This Is Easily ‘Shifting Gears’ Best Scene, Hands Down

Tim Allen as Matt standing next to and looking at Kat Dennings as Riley in the kitchen in Shifting Gears.

Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for ‘Shifting Gears’ Season 1, Episode 4.Often, in sitcoms, their best scenes will be dramatic, not comedic, in my opinion. This is true of Friends, where it is Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) heartfelt proposal and Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) destructive break-up that are the high points of that series. The same can be said for many more sitcoms, and it is certainly the case when we look at Shifting Gears. This scene came in Episode 4, “Grief,” in which Matt (Tim Allen) broke down while clearing out his dead wife’s closet.

The reason that these scenes tend to be so effective is that it is not what we expect to see. We know we’ll be laughing with these characters, so to cry with them surprises us, and we see their depth. Not only is what they are talking about key, but how they frame it typically shows us how the character reacts to extreme emotions and tells us so much about them. With Matt in this episode, we see how badly affected he is by his wife’s passing, and it marks a monumental shift in how we perceive his more negative traits.

Matt Breaks Down After an Unwanted Therapist Session in ‘Shifting Gears’

'Shifting Gears' image shows Kat Dennings and Tim Allen talking in a kitchen.

The main narrative thrust of Shifting Gears is watching the broken relationship between Matt and his daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), slowly mend over the course of 10 episodes. With Riley’s mother and Matt’s wife gone, there is no one to mediate the two’s differences, meaning that Riley, rather than respect Matt’s wishes to not go to therapy, or compromise somehow, tricks Matt into a joint session before running out of the room, leaving him alone. Later, Matt comes home angry after the session and is determined to clear out his wife’s old clothes, furious that he was asked “what comes to mind” when he thinks about his late wife.

While Riley tries to sympathize with Matt’s feeling that life isn’t fair, Matt makes a valid point that life isn’t fair. For a character who hasn’t shown much empathy in the season up to this point, Matt’s evidence that it isn’t fair when a drug dealer is alive after selling people fentanyl or a drunk driver is alive after killing someone with their car hits us emotionally. We see that this character understands the world far better than we gave him credit for. The pain of knowing that all Matt thinks about is the things he can’t do with his wife anymore explains why he is so closed off to everyone else because he doesn’t have the energy to move past how he feels about his late wife.

Through Matt’s Anger, We See What His Deeper Flaws Are in ‘Shifting Gears’

Tim Allen and Seann William Scott in Shifting Gears Episode 8.

As I previously mentioned, these dramatic scenes can give us a clear insight into a character’s core and how they express themselves. During his monologue about how he is “moving fricking on,” Matt tries to frame his anger as him being stupid for keeping his wife’s old closet as it was, since she is “not here for me” or anybody, especially after getting angry at Georgia (Barrett Margolis) for going in there. However, we soon realize that his anguish is coming from his stoicism, which has bottled up his feelings for too long. He speaks about how, to him, grief is “anger” at all the things he can’t change.

The fact he tries to respond to this anger by switching to another extreme, throwing away everything his wife owned after wanting to preserve it all, shows how it is really Matt’s resistance to change that is fueling this breakdown. Throughout the series, we thought he hated the new generation, and while he may disagree with some things young people do, we see that he hates any form of change and can only deal with it in extreme ways. Therefore, what is so fantastic about the scene is that it reveals Matt’s true need in life and his flaws: he needs to accept change yet is too stubborn to do so.

Matt’s Breakdown Begins a Shift in Our Relationship With Him in ‘Shifting Gears’

Up until this moment in the series, Matt came across as a racist conservative who we had little sympathy for. We were completely on Riley’s side when it came to the arguments they had, and it made their dynamic less enjoyable to watch as it was so one-sided. However, we finally get a moment of sympathy with the character to understand that his ignorant comments are his fear of losing control of what he understands. He is blunt, but his focus on fentanyl and drunk drivers killing totally innocent parties shows his strong grip on right and wrong, which means that the loss of his wife, whom he describes as “perfect,” truly makes no sense in his worldview.

