‘Happy’s Place’ Finale: Showrunner on Bobbie & Emmett Set Up for Future Romance (Exclusive)

‘Happy’s Place’ Boss on Setting Up Bobbie & Emmett’s Future Romance With Finale

Rex Linn and Reba McEntire in 'Happy's Place'

    Spoiler Alert

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Happy’s Place Season 1 Episode 18, “Alarm Bells.”]

Happy’s Place may be ending for the season, but it’s going out with a bang of sorts as the finale installment, “Alarm Bells,” sets the stage for romance between Bobbie (Reba McEntire) and the titular bar’s in-house cook, Emmett (Rex Linn).

As a real-life couple, McEntire and Linn certainly have the right chemistry to make this pairing work, and while Bobbie’s sister Isabella (Belissa Escobedo) encourages the arrangement, the rest of the Happy’s Place team works against it, claiming at first that Bobbie and Emmett could never be a thing before admitting the duo are definitely into each other.

The fear is that allowing Bobbie and Emmett to get together, could upset the balance of the team’s metaphorical ecosystem. But what sparks the debate, to begin with? When security concerns are raised at Bobbie and Isabella’s place, Emmett offers to help, but Bobbie’s stubbornness leads to a competition of who is a better protector.

When they turn to a shooting game at the local arcade, viewers get a peek into the simmering romantic tension as Emmett attempts to teach Bobbie how to shoot in the game. While no declarations are made, nor dates scheduled, Emmett asks if he can look in on Bobbie to make sure she’s safe from time to time, the implication being that he’ll be dropping in for visits here and there at her home.

With a second season to look forward to, showrunner Kevin Abbott notes, “The season finale was always going to be about that relationship,” but he adds that in the original vision he had in mind the romance “was going to be further than this.”

Instead, he’s holding it back for future episodes, and Abbott teases that it’s something “I actually love, that I don’t think anybody’s going to see coming… So that’s coming up in Season 2.” As for exploring this romance between Bobbie and Emmett, Abbott, who previously collaborated with McEntire on Reba, acknowledges that she may have had her relationships on that series, but that they were often failures.

“For whatever reason, Reba can do almost anything, but she couldn’t do that,” Abbott says of her onscreen relationships in the previous show, “and it used to bug the heck out of me.”

Now with Emmett, there’s a chance viewers could see longevity in their relationship. “Before we had [cast] Rex, I had incorporated Emmett as a possible love interest for Bobbie, hoping… and then when Rex came into the picture it was [like] maybe this is the key we’ve been missing all along.”

As Abbott puts it, “The sparks you see in the season finale for me are just delightful and wonderful.” But when it comes to mixing work and real life, he admits, “There’s a certain amount of trepidation… [but] right now it is working marvelously, the two of them. Rex could not be more fun to work with.”

According to Abbott, Linn is quite different from his curmudgeonly onscreen persona as Emmett as he says “[They] are not the same character at all. Emmett’s a man of few words. Rex will talk your ear off and he is just this lovely man who’s not grouchy or anything.”

Bobbie has Isabella to thank for the romance because, without her intervention, she’d still be dancing around the idea of Emmett rather than facing him head-on. “Isabella’s role is to open her up, to make her take risks,” Abbott says of the character’s purpose of widening Bobbie’s scope of the world.

Likewise, Bobbie is meant to provide Isabella with a home base support. “They will each feed something important in the other, and we’ll get into a lot more of that in Season 2,” Abbott promises. Stay tuned for updates on Season 2 as it takes shape and let us know what you think of the Season 1 finale in the comments section, below.

“Reba Is Beloved, and Justifiably So”: ‘Happy’s Place’ Co-Creator Explains Season 1 Finale and Teases Season 2

Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman reunite as restaurant co-workers in Happy's Place

Happy’s Place co-creator, Kevin Abbott, is a fan of a good old-fashioned slow burn. During the first season, which celebrated its finale on Friday, audiences watched as Reba McEntire’s Bobbie moved back to Knoxville, Tennessee to take over the titular bar that she inherited from her father.

