great. We do argue now. We argue a lot, but we have fun doing that too.”

From their red carpet debut and their adorable nicknames for each other, to costarring on Happy’s Place, here’s everything to know about Reba McEntire and Rex Linn’s relationship.

Reba and Rex initially met in 1991, on the set of the Kenny Rogers TV movie The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw.

“We kept in contact over the years, we both know the same people,” Reba revealed during a November 2020 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “So it was just like good friends getting back together and having dinner.”

“Then we started texting and talking on the telephone and getting to know each other better during the quarantine,” she continued.

During an October 2020 episode of her podcast, Living & Learning, Reba revealed she was dating Rex, calling him “a very, very sweetheart of a guy.”

They went out to dinner earlier that year, in January 2020, and then grew closer when they started talking, texting, and FaceTiming during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s good to have a person to talk to, laugh with, get into subjects about what’s going on,” Reba shared. “It’s just great getting to talk to somebody who I find very interesting, very funny, very smart and is interested in me, too.”

During quarantine in March 2020, they started “Coffee Camp,” a daily call during which they would catch up.

“It was a very special relationship, us getting to know each other without any physical aspect to it at all,” Reba told Rex on Living & Learning in October 2021. “We’d talk in the morning, we started ‘Coffee Camp’ while I was staying in Oklahoma … We haven’t missed a ‘Coffee Camp’ since March 16.”

Rex replied, “I was in California, she was in Tennessee and sometimes my ‘Coffee Camp’ started at 3 a.m. but man I have never missed one; I don’t wanna miss one.”

When Reba co-hosted the CMA Awards with Darius Rucker in November 2020, she brought along a special date: her boyfriend, Rex. The event marked the couple’s red carpet debut.

“We’re both excited that he’s going to be there with me,” Reba told PEOPLE ahead of the awards ceremony.

Since their CMA Awards debut, the couple have attended multiple red carpets and events together. They even managed to keep it cute while dressed up as creepy Beetlejuice characters when they appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in October 2024.

The pair first met while appearing in a 1990s TV movie, but they have shared the screen multiple times in recent years.

Reba and Rex reconnected on the set of Young Sheldon and then went on to costar in the Lifetime original movie The Hammer. In 2022, they played a married couple, Buck and Sunny Barnes, on the third season of ABC’s Big Sky.

The two are currently acting together on Reba’s latest sitcom, Happy’s Place. The series follows Bobbie (Reba), who inherits her father’s bar after his death. Rex plays Emmett, the restaurant’s short-order cook.

“We’re running lines constantly,” Rex told PEOPLE about working with his longtime girlfriend. “But every once in a while, I’ll sneak by for a quick kiss, just a peck on the cheek and keep on moving. It’s fun.”

Rex calls Reba “tater tot” — a pet name that started their very first dinner after reuniting.

“On the menu was tater tots, and I just went nuts because I love tater tots. Rex is famous for giving people nicknames, and he said, ‘That’s yours,’ ” Reba recalled on Living & Learning.

“My nicknames are legendary. They stick with people, but I never premeditate them,” Rex explained. “They always have to present themselves, and that was the perfect moment.”

Reba is “tater tot,” while Rex is “sugar tot” — a nickname that Reba’s sister, Susie, originally suggested.

“When we were in quarantine, I was in Oklahoma, there on the home place and Rex had [started] calling me tater tot. Susie said, ‘Tater tot, well why don’t you just call him sugar tot?’ and so it stuck,” the singer said while co-hosting Today with Hoda & Jenna in April 2023. “So, we’re the tots. Sugar and tater. Pretty silly, but we love it.”

Reba and Rex have known each other since the early ’90s, but they reconnected after the death of Reba’s mother, Jacqueline.

“In 2020 when Mama got sick, he called me,” she said on Today in October 2021. “We’d gotten to see each other before because we’re both on Young Sheldon. So starting in March of 2020, we just kept talking and visiting and finally got together, see each other in June.”

“And we’ve been pretty much inseparable ever since,” she added.

Dolly Parton is ready to take Kelly Clarkson under her wing and help her get through a dark time as she struggles with juggling the pressures of fame and her personal life, according to a source.

The “Because of You” singer, 43, is “in a bad place right now” after canceling her first two Las Vegas residency shows at Caesars Palace, and Parton, 79, is “very worried” as she tries to “get to the bottom of what’s wrong,” the source exclusively tells Star.

“Dolly’s calling and checking in with Kelly and offering support,” the source continues. “She wants to get together and have a talk, just the two of them, without any interruptions.”

The “Jolene” songstress has even invited Clarkson out to her farm in Tennessee and “hopes” she takes her up on her offer soon “because this can’t go on,” the source says.

“Dolly wants to give Kelly some country comforting,” adds the source, “[and] also just give her some serious pep talks on how to handle the pressure cooker of fame and learn to delegate more.”