This shift also affects his relationship with Riley and his grandkids, Georgia and Carter (Maxwell Simkins), where he struggles to connect to the new generation. After this scene, while he is still rough around the edges, he is far kinder. At the end of Episode 4, he gifts Georgia his wife’s coat, which he previously got angry at her for wearing, showing his ability to look forward rather than behind. With Carter, he begins to mock his social awkwardness less and be more encouraging, to the point he does marijuana gummies in front of him to show how it isn’t a big deal.

I enjoyed Shifting Gears, but even I must admit the first few episodes weren’t the easiest to watch. However, this scene in Episode 4 is what completely changed that. Afterward, it was far easier to connect with all the characters because we saw Matt do so. He went from this grumpy, rude old man, to someone who is trying to get by every day in mental pain after losing the woman he lost. These dramatic scenes are so key in sitcoms to give variety to the characters, and Tim Allen nailed this one.

Shifting Gears is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.

[BIG CHANGE] An plot point in Reba McEntire’s sitcom Happy’s Place has been REPLACED

Reba McEntire announced the premiere date of the first episode of the sitcom Happy’s Place has been confirmed, but an interesting plot point in it has been replaced by…

Happy’s Place finds McEntire playing Bobbie, a woman who inherits a restaurant from her father.

Soon she discovers a half-sister (Escobedo) she never knew she had.

The two become unlikely business partners; in real life, McEntire is 69 and Escobedo is 25, so it’s safe to expect some generation gap humor.

Linn and Peterman’s roles (see below) position each to share the screen with the show’s star often. That could give the show a head start, given their on and off-screen chemistry.

Since the end of Reba, Peterman and McEntire have toured together and filmed many comedic social media clips together. Their timing is still very sharp.

Linn (formerly of CSI: Miami) appeared alongside McEntire in a made-for-TV movie called The Hammer and on ABC’s Big Sky.

One hopes that if the two are lovers in Happy’s Place, they reach a different conclusion than they did on Big Sky, where McEntire’s Sunny kills husband Buck (Linn).

The cast and characters on Happy’s Place represent a diverse set of backgrounds. Here’s what’s known, courtesy of several media outlets, including TVLine.

Reba McEntire as Bobbie: The star of Happy’s Place is “less than thrilled” to be inheriting her father’s business.

Reba McEntire's new comedy series 'Happy's Place' debuts: What to know

Belissa Escobedo as Isabella: Bobbie’s twenty-something half-sister is thrilled to be working at the tavern. The psychology student is full of energy, smart and creative.

Melissa Peterman as Gabby: Gabby is a bartender at the restaurant. She’s described as needy and dramatic and secretly wishing she was Bobbie’s sister.

Rex Linn as Emmett: A cook at Happy’s Place.

Tokala Black Elk as Takoda: A waiter at the tavern.

Pablo Castelblanco as Steve: An accountant.

Happy’s Place was just a pilot until NBC ordered the series for the 2024-2025 broadcast season. No premiere date has been announced yet. Typically, new shows begin in the fall.

  • A MAJOR CHANGE on late-night TV as Jimmy Fallon Is LEAVING ‘The Tonight Show’

A MAJOR CHANGE on late-night TV as Jimmy Fallon Is LEAVING ‘The Tonight Show’

Jimmy Fallon Reveals If He Is Leaving ‘The Tonight Show’

    Jimmy Fallon | YouTube

With the news that Jimmy Kimmel might be leaving his late-night talk show, there is now news about Jimmy Fallon. Both hosts have expiring contracts, and it seemed like there could be a major shakeup on late-night TV. More so, Seth Meyers just signed a new extension through 2028, and Fallon had a decision to make.

Here is what you need to know about Fallon’s future on late-night television.

Jimmy Fallon Reveals Future With The Tonight Show

Jimmy Fallon has been on The Tonight Show as its host since 2014, and with this being his 10-year anniversary as the host, Fallon’s contract was coming to an end. With the Jimmy Kimmel rumors that he would be leaving his talk show at the end of his contract, Fallon’s name was next on the lips of talk show fans.