There were plenty of surprises along the way for Bobbie — the main one being her first meeting with a much younger half-sister (Belissa Escobedo) who she didn’t know about.

As Bobbie settled into her new life, it certainly seemed like a relationship was beginning to blossom between her and the bar’s cook, Emmett (Rex Linn). But, now that we’ve seen the Season 1 finale, we can officially say that — despite the shipping of fans — Bobbie and Emmett didn’t take that plunge towards romance.

However, Abbott is here to tell audiences not to fear and that it’s all in the cards — he just didn’t want to rush a good build.

Speaking with TV Line, Abbott said,

That was the original intent — to actually have them a little bit further along than we did. That was an idea that I had from before we wrote the pilot, actually, but we didn’t go as far as that because of the scheduling. We only had 13 episodes originally ordered. We were putting some pieces in place just in case, but we didn’t know if we were going to get a back order, or how many [episodes] it was going to be if we did.”

‘Happy’s Place’ Hinges on Character Development

HAPPY'S PLACE -- "Acountability" Episode 114 -- Pictured: (l-r) Reba McEntire as Bobbie, Belissa Escobedo as Isabella

After the title landed a full-season order at the tail end of last year, Abbott knew there was time for the hopeful couple to build on an already solid foundation. Still, he didn’t want to rush things, so he hoped that NBC would renew the series for a second season — a wish that was answered last month.

Now, with plenty of time on his hands to mold Emmett and Bobbie’s relationship, Abbott tells fans that it’s on the horizon, explaining,

“I don’t like to just jump into these things out of nowhere. I want to build to them so that, when they happen, it feels right. Ultimately, we got the pickup — a back five — after we’d wrapped the first 13. I just didn’t feel like I could successfully build the relationship to the point where I wanted it to be by the finale, so this is going to be something we’re going to get into next season. We can give the audience something to look forward to without taking it too quickly. When we get there, I want the audience to feel really satisfied.”

Season 1 of Happy’s Place is now streaming on Peacock.

‘Fox & Friends’ Skewers ‘SNL’ Tom Hanks MAGA Sketch: ‘Wasn’t Funny’

“Fox & Friends” was not laughing at Tom Hanks’ portrayal of a racist President Trump fan during the “SNL50” special on Sunday.

On Monday morning, co-host Lawrence Jones said he doesn’t “censor comedy, but that wasn’t funny.”

Fellow “F&F” co-host Kayleigh McEnany felt the same way, saying “SNL” “must have gotten the script from Don Lemon.”

“Remember when he made fun of MAGA voters, or his guest did for not being able to point out a country on the map? That’s ridiculous,” she said.

Hanks played a man named “Tracy” who was wearing one of President Trump’s trademark red Make America Great Again hats while appearing on “Black Jeopardy,” but it was actually a recurring bit — Hanks played the same character on “SNL” before in a “Black Jeopardy” sketch in 2016. The original sketch is the second most-watched “SNL” sketch of all time.

On Sunday’s anniversary show, Hanks’ character also sported a goatee, a blue jean overshirt, and had a southern-ish drawl. In the sketch, Hanks is scared as Kenan Thompson approaches to shake his hand, putting his hands up in the air before timidly embracing Thompson. You can see that part of the sketch below:

“Jones on Monday “The implication of that last part… is that the Trump voter didn’t want to shake the Black [man’s hand],” Jones said on Monday.

Right-leaning media melts down over 'SNL' skit not long after saying Americans are too sensitive

“They’re racist!” co-host Steve Doocy chimed in, as well as McEnany, who added a quick “yeah.”

Jones said that, as someone who covered the Trump campaign for Fox News, that racist implication was false. “There’s a lot of love there,” he said.