Clarkson’s friends have realized that she’s “stretching herself too thin and trying to do it all, plus be a parent” to her and ex-husband Brandon Blackstock’s kids, River Rose, 11, and Remington Alexander, 9, following their 2020 split. Despite having finalized their divorce in 2022, she is still “extremely emotional and affected” by it, per the source, and Parton “wants to be there for her.”

As Star previously reported, the “Stronger” artist recently faced considerable backlash from fans after canceling her July 4th Vegas show less than two hours before she was set to hit the stage. That same day, she explained that she did so to avoid risking damage to her vocal cords.

“The show is truly incredible. The musicians and singers are outstanding, and I want us all to start out strong,” she said on Instagram at the time. “I can’t wait to be back next weekend and show y’all what we’ve been working on.”

Fans flooded the comments section with criticism for her decision to make a last-minute announcement as many people flew in from out of town and were already at the venue when the show was canceled.

“I’m literally here in a homemade Kelly Clarkson T-shirt. I spent $700 on flights and $1,000 on [the] hotel,” one upset fan wrote, and another said, “I wish you would’ve done this sooner than 15 mins before doors opening.”

Earlier this month, a staffer who works on The Kelly Clarkson Show said “the whiplash is a lot” with the singer right now.

“She’s all in on the talk show, then she’s not, then she is again,” the staffer told the Daily Mail. “She’s performing in Vegas, now she’s not. It’s her voice. It’s personal issues. It’s enough to make you crazy.”

Dolly Parton has revealed she’s stepping back from songwriting in the wake of her husband Carl Dean’s death on March 3, sharing that she’s not yet ready to embrace the deep emotions that writing brings.

The country legend opened up about her decision during an appearance on Khloé Kardashian’s Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, where she reflected on her creative process and how grief has affected it.

“My husband passed away three months ago… Several things I’ve wanted to start, but I can’t do it. I will later, but I’m just coming up with such wonderful, beautiful ideas. But I think I won’t finish it.”

Parton continued, “I can’t do it right now because I’ve got so many other things that I can’t afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now. So there are times like that, things like that that will start here a little bit, but I’ll write something else, though, if it comes. So I’m just putting that all on hold.”

Parton also spoke passionately about her lifelong love for songwriting, calling it her “joy” despite being her career. “It happens just to be my job, but it is also my joy,” she said.

Dean passed away in March at age 82. The couple shared one of music’s most enduring love stories, having first met outside a Nashville laundromat the day Parton arrived in the city to pursue her dreams. They married two years later and stayed together for more than six decades.

“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” Parton wrote on social media following his death. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Despite the hiatus, Parton has stayed busy with projects including her Dolly: An Original Musical and various philanthropic ventures. Still, she made it clear that when the time is right, her pen will find its way back to paper.

“Everything begins with a story or a song… I think that’s one of the reasons I love to write, because I feel like I’m so connected to God right then,” she said.

Voice Fans Alarmed as Kelsea Ballerini Rushes Back to Work After Battling Illness Post-Season.

‘Voice’ Coach Rocks New Gig Despite Desperately Wanting a Break

Kelsea Ballerini was planning to take the summer off after balancing a big tour and her role as a judge on “The Voice.”

That is, until Austin City Limits came calling!

Kelsea Ballerini Joins Austin City Limits Season 51

Kelsea Ballerini made a swift pivot when ACL asked her to be on the show, hopping a flight to Texas for a performance that will air in “Austin City Limits’” 51st season.

It’s the first time Ballerini has ever appeared on “Austin City Limits.” The iconic show is the longest-running music series in America. It has aired weekly on PBS since 1974.

Kelsea took fans lucky enough to be in the audience through her music catalog, performing everything from “Peter Pan” from her first album to one of her latest hits, “Cowboys Cry Too.”

She also treated fans to a run of her best breakup songs, including “Hole in the Bottle” and “Penthouse.”

For the unfamiliar, “Austin City Limits” typically features the performer not just singing but also talking to the audience, giving insights into songs and the stories behind them.

True to that formula, Kelsea shared with the audience, happily telling them about the “sweet chapter” she’s in now, and how much she “loves love.”

Kelsea Ballerini Comforts Fans In Wake of Texas Flooding

Kelsea Ballerini taped her episode of “Austin City Limits” on July 10, just days after the tragic flooding in Texas that killed more than 150 people.

The singer took time out of her set to offer comfort and support to the audience in the wake of the tragedy.

But according to Taste of Country, the “Patterns” singer also used her music to bring light and lift the mood, launching into a series of belt-it-out anthems that had the crowd singing along.

Kelsea Ballerini Has Been Serious About Getting a Vacation

Other than her pivot to be part of “Austin City Limits” 51st season, Kelsea Ballerini has mostly stayed true to her vow to take a break this summer.