However, unlike Kimmel, Fallon has already decided to stick it out. He just signed a new extension to remain with NBCUniversal and host The Tonight Show through at least 2028. NBCUniversal Media Group chairman Mark Lazarus released a statement, saying it was a privilege to watch Fallon as the host, and they want to “see what innovations he and the incredible staff will deliver in the years to come.” (via yubi TVLine).

As expected, Fallon responded humorously. He released a statement that was almost word-for-word, the same as Lazarus’, but written from a first-person perspective on his career and the future. He finished with, “No, I’m not changing my quote. Tell Mark to change his.”

Fallon replaced Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, making him its sixth host. Steve Allen debuted the show and worked as its host from 1954 to 1957. Jack Parr then served as its host from 1957 to 1962. Johnny Carson made it the most-watched late-night talk show in history from 1962 to 1992.

Leno followed Carson from 1992 to 2009. Conan O’Brien then came on from 2009 to 2010, but major controversy occurred, and Leno returned from 2010 to 2014. Before The Tonight Show, Fallon made his name on Saturday Night Live.

Other Talk Show Hosts Futures In Question

The biggest name to be possibly departing late-night television is Jimmy Kimmel. His son was born with heart disease, and he has had to have multiple open-heart surgeries and is only eight. Understandably, Kimmel might leave the show at the end of his contract to spend more time with his son.

As aforementioned, Seth Meyers signed a new extension to stay with NBC on Late Night With Seth Meyers through 2028 (although his show is dropping its house band).

However, Jimmy Kimmel’s deal ends in 2025. Stephen Colbert on CBS is signed through 2026, as is Bill Maher and John Oliver on HBO. Taylor Tomlinson on CBS just had her show, Afer Midnight, renewed for the 2024-25 TV season.

Are you happy to know that Jimmy Fallon is sticking around for a few more years? More so, what do you think of his hosting duties? Let us know in the comments below.

[SO SAD] CBS has CANCELED late night SHOW. The announcement saw the network’s late night lineup immediately halved

Mystery as CBS cancels only female-fronted late night show as host shares strange excuse

CBS has canceled late night show After Midnight after barely a year.

Host Taylor Tomlinson said in a statement she was leaving the show to return to her ‘first passion’ of stand-up comedy.

The announcement saw the network’s late night lineup immediately halved – leaving behind just The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Tomlinson, viewed by many as a rising star, mentioned Colbert in her statement. He had been one of After Midnight’s executive producers.

He touched on Tomlinson’s exit toward the end of his show Wednesday night, framing the host as ‘incredibly funny.’

‘Unfortunately, After Midnight is going to end in June,’ he added, sparking some ‘awws’ from the studio audience.

Colbert went on to emphasize how the development had been Tomlinson’s decision – one he supported.

His words came at a point he usually reserved to promote After Midnight, which, in a crowded field of shows manned by men, yubi had been the only female-fronted program of its kind.

‘Hosting “After Midnight” has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime, and I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible journey,’ Tomlinson, 31, said.

‘Though it was an extremely tough decision, I knew I had to return to my first passion and return to stand-up touring full-time.

‘I appreciate CBS, Stephen Colbert, the producers and the entire “After Midnight” staff and crew for all the love, support and unforgettable memories.’

While no other reasons were provided, Colbert offered his input before going on the air.

‘I want to thank CBS for their constant support and invaluable partnership on “After Midnight,” and the whole staff for their amazing dedication,’ the longtime late night host said.

‘While we were excited and grateful for our third season to start in the fall, we respect Taylor’s decision.’

That decision, meanwhile, remains mired in mystery, leaving the shows’ season finale to serve as a conclusion for the entire series.

It premiered in January of 2024, after the end of The Late Late Show With James Corden.

Corden’s show had been a surprise hit for the recently ratings-challenged network, and he too left of his own accord.

Craig Ferguson, several years before, did the same – citing the heavy workload that comes from the job.