President Trump, in last November’s election, won the biggest percentage of Black voters in 48 years for a Republican presidential nominee; he also won the biggest slice of Latino voters for a Republican in 52 years.

“I think one of the underreported stories is the Black voters are in poor neighborhoods, working class neighborhood, and the white voters in the Trump coalition, how they felt left behind,” Jones added.

While the “Fox & Friends” anchors were not big fans of the “Black Jeopardy” sketch, Doocy did mention that he found the first hour, as well as show opener Steve Martin, “very funny.”

Norah O’Donnell slammed over final CBS News sign-off as viewers call it ‘a joke’ & point to moment that led to downfall

ANCHOR Norah O’Donnell has been slammed over her tearful goodbye as she signed off from CBS Evening News for the final time.

The veteran journalist is leaving the network after 12 years as CBS launches a major makeover for its news programs.

O’Donnell , 51, said her main anchor position, which she held since 2019, was the “honor of a lifetime” in an emotional goodbye on Thursday night.

“It has been an incredible five and a half years,” O’Donnell said.

However, some viewers quickly blasted the anchor on her way out and accused her of being biased against President Donald Trump.

“Nora, seriously, you are not a journalist. You are a joke,” one X user wrote in response to a video of her sentimental farewell.

“CBS is unwatchable. So so biased. Very disappointing,” another slammed.

Another accused her of being “biased and mean.”

Other CBS viewers recalled the vice presidential debate, which was moderated by O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan.

They insisted this was the moment that led to O’Donnell’s undoing as the face of the evening program.

“Norah O’Donnell is leaving the CBS Evening News after tonight’s broadcast,” one X user wrote on Thursday.

“Leave and don’t come back. You disgraced yourself during the VP debate.”

Another raged, “So disappointed in Margaret since the debate! Along with Norah O’Donnell. Blatantly biased against Trump.”

A third added, “I’m glad she is gone! I have not turned on [CBS News] since debate! She was a mouth piece for Democrats not real news.”

“Her disgraceful behavior as a debate moderator made me question whether she was like that about everything,” another wrote.

“Newsroom reform would be a wonderful thing, but I don’t expect to see it.”

    Norah O’Donnell’s final on-air sign-off

Norah O’Donnell said goodbye to her spot as the main CBS Evening News anchor on Thursday night.

“This has been the honor of a lifetime to anchor this legacy broadcast,” O’Donnell said.

“The CBS Evening News – for good reason – is the longest-running evening newscast in America. And it is powered by the finest journalists in the world.

“The correspondents, producers, researchers and crews who work tirelessly to bring you the news every night.

“That won’t change because journalism matters.

“I know that because I’ve heard that from so many of you, our viewers.

“So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for trusting us and welcoming hard news with heart into your homes.

“I will miss you too, but I will see you on CBS News programs including Mornings, 60 Minutes, Sunday Morning, and in primetime.

“So for the final time, that’s tonight’s CBS Evening News,” she said as she was flanked by her colleagues.

“I owe it all to everyone I work with. Seriously. Love you. Good night.”

O’Donnell and Brennan interrupted the debate on October 1 between JD Vance and Tim Walz to conduct a fact check.

It sparked outrage as CBS had previously said there would be no mid-debate corrections.

Trump blasted the moderators as “extremely biased” and “liars” in a post on Truth Social at the time.

He also called out O’Donnell for stepping down as an anchor, which she announced in July.

“I thought Norah was fired from CBS for Low Ratings. Why is she still on?” Trump wrote at the time.

He later added, “Norah just made a statement about the Election, not a question. She’s having a bad night!”

    O’DONNELL’S FUTURE

O’Donnell announced in July 2024 that she would leave her role as anchor and managing editor after the 2024 presidential election as CBS faced an overhaul.

Instead of anchoring every night from Washington DC, O’Donnell will now work on long-form stories and appear on CBS’s primetime specials Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes.

The correspondent was named host and managing editor of CBS Evening News in 2019 after seven years as co-anchor of CBS This Morning.