In an appearance on  “TODAY with Jenna & Friends” in May, Kelsea said, “I need a break! And I’ve never been able to say that before, but I really think it’s just time for me to pump the brakes, figure out what’s next, have a summer, what? Go to the beach? Huh? Learn to cook a new meal, hang out with the dogs. So that’s kind of my agenda.”

And Kelsea has definitely found time to work in a little fun and adventure.

Kelsea Ballerini Filling in for Coach Kelly Clarkson on The Voice

On her Instagram account, the singer recently posted a series of pictures and videos from a last-minute “girls trip” to Paris. The post shows the trio flying first class, enjoying outdoor cafes, fine dining and even playing Yatzy on the grass near the base of the Eiffel Tower.

In the post’s caption, Kelsea writes, “impulsive 3 night girls trip to paris just added 927368 years to my life, approx 7 blisters to my feet, and an undisclosed amount of happy tears (and champagne)🥐🚤🥂👡❤️”

    Kelsea Ballerini Plans Australian Tour

While Kelsea Ballerini will not return to “The Voice” as a coach for season 28, she is going back on tour.

The singer announced a mini-tour of Australia coming up this December.

And she’s not ruling out a return to “The Voice” in the future.

In the appearance on  “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” she said, “Never say never. It’s been such a beautiful season of doing things that are out of my comfort zone and bigger than I’ve ever done, and it’s been really fulfilling. I love being in that seat.”

While they were there, the social media account for NBC’s “The Voice” posted video footage of Horan returning to the set days earlier to begin filming season 28.

Horan has made very few public appearances since completing his world tour and the tragic October death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, so his fans were over the moon to see Horan looking healthy and happy twice in one day.

In “The Voice” video posted on the show’s social media accounts on July 13, the back of Horan’s red chair is seen with his name on the back. He then walks out onto the set smiling as an audio clip from “Love Island USA” hilariously plays in the background, with the narrator stating, “A hot new bombshell enters the villa.”

No audio from the set was included in the video, but it’s clear that the studio audience, there for a taping of the season 28 Blind Auditions, were cheering wildly for Horan as he took his seat with fellow coaches Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Michael Bublé. Horan hasn’t been on the NBC show since he first appeared as a coach on seasons 23 and 24. Season 28 will premiere in mid-September.

Fans were thrilled to catch a glimpse of Horan on the set, where the coaches spent July 7 – 10 filming Blind Auditions, and filled the comment section with reactions. Even Horan responded, writing, “#TEAMNIALL,” which drew nearly 3,000 likes.

One fan declared, “Our King is back! #TeamNiall 🔥” while another wrote, “Team Niall all the way 🙌”

“Screaming crying fan girling I missed team Niall,” another diehard fan confessed, and another insisted, “That’s my husband”

McEntire and Bublé. had posted content from behind-the-scenes days earlier, so other fans expressed relief at getting a glimpse of Horan, including one who wrote, “FINALLY! been waiting for the Coach Niall content 🔥”

Season 28 of The Voice is officially underway! While the show doesn’t premiere until the fall, the coaches are hard at work filming the pre-taped portions of the competition, and Reba McEntire and Michael Bublé are giving a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on.

Both Season 28 coaches shared photos of themselves back in their big red chairs for the Blind Auditions. “I’m back in the big red chair!” Bublé wrote. “And no joke, I smashed my button so hard yesterday that it broke. 😎 The talent on season 28 is 🔥 #TeamBublé @nbcthevoice.”

In her post, McEntire referenced her other NBC show, Happy’s Placewriting, “Back in my other Happy Place. I’ve got my game face on and I’m ready to WIN 🏆 Just wait til y’all hear the incredible voices of Season 28!”

This is Bublé’s third season in a row as a coach. He earned back-to-back wins in his first two seasons on the show, and is looking to make it a three-peat, which hasn’t been done since Blake Shelton took home wins in Seasons 2, 3, and 4.

Meanwhile, McEntire is back for her fourth season after taking a break for Season 27. She has one win under her belt with Asher HaVon from Season 25. Niall Horan was previously a judge during Seasons 23 and 24, both of which he won, but Season 28 will be his first time back in two years. Finally, Snoop Dogg will be looking for his first-ever win this year after previously coaching during Season 26.

An official premiere date for Season 28 has not been confirmed yet. However, we know that the show is coming back in the fall. In the month of September, it will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. and Tuesdays at 8 p.m., for two hours both nights. However, when the NBA takes over Tuesday nights in October, The Voice will switch to a Monday only schedule.