His forebear, the legendary Tom Snyder, did so as well, after moving to CBS along with longtime friend David Letterman to start the show – then known as The Late Late Show.

It was the spiritual successor of Snyder’s old program on NBC, the more cerebral Tomorrow Show, which kicked the late, late night era off in 1973.

More than half a century later, the format as a whole is struggling.

Late last year, the program once manned by the late Johnny Carson, Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, cut its schedule to just four days a week.

Advents such as streaming have only made things worse, as well as additional ratings declines seen since the election.

As it stands, Greg Gutfeld‘s late night-styled Fox alternative is attracting the largest average nightly audience of the pack – something unthinkable a decade ago.

The pronounced shift in audience shows who’s watching network TV and how millions of Americans are fed-up with the relatively recent phenomenon of politicized content.

Such content was seen in spades during Trump’s first term; a trend that’s since resumed with the politician’s second presidency.

CBS Evenings’ O’Donnell suddenly stepping away from her highly prized job, meanwhile, left the long-popular program to retool and introduce a new two-anchor format.

A former CBS exec told the Mail last month the move was immediately seen ‘as a disaster’ internally, after it was met with a stark drop in ratings.

The deviation from tradition – since rectified with a less magazine style format – was also accompanied by a further high-profile exit with the sudden ‘resignation’ of CBS President of Editorial and Newsgathering Adrienne Roark, just seven months after she had accepted the position.

A source told DailyMail.com that she was actually fired.

KELLY Clarkson left fans curious about which The Voice judge was “mean” to her during the early days of her career.

The Since U Been Gone singer and TV host revealed on Kylie Kelce’s podcast last week that certain stars were rude and dismissive at the beginning of her career, becoming critical of her after she found fame on American Idol season one back in 2002.

She said on Not Gonna Lie, “People were really mean. People that were really mean have been coaches.

“They hated talent shows — and they ended up being on The Voice.”

“People were really cruel at first. They didn’t like it,” she added.

“It took the industry kind of by storm, the talent shows. It was a very unlikable thing in the industry concerning the populous. Now there’s so many.”

While Kelly did not say the name of anyone specifically, or even state if she was referring to a male or female star, new allegations from journalist Rob Shuter claims it was Christina Aguilera.

The gossip writer shared the claims on his Substack, claiming insiders sources told him, “It was Christina. She was openly dismissive of Kelly from day one — she didn’t think a reality show winner belonged in the big leagues.”

The U.S. Sun has contacted representatives for Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera for comment.

    KELLY AND CHRISTINA’S HISTORY

Kelly and Christina have a long history together in the industry, with Christina being behind Kelly’s smash-hit 2003 single, Miss Independent.

The song was originally meant to appear on Christina’s album Stripped, but it was later handed over to Kelly, who tweaked it for her own release.

It’s a single Kelly credits for changing the trajectory of her career, telling Today, “Everybody wanted me to do ballads straight off of [American] Idol. I was like, ‘No, I really like this song. I want to set up some kind of precedent.’

Christina Aguilera posts sizzling video showing off side boob as she dances in silver dress
“It was very important to me as an artist, and I got to write on it as well, which was important to me.”

However, the song came with complications – as the switch from Christina to Kelly was reportedly done so without either of their knowledge.

“My label at the time didn’t tell me but I guess the producers and writers started it with her but then it wasn’t finished so I ended up writing the rest and finishing it without even knowing she was on it or ever a part of it,” Clarkson told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live.

“I swear to God, I got my album booklet and I was like, ‘Oh my God, my first album,’ and then I was like, ‘Why is Christina Aguilera on it? That’s weird?’

“And I love her, so I’m like, ‘Cool… but what?’ It was a weird thing.”

    SUPPORTIVE STARS

Since then, Christina and Kelly have also appeared on The Voice – although notably not at the same time.

Christina appeared across seasons one to three, and then five, eight and 10, before leaving to focus on her music.

Kelly didn’t join the show until season 14, and remained a regular face until season 22, when she took a year off. She was back for season 23.