Before joining CBS News in 2011, O’Donnell had a 12-year run at NBC News, where she served as the network’s Washington Bureau correspondent and MSNBC’s Chief White House correspondent.

The longtime anchor announced her decision to leave CBS just months before the network’s parent company, Paramount Global, laid off around 2,000 staffers, 15% of its US employees, in its merger with Skydance Media in August.

The planned merger, expected to finish in September 2025, sparked Paramount Global to cut $500 million before the end of 2024.

It came after O’Donnell’s salary was cut by more than half when it dropped from $8 million to $3.8 million in 2022, according to the New York Post .

CBS’ Evening News will now rely on multiple co-anchors to fill O’Donnell’s spot.

The network is moving toward a more digital-centric broadcast to follow along with industry trends.

In terms of ratings, CBS Evening News has been stuck in third place behind ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s NBC Nightly News for years.

    ‘WHAT AN ICON’

While Trump supporters piled on O’Donnell following her exit on Thursday, other CBS viewers showed their support for the veteran broadcaster.

“Really going to miss her,” one X user wrote.

“What an icon she is. Best wishes to her!”

Another added, “This will be the biggest regret for CBS News. Norah is hands down the best of all news media.”

CBS isn’t the only network facing major changes.

The CEO of CNN warned that the network could “no longer exist” if it doesn’t adapt to the changing landscape of legacy media.

Plus, more speculation is swirling about CNN anchor Jim Acosta’s future.

However, Acosta gave a cheeky sign-off on Friday where he vowed he’s “still reporting from Washington.”

Joy Behar returns to The View and explains real reason for week-long absence from talk show

THE View fans were thrilled today when Joy Behar finally returned to the daytime show after “going missing” from the series.

Fans have been left wondering why Joy Behar has been absent from The View for the past week, with some concerned she might be leaving the show.

Last Thursday, host Whoopi Goldberg, 69, addressed her absence, and told viewers: “Joy is not here. We wish her a happy opening night. It’s tonight.”

Whoopi was referring to Joy’s off-Broadway play, My First Ex-Husband, which premiered last week at New York’s Mac-Haydn Theater.

She wrote the production and also performs in it, alongside Tovah Feldshuh, Susie Essman, and Adrienne C. Moore.

Joy hasn’t been on The View since last Monday (February 3), with former co-host Star Jones filling in for her.

But now she has returned to her place on the panel, much to the delight of fans.

However, it’s now been revealed there is more to her absence than just her off-Broadway show.

Speaking about why she has been away from The View, Joy said: “I was sick!”

Although she didn’t disclose what illness she’d had, she hinted she had been unwell all week – and just as her off-Broadway show was kicking off.

Asked how Mr First Ex-Husband was going, she replied: “It’s going really well, people seem to like it!.

The View’s Whoopi Goldberg appears ‘tired’ and ‘uninterested’ during show taping as she faces retirement rumors
    “It’s been a fun ride.”

Joy then revealed she would be doing the play until February 23, before another actress takes over the role.

The popular host has been a staple of The View since she the show started in 1997.

She took a break in 2013, before returning in 2015.

It is currently in its 28th season, and after its recent boost in ratings, it was given an extra show each week.

Since last month The Weekend View now airs on ABC News Live, which is the streaming platform website.

The show is half an hour long and features the show’s Friday panel.

However, Whoopi wont be on the show because she doesn’t work on Fridays.

    On Pause

Deadline broke the news about the future of Price Is Right. CBS paused production on the game show as of Thursday, January 9. At this moment, production is still halted due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

The fires have affected numerous areas, including the Pacific Palisades, Eaton, Malibu, and Altadena. Twenty-four lives were claimed due to the fires in Eaton and Palisades.

Currently, most shows that include live audiences are on pause. However, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned on Monday, January 13. The late-night talk show film tapings at the El Capitan in Hollywood.