  • Shifting Gears Getting Canceled? The sitcom set a six-year viewership record Despite this accomplishment, though, season 2 might not happen

Shifting Gears Getting Canceled? The sitcom set a six-year viewership record Despite this accomplishment, though, season 2 might not happen

Shifting Gears Getting Canceled? This Doesn’t Make Sense, ABC

Cast of Shifting Gears Behind Tim Allen

After a successful debut for Shifting Gears, season 2 appeared to be a lock for the series — until now. Tim Allen’s comeback sitcom revolves around Allen’s Matt Parker, a widower who runs an auto restoration shop. At the beginning of Shifting Gears, Matt reconnects with his estranged daughter, Riley Parker (played by Kat Dennings), who asks him if she and her two children can move in with him. Riley and her husband are getting divorced, and she has nowhere else to turn to. So, Matt agrees, kicking off the show’s story, which seemed like it could continue for many seasons.

While waiting for season 2 renewal news, fans can catch up on all 10 episodes of Shifting Gears season 1 on Hulu.

The sitcom’s likely cancelation is shocking because it had an amazing start in January 2025. Shifting Gears set a six-year viewership record for ABC — its pilot was the most-watched series premiere for ABC since The Conners in October 2018. The first episode garnered 16.95 million views following a week of cross-platform viewing on ABC, Hulu, Disney+, and digital platforms. The Shifting Gears premiere’s viewership totals earned a 173% increase over the comedy show’s original Live+Same Day ratings, which added up to 6.2 million. Despite this accomplishment, though, season 2 might not happen.

Shifting Gears Is Reportedly On The Bubble For Renewal

    Season 2 Isn’t A Guarantee

According to DeadlineShifting Gears‘ season 2 renewal is up in the air instead of a slam dunk. The report describes its status as “heavily on the bubble.” Whereas other ABC TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy9-1-1The Rookie, and Will Trent are all pretty much a lock to score renewals, the future of Shifting Gears and Doctor Odyssey is more uncertain. Meanwhile, ABC has already renewed Abbott Elementary for season 5 and High Potential for season 2. 9-1-1: Nashville also has a straight-to-series order, securing its place on ABC’s 2025–2026 TV programming schedule.

Unfortunately, Deadline is seemingly confident that fans should be worried about Shifting Gears‘ future. Even though it set an impressive record with its series premiere, ABC is reportedly seriously considering canceling the Tim Allen sitcom. There’s a high chance that Shifting Gears season 2 doesn’t happen, which is about as surprising and nonsensical as any renewal or cancelation news this TV season.

Why Shifting Gears Not Guaranteed A Season 2 Is Baffling

Tim Allen’s Sitcom Broke A Big Record For ABC

Shortly after the Shifting Gears season 1 finale, many just assumed that a second season was a guarantee for the comedy series, despite ABC’s lack of a decision. The sitcom has star power — Tim Allen has proven himself to be perfectly capable of leading a successful network TV show (e.g., Home Improvement and Last Man Standing), and Kat Dennings is certainly no slouch herself, given her work on 2 Broke Girls. Plus, the Shifting Gears pilot breaking The Conners‘ series premiere record speaks for itself. As a result, the fact that Shifting Gears is “on the bubble” is baffling.

The network needs more comedies for the future, meaning Shifting Gears should be an easy renewal.

ABC’s indecision concerning Shifting Gears is even more confusing since the network is significantly lacking in the comedy department. While it’s home to countless popular dramas (like Grey’s Anatomy9-1-1High Potential, and more), ABC’s only renowned sitcom heading into the 2025–2026 TV season is Abbott ElementaryThe Conners is ending after season 7, which airs in the spring of 2025, meaning ABC doesn’t even have the Roseanne revival to fall back on. The network needs more comedies for the future, meaning Shifting Gears should be an easy renewal.

    Shifting Gears imagery

Sure, Shifting Gears is critically panned (its Rotten Tomatoes score is 47%), but the audience matters more. And the sitcom has the legs to grow a substantial following. Based on all this information, it simply doesn’t make sense why ABC would even consider canceling Shifting Gears.

Shifting Gears’ Ratings Declined Throughout The Season, But It Still Ended With Strong Viewership

The Show’s Ratings Are Still Great

Per the aforementioned report, ABC might cancel Shifting Gears because of its declining ratings. While its start broke records, the sitcom’s viewership has been declining with each passing episode. The pilot accumulated 6.1 million Live+Same Day viewers, but its finale only earned 3.8 million. Nevertheless, this isn’t a strong enough argument to cancel Shifting Gears.

Almost every network TV series experiences a ratings decline following its premiere, with some, like High Potential, being the exception. However, it’s unfair to measure Shifting Gears‘ performance against rare phenomena. ABC can compare it to Happy’s Place, though, which puts out similar numbers to the Tim Allen sitcom. If NBC can renew Happy’s Place, surely ABC can order a second season for Shifting Gears (especially if the network wants to ensure it has more than one comedy series in its future lineup).