The pair have also often praised each other publicly, with Christina making frequent appearances on The Kelly Clarkson Show, and joining Kelly in performing on the show.

Kelly also frequently performed Christina’s track Beautiful on stage during her early career, and during her signature ‘Kellyoke’ performances on the show, she has performed songs including Fighter, Beautiful and Say Something.

Gwen Stefani hints at marriage trouble with Blake Shelton in cryptic lyrics of new song Still Gonna Love You

Last year, Gwen and her husband,B lake Shelton, were forced to address rumors that their relationship was in trouble and this new single is only likely to have sparked whispers once more.

The lyrics to the track, which is a collaboration with Finneas, are about someone who is being ‘pushed away’ by their partner.

Gwen, 55, sings: “You can push me away/ Go ahead and make your mistakes.

“I won’t judge you/ Nothin’ that you can say if you want me to hate you

    “I’m still gonna love you.”

The lyrics also include: “And I know you’re not trying/ To break my heart, but it still hurts the same.”

Still Gonna Love You features on Gwen’s Bouquet Deluxe album, which she released today (March 14).

The album features acoustic versions of every song on her Bouquet album, which dropped in November last year.

To add to the confusion, the cryptic song release comes after 48-year-old Blake also raised eyebrows with a bizarre announcement about “recreational use”.

Gwen married country star Blake in a romantic ceremony held on his ranch in Oklahoma in July 2021.

Gwen Stefani ‘planning to quit’ The Voice after 10 years to ‘spend more time’ with husband Blake Shelton and her kids
The couple had met in 2014 on the set of The Voice, where they were both starring as judges, and they began dating the following year.

On their wedding day, Gwen dazzled in a gown made by designer Vera Wang and she wore a veil that paid tribute to her new husband and her children.

It had the names ‘Blake, Gwen, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo’ hand embroided on it.

But less than three years down the line, the couple faced rumors that their marriage was on the rocks.

It came as fans noticed Gwen and Blake were spending a significant amount of time apart from each other.

They even celebrated New Years in different time zones, with Gwen marking it in Las Vegas while Blake performed at the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Oklahoma.

    CLAPPING BACK

In January 2024, the couple hit back at claims their relationship was in trouble by putting on a united front.

Gwen held Blake’s hand in an Instagram Stories clip before she was inducted into Orange County ‘s Hall of Fame.

Weeks later, she posted a picture of a vase of purple flowers which were positioned alongside a note that read: “To Pretty Girl, Love Blake.”

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Timeline

Blake, 47, and Gwen, 52, began dating in 2015 after meeting on the set of the NBC reality show The Voice.

Both were fresh out of lengthy failed marriages.

After a five-year relationship, the celebrity couple got engaged in 2020.

The Hollaback Girl singer announced their engagement on social media as she flashed her blinged-out hand while sharing a kiss with her hubby.

Blake also shared the same picture on his Instagram, writing, “Hey Gwen, thanks for saving my 2020… And the rest of my life.. I love you. I heard a YES!”

Less than a year later, on July 3, 2021, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at Blake’s Oklahoma ranch.

The two seem to have now found their forever loves, after leaving a trail of drama from past relationships behind them.

In December, The U.S. Sun even told how Gwen is planning to ‘quit’ The Voice after 10 years to spend more time with Blake and her kids.

Blake bowed out of the NBC show last year and insiders claim Gwen is showing signs of following in his footsteps.

According to a source close to Team Gwen, the pop star had “crying a lot” during the last season of The Voice.

“It was nonstop emotions, crying throughout this entire journey but you can tell it’s mostly rooted in joy and deep pride for the work she’s done,” the source said.

The insider added added that due to her behavior, “all signs are pointing” to her calling it quits after a 10-year run.

“She never outright said she was done with the show but it seems like she’s quitting, yeah. She’s done I think,” they added.

“Gwen wants to spend more time with her family now that Blake is also off the show.

“She really found a second home in Oklahoma and seeing Blake walk away from the show and prioritize his own music and their family life, I think made her realize what her next chapter can look like.”

The Voice ratings drop by over 1m viewers and show loses top spot to rival American Idol

RATINGS for The Voice have dropped by over 1 million viewers as rival singing competition show American Idol has taken over the top spot.

The Voice and American Idol now air on Monday nights, as the schedule conflict has affected viewership for the once-top rated NBC show.

The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal The Voice’s major drop in ratings for Monday, April 7.

For The Voice’s Knockouts night, 3,321,000 viewers watched the episode, as over one million viewers tuned out from the week prior with 4,567,000.

As for ABC’s American Idol, 4,145,000 viewers tuned in for the final round of Hollywood auditions with special guest Jelly Roll for Monday, April 7.

While this was a drop for American Idol compared to the Sunday, April 6 episode with 5,123,000 viewers, the ABC show still beat out The Voice, unlike last week.

    RATINGS WAR

American Idol struggled on their first Monday night on March 31.

On the Sunday, March 30 show, 4,661,000 viewers checked out the final night of auditions for American Idol.

But on Monday, March 31, ratings for the ABC show dropped down to 3,781,000 despite Hollywood Week, Part 1.

The Voice remained strong on March 31 despite Idol airing on the same night, as 4,567,000 viewers watched.

    HEARING THEIR VOICE

The Voice once brought in more viewers than American Idol this season.

For the March 23 episode of American Idol, 4,661,000 viewers watched.

For The Voice’s March 24 show, 4,929,000 viewers tuned in.

American Idol brought in 4,510,000 viewers for Sunday, March 16’s episode.

The Voice beat the ABC series with 5,237,000 viewers for Monday, March 17.

The Sunday, March 9 premiere of American Idol had 4,494,000 viewers, while the Monday, March 10 episode of The Voice had 5,470,000.

    SAVING THE SHOW

Singer Jelly Roll appeared on the show this week as the series’ first artist in residence to give advice and help contestants.

The appearance brought viewers in, as one posted, “Watching this only because you’re on it!”

A second said, “Gave me chills when you came on stage. You are only reason I am going to anxiously follow this season.”

A third said, “Imma watch it just for @jellyroll615.”

    CAST SHAKEUPS

Adam Levine, John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini and Michael Buble are coaching this season of The Voice.

Maroon 5 singer Adam, 46, returned to the show after a six-year break.

The fan-favorite coached the first 16 seasons from 2011 to 2019 and took home the prize three times during his time on the singing competition series.

As for American Idol, Carrie Underwood joined for Season 22 to judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

She replaced former judge Katy Perry.

Carrie, 42, won Season 4 of American Idol in 2005 and has been known for her emotional response to auditions.

    The Voice Season 27 Coaches

The Voice has gone through many coaches in its various seasons. Some stay on for a while, while others only stay for one season. Here is who will be coaching Season 27 in 2025.

    Adam Levine – Season 1 to 16, 27

    John Legend – 16 to 22, 24 to 25, 27

    Kelsea Ballerini – 15, Comeback Stage, 20, 27

    Michael Buble – 26 and 27

    IDOL BACKLASH

While ratings are now soaring for American Idol, the series has received backlash this season regarding casting.

During part one of Hollywood Week, Baylee Littrell, the son of Backstreet Boys singer Brian Littrell, made it through.

American Idol contestants competing against Baylee found the casting to be unfair.

“I do feel like it’s unfair but that’s the way the industry is. The way the world is, really,” a contestant on this season of American Idol previously told The U.S. Sun.

The cast member continued, “Everyone gets along great with [Baylee] so it’s nothing against him personally. He’s talented.

“But isn’t the whole point of this show to give people who have no prior connections or chance of making it a shot?”

This week, Baylee performed a duet with contestant Keilene, as the performers sang a cover of Shallow.

Lionel said the cover was “too powerful,” and that Baylee was “timid” compared to Keilene.

Despite the criticism for Baylee, the judges sent Keilene home over him, as Carrie said, “Moving forward, I need you to step it up!”

  • [SO SAD] Katy Perry will ‘NEVER’ RETURN to American Idol & ‘WON’T WATCH’ Carrie Underwood’s season

[SO SAD] Katy Perry will ‘NEVER’ RETURN to American Idol & ‘WON’T WATCH’ Carrie Underwood’s season

Katy Perry will ‘never’ return to American Idol after ‘suffocating’ experience & ‘won’t watch’ Carrie Underwood’s season

KATY Perry has vowed to never return to American Idol after allegedly finding the experience suffocating, The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal.

The pop star was replaced by country singer Carrie Underwood after leaving the show last year – but reportedly hasn’t watched her successor as the new season currently airs.

Katy, 40, has been on the go, releasing a new album, 143, and prepping for the Lifetimes tour ever since announcing her exit from American Idol in 2024.

Due to the demanding months-long filming schedule of Idol, Katy was unable to pursue her own music projects to their full capacity and, due to that, is “not interested” in coming back to Idol, a source claimed.

The insider told The U.S. Sun: “Katy doesn’t even watch show so she hasn’t seen Carrie.

“But she feels more like herself now than she has in years being a pop star. She is a pop star to the core and her team all felt like the show was holding her back, she felt that too.

“It was suffocating in a way due to being under the Disney contract and needing to film so many weeks of the year and having to answer to people she would not normally have to answer to.”

The source said that Katy hasn’t tuned into the singing competition since she departed, so she has “no opinion” on how Carrie, 42, is doing in her judge’s seat.

“Katy wishes the show and everyone there well, she still views it as a positive overall.

“She just graduated from that chapter and has no interest in going back,” they added.

On February 12, 2024, Katy announced she was leaving American Idol after seven seasons.

After Idol season 22, the Dark Horse singer said she wanted to exit the show to focus on new music.

American Idol ratings plummet by 1m viewers as Hollywood Week airs on same night as successful rival The Voice
While discussing the shocking decision on Jimmy Kimmel Live last year, Katy explained: “So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol.

“I love [American] Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I need to feel that pulse of my own beat.

“I love the show so much but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

In the time since leaving Idol, Katy released her new album and is about to embark on the Lifetimes World Tour.

The tour will begin on April 23, 2025, in Mexico City and is set to conclude on December 7, 2025, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – consisting of eighty-four shows.

It marks her first tour since joining Idol – as she last hit the road for her Witness album back in 2017.

    LIVIN’ A TEENAGE DREAM

Since Katy’s departure, Idol is seemingly saving a fortune by slashing the amount it’s paying out to her replacement.

After joining the panel in 2018, it was reported that the Teenage Dream songstress’ Idol salary was upwards of $25 million per season – allegedly more than double what her co-judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were pocketing.

Who are the past American Idol winners?

The previous American Idol winners include:

    Kelly Clarkson (2002)

    Ruben Studdard (2003)

    Fantasia Barrino (2004)

    Carrie Underwood (2005)

    Taylor Hicks (2006)

    Jordin Sparks (2007)

    David Cook (2008)

    Kris Allen (2009)

    Lee DeWyze (2010)

    Scotty McCreery (2011)

    Phillip Phillips (2012)

    Candice Glover (2013)

    Caleb Johnson (2014)

    Nick Fradiani (2015)

    Trent Harmon (2016)

    Maddie Poppe (2018)

    Laine Hardy (2019)

    Just Sam (2020)

    Chayce Beckham (2021)

    Noah Thompson (2022)

    Iam Tongi (2023)

With Carrie part of the show now, a source claimed she will be making closer to what Luke, 48, and Lionel, 75, are making – which is far less than Katy’s payday.

“For her first year, Carrie is making substantially less than Katy,” a source told The U.S. Sun.

“Carrie’s salary is in the $10-12 million range, so less than half of what Katy was getting.

“Depending on Carrie’s performance and how she’s responded to by the viewers, there is room to boost that number up if she were to return next year.”

The insider claimed the Grammy winner signed a one-year contract so she is “not obligated” to return.

However, they added that if “everything continues to go how it’s been,” the team will “want Carrie back, no question.”
